“Charming Place and Great Hosts”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

Unique home specifically designed for guests but with all the comforts of home. Room was very large, immaculately clean with luxurious en suite. Hosts Mary and Jim were gracious, warm hosts, going out of their way to be friendly – helping us arrange our trip to Mt. Cook, identifying an excellent nearby restaurant for dinner and offering us wine and interesting evening conversation in the living room. Only wish we lived nearby as we are sure we would become fast friends. Breakfast was exceptional and abundant and we were sent on our way with a bag of home-baked goodies in the morning. No question but that Heartland Lodge should be your destination on your trip to the Mt. Cook area.

We stayed at the two bedroom family unit in April. There was one room with a queen size bed and one room with 4 single beds. This is supposed to be an apartment with a fully functioning kitchen. There were 4 bags of tea, 4 teaspoons of coffee, a double burner but no stove, no condiments, no soap, and more importantly there was no heat in the room with the queen size bed which also doubled as a living room. April is chilly in the south island of NZ. There was a small wood-burning stove in the living room for ambience but not for functionality. When the stove was out 15-20 min after its door was shut the fire was out and the room was really cold. There was an electric space heater in the kids room which did a fine job keeping that room warm. This was the only place we stayed in NZ where we were not offered a small container of milk upon our arrival. No! We should not have to ask for any of the items mentioned above they should have been offered the way they are offered everywhere else. When asked for directions to various attractions times were trimmed down to 40 min when it took at least 1 hr doing the speed limit. This was the only place where my credit card was charged before I went to check out. Quick to charge but slowly refilling the jar of coffee with two teaspoons of coffee. Did I say this was also the only place without heat in every room?

We regret that your stay was less than comfortable and sorry that you did not talk to us when all of these difficulties could have been immediately resolved. April’s weather is more variable and the day was wet and cold. The room configuration is clearly stated and pictured on our website. The kitchen has two cooking elements and is equipped with a microwave, rice cooker, electric jug and adequate cooking utensils. Condiments are provided, shampoo and soap is in the bathroom. All these are standard for self catering accommodation. Guests are shown how to control the stove, dry firewood is prepared and there is someone on hand if there is a problem. Our nearest attraction is Aoraki/Mt Cook, 60km distant and about 40 min driving time. When we are busy, we sometimes charge the credit card prior to departure to save the guests and our time. Our aim continues to provide a pleasant experience for our guests.

We were so pleased to have made a booking to stay at Heartland Lodge for 3 nights. Mary and Jim are wonderful hosts and made us so very welcome. The bedroom was beautiful and the bathroom luxurious, the house superb. Delicious breakfast. Great location to visit and walk the Hooper and Tasman Glaciers. Highly recommended.

This was our second stay at Heartland and if anything it was even more enjoyable than the first. The accommodation is superb and the food is wonderful.Breakfast is freshly cooked and is amongst the best we have had in a NZ Homestay. Mary and Jim made us feel so welcome it really was like staying with friends. The Lodge is ideally located for visiting the Mt Cook area and we just hope that we shall have the opportunity to stay here again for a third time.

We had the most wonderful stay. Heartland is a very apt name because the hosts Jim and Mary are all heart. Aside from our gorgeous rooms and the delightful garden, the hospitality is second to none. Afternoon drinks and nibbles, scrumptious breakfast and even a little bag of home cooked Anzac biscuits to take on our cycle trip ... Jim and Mary go over and above and that leaves a wonderful memory of a place we hope to come back to one day.

This place sets the benchmark. Our hosts Jim and Mary were the most helpful we have found, providing advice and information. Our room was beautiful. The evening aperitifs and hors d'oeuvres were an unexpected delight. The breakfast was first class. We wish we could have stayed longer.

I used to doubt if Twizel is a nice place for overnight stay and it turned out to be the best choice over Mt Cook area. Heartland lodge is definitely the best of best in this peaceful small town. Driving through the woody road at the edge of Twizel, you won't miss a beautiful gate inside of which there is a large front yard full of flowers- that is heartland. Jim and Mary is the loveliest couple we met in New Zealand, making us feeling at home at the first moment of arrival. We were so warmly treated with the welcome notes for our honeymoon and fresh roses in room. All three rooms are gorgeous and super clean. Jim and Mary were so nice upgrading our stay to Aoraki room as a special offer which is so much appreciated by my husband and myself. The room is very large, comfortable and the decorations were stylish with good sense of art. We had a wonderful night in heartland, enjoying the best dinner in town according to Jim’s recommendation, talking with Jim and Mary and the only pity was the cloudy day without a chance to see the milky way. Jim helped us checking the weather of Mt Cook area and encouraged us to go hiking even if time is very limited for Lake Tekapo. We followed his suggestion and found that day so much worthwhile staying at Mt Cook and Lake Pukaki instead of heading directly to Tekapo. Thank you, Jim and Mary. And special thanks for the tasty homemade cookie. – Sicheng & Jane
