Amazing place - iconic Central Otago establishment. Amazing bruschetta, best mains, laid back atmosphere with great fireplace. Best Central Otago wine list - back vintages, magnums and huge list by the glass. Go.

“Top of the list in Wanaka”
Reviewed 6 July 2014 via mobile

Why isn't this restaurant at the top of the list for restaurants in Wanaka?

I read a few reviews on trip advisor and decided to give this quirky place a try and so glad we did. Yes, there are a few reviewers that had negative things to say about this restaurant but we ignored those complainers and decided to give it a try. It was awesome.

The food is very flavorful, built upon a flavor base of great local fresh ingredients, slow cooking, home made broths, condiments and fine cooking methods. The wine list extensive. The waitress a delight who was patient with our many questions about the menu. It is a small restaurant but we never felt rushed or pressured to hurry and finish our food. We ordered the beef ragout and polenta and clams with pasta and pumpkin soup with yogurt.

Most people were locals, repeat diners who knew this was a great place that consistently delivered high quality flavorful food. The decor was crazy but I loved it. A memorable place I would visit again and again. It is just too far away from where I live ( 3 plane rides and 24 hours of travel). So people of Wanaka and people of New Zealand I envy you that this awesome restaurant is in your backyard.

“Creepy!!!”
Reviewed 4 June 2014 via mobile

I am quite amazed as all the positive reviews. I found the restaurant quite creepy including the host. Yes the food is good but overpriced. And even though the menu is on a blackboard, one of the main dishes was not available at 7pm even though it was still listed. The wine selection is limited and extortionately priced. The cheapest wine was $50.

The atmosphere inside the restaurant is shabby and in desperate need of a makeover. As it was the start of winter it was cold inside even though there was a fire burning. The tables were sticky and needed a good scrub - yup! And finally while we were still eating and had not finished ordering the one and only waitress was having her meal at the bar.

Overall not a great experience. I would never go there again.

“Great food, excellent wine list.”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

This rather quirky little restaurant has been in Wanaka for a very long time. It is one of our favourites. Don't expect flash decor - this place is fun and quirky, but the food is very good with lots of healthy, fresh and interesting dishes on the blackboard menu. The owner, Pete is a real character and is passionate about his wines. If you dine here in the middle of winter, I recommend you dress warmly. There is an open fire but this is, after all, an old Art Deco building with single glazed windows.
