“Wonderful hideaway”
Reviewed 22 December 2010

For those wanting to explore the outdoors in Queenstown or Wanaka--but not deal with the crowds of people (particularly in Queenstown), I couldn't recommend Silverpine more highly. Silverpine is located on a hilltop off the main road to Wanaka--so easy to hop down to town if you wish--but otherwise it's just you, the two owners, their two dogs, and the most beautiful hotel views I saw during our stay in New Zealand.

The food is great, and the hosts are wonderful: they leave you to relax alone, but are ready whenever you need them to point you towards a great hike, or fix up some tea and fresh cookies. They could not have been nicer. In fact, when they discovered I had left my hat after check out, they delivered it to our next hotel--about an hour and a half away!

The hotel is situated between two lakes, and there are wonderful walks for every fitness level. Although we had brought out own hiking gear, Mike and Sue had plenty at the house for guests to use.

Loved the hotel, loved the hosts, and we would definitely return if we wound up in New Zealand again.

Wow - what a place!
Situated high above Lake Hawea, and a short drive from Wanaka, this boutique luxury lodge epitomises what is best about lodge-based travel in New Zealand:
- personalised service
- charm and gracious hospitality from Mike and Susan, for whom nothing is too much trouble
- stunning location with breathtaking views
- incredible cuisine - Sue is clearly passionate about cooking
- the silence
- just four rooms of the same high standard
Not too mention friendly dogs, one of which, Roy, loves to take you out on walks in the hills!
We will certainly be back, and unhesitatingly recommend it.

My husband and I stayed at Silverpine last month while on a one-month vacation in New Zealand (escaping the cold Chicago winter). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to anyone. We stayed at some high-end lodges during our holiday, and Silverpine was our clear favorite! There were numerous reasons why - the stunning location (post-card like views of Lake Hawea and the mountains that take your breath away), the warm and sincere hospitality from Mike and Sue, the beautiful rooms (I loved everything about it, including the great smelling lotions and soaps in the bathroom), and of course the cute dogs!

Sue and Mike went above and beyond for us during our stay. They made us tasty lunches to take on our daily hikes, were there with drinks when we returned, gave great recommendations on area attractions, and dined with us several times, allowing us to get to know them. One of my favorite meals was breakfast on a particularly sunny and beautiful morning when we woke up to see that they had set up breakfast for us outside, so that we could enjoy the weather and view. Speaking of the food - it was excellent, as was their wine selections. We stayed three nights, but wish we would have stayed more. This is definitely a place where they get all the details right - making stays very special and enjoyable for guests. We look forward to a future stay!

First I have to say before writing the rest of our review was that the food here was out of this world and Susan deserves every credit for the lovely dinner party they threw for their friends on Christmas Eve. They invited us to join them. We, along with their friends, enjoyed a few glasses of wine.

The rooms were minimalist but clean. The views from the room were magical. However we felt that the bathroom was poorly designed so when you had a shower the water covered most of the bathroom floor and you risked using the toilet in a pool of water.

We were told that traditions at Silverpine meant that Christmas Eve was the day most celebrated. But it was not unreasonable to expect some effort to be made in celebrating Christmas Day. As we were the only ones there we had imagined a quiet but cosy Christmas with the owners. Sadly no effort was made to socialise with us on this special occasion, not even for a meal.

Throughout our time in New Zealand we were constantly surprised by the generosity of the people we stayed with and the value for money we received. Silverpine was gracious enough to allow us to briefly call home to wish loved ones a Merry Christmas and also prepared a light lunch, in addition to what our tariff covered.

However we would make one point about being offered drinks but not being told up front that we would be charged or indeed how much they were. Most places have a drinks list and prices in plain sight. So it was with some surprise on checkout that we received an itemised bill listing the drinks we’d had. We did not, and would not, expect anything for free, and we would have been more than happy to pay for any drinks consumed had we been given the impression at any point that they were not free.

As we drove away we both felt strangely relieved. We can’t quite put our finger on why but somehow we were expecting so much more from Silverpine.

We took a vacation from our vacation in New Zealand to Silverpine in January. We are traveling for a year and our parents came to visit. My in-laws are very discerning and we were a bit stressed as to where to go for an adult trip away from our three kids. Our agent in Auckland recommended this spot. Without doing any further research or even looking at the website we were off.

The location is truly lovely and offers different views of the beautiful south island. Our fabulous rental in Queenstown has a beautiful view as well, so I thought it would be hard to beat. We arrived at the end of the day and were welcomed by Sue and Mike and their three great dogs. We were not disappointed in one aspect of the stay and in fact were pleasantly surprised throughout.

The meals were fabulous and Sue and Mike are great hosts. This is their home and a business so we expected to pay for additional services and drinks . I was delighted to discover I could have both a massage (GREAT one by Gray) and then a facial the next day. We hiked, went on drives and had a private tour of a vineyard during our stay.

Sadly we ended our stay and headed back to reality. No detail was so too little or complicated for our hosts to help us with, including a detailed list of where to go and what to do while in New Zealand.

This is a relaxing, warm and special place and we will recommend it to many and surely visit again!

PS. My father-in law loved it and that in itself, is a great success!!!

Perched high up on a mountain overlooking Lake Hawea. Beautifully hosted, superb cooking and phenomenal value for money. I have recommended this place to probably 20 people who share my opinion.
