“Amazing Weekend Getaway”
Reviewed 29 June 2014

My wife and I were lucky enough to spend a weekend away at Matuka Lodge.
From the moment we arrived we were blown away by Jo's hospitality and the lodge itself.

Jo made us feel extremely welcome and went out of her way to do anything she could to make our stay relaxing and enjoyable.

We had an relaxing night, sitting by the fire enjoying the scenery, and in the morning Jo cooked us a wonderful breakfast which we enjoyed with views over the pond and a visit from the local white heron.

Would definitely recommend and will be back again!

Dear Andrew and Mel
Thanks for the lovely review it was an absolutely pleasure to have you to stay at Matuka.
The photos you have posted are fantastic and the Kotuku continues to visit us every morning we feel very honored I must say.
The weather has been cool but beautiful mornings and sunny days we missed the snow.
Would love to see you at Matuka again one day .

Very Best Wishes
Jo

Simply stunning! The place was beautiful, the room brilliant and Jo and Peter were the best hosts I've ever encountered in NZ or anywhere overseas and I've stayed in many!! Nothing was too much trouble for them and they could sense without words when to be inclusive and when not. Always welcomed but never pressured! I couldn't recommend they'd highly enough or their beautiful lodge! Perfect! Thank you Jo and Peter, I hope to see you again soon

Dear Shona
We so enjoyed having you to stay at Matuka, thank you for your kind words.
If only you could be here when the Kotuku arrives on the deck he certainly takes up a lot of time quite mesmerizing and meant to be lucky! The weather has been fantastic so far and the autumn colours just amazing.
Our very best regards to you

We had planned to go to the glaciers but due to the flooding we could not get there and found this great alternative! Jo and Peter greeted us at the door and made us feel very welcome, we enjoyed complimentary drinks and delicacies with them overlooking the gorgeous pond, the room was amazing and clean and the view from the private spa just fantastic despite the clouds. Jo gave us a lift and picked us up again from dinner, a roaring fire and complimentary drinks awaited us in the spacious common living room for a night cap. Bed was huge and comfortable and the breakfast delicious. One of the best places we stayed in NZ. We didn't care that Twizel itself didn't have much to offer as the lakes and mountains are just down the road. Highly recommend Matuka Lodge for a romantic stay! Sharnette & John

Dear Sharnette and John
How wonderful it was to have you stay at Matuka. We so enjoyed your company and thank you so much for your lovely comments. We are keeping busy even though we are going into the quieter season but still plenty of bikers going past the gate on the cycle trail .The trees are nearly barren of their leaves but has been a spectacular autumn with very few frosts.
We look forward to hopefully seeing you again one day at Matuka Lodge.
Kindest Regards
Pete and Jo

The lodge was under new management when we stayed and had only recently reopened. Jo was very welcoming and the lodge is just amazing! The views from every room are stunning looking over to the mountains. We sat on the decking in the evening sunshine watching the ducks on the pond as the sunset. The accommodation was superb throughout, immaculately clean even the view from the bathroom was amazing. There is a very interesting library, and a well equipped kitchen. We were going to eat out but we didn't want to leave the lodge for a moment because we enjoyed being there so much. This was the best place we stayed at during a month of travelling around NZ and definitely worth the money. Thanks to Jo for making are stay although short so special. Tony & Sarah

Stayed only for one night.

Pros:

- Lovely hosts, friendly, attentive and keen to provide an impeccable service
- Great breakfast
- Immaculate clean lodge, makes you feel at home
- Free internet

Contras:

Unrelated to the Matuka Lodge itself, but as other mentioned, Twizel is not properly a worth town to visit, or at least I would not recommend any tourist to be stopping by there. Very limited eating options and nothing remarkable worth to be visited. Mount Cook & Lake Tekapo can be visited during the day - I would suggest to stay for the night somewhere else.
Another small remark, following what another user said - the main picture from the website does reflect reality but might be mismatching your expectations.

My review is somewhat different from the others as i booked based upon the picture on their web site which is impressive but upon arrival your hit with a scale of things as the building just doesn't meet with what their web picture puts into your mind . ( Well done to the web designer )
The two rooms are clean and very well done with nice touches but we found Twizel a very odd place !
Twizel is not like any normal town as it seems to be on an industrial type of estate with approx three eating places , there is nowhere to go dressed up for a quality meal .
we loved our time in NZ and can't wait to go back but this was the only real venue we stayed that was a real disappointment .

Room Tip: Don't go to Twizel as there is nothing there and Mt Cook can be done from lots of other places .

My wife and I stayed at Matuka Lodge for two nights; there is only one word that describes the whole experience ''FANTASTIC''. The quality of the rooms and facilities is on par with any London 5 star hotel room but peaceful!! Our hosts Rosaline and Russel were so welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The food was lovely and the local travel advice was spot on..... If we ever get a chance to travel back to New Zealand this is a ''Must Stay Accommodation. A big thank you to you both for a memorable stay.
