“Best eatery in Wanaka”

At first, we were a bit reluctant to try this place as we've never been big fans of Indian food, but given we arrived in Wanaka about 9 in the evening after such a long drive from the West Coast, and didn't have much options, we decided to give it a go.

The owner kindly squeezed us in past 9:30 in the evening, when there were only 2 groups of people in the restaurant, and we were not rushed out until we finished our meal and wine. This for Sydney standards is very rare.

The place itself is very different from the traditonal Indian restaurant, very modern and we were given a good table close to the fireplace.

Wine list is very good, and we were suggested a nice local Pinot Noir which matched very well with the food. We had a yellow fish curry, that was absolutely fantastic. I think this dish converted us from non indian-food eaters to indian-food lovers.

I will definitely go back when visit Wanaka again and highly recommend this place.

We were recommended to go here by our hosts, as it is their favourite place to eat out. We had the most wonderful food here, some of the best Indian food we have ever eaten anywhere. We especially enjoyed the unusual starters, which our hosts decribe as "street food" that you would buy on the streets in India. We found these absolutely delicious and wondered why our local Indian restaurants at home dont copy the Spice Room! The main courses of curry were light, fresh and utterly scrumptious. The peshwari nans too were poems of lightness and again very much nicer than the ones we are used to at home. We had a meal with starters and mains for two, with drinks and our bill came to $70. This was one of the best meals we had in New Zealand and would recommend The Spice Room to anybody who enjoys Indian Food.

“The Spice Room- Immaculate!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 November 2009

Me,my partner and 7 of our other freinds were in Wanaka for 3 days during October and decided to eat at "The Spice room" on the first night after some insistance from our hosts from the hotel. They said" it was the best thing that has happened to Wanaka in a while".
We booked a table for 7pm and all of us were looking forward to nice Indian meal, as 6 of us are form the UK we were missing the quality curry around NZ.
When we arrived we were made welcome by a french waiterss who gave us an option to hang around in the bar lounge or be seated at our table. We chose to have a coctail each in the lounge and then proceed. The cocktails were yummy, few inspired by ethnic flavours and few given a modern twist...anyhow they were very refreshing.
We were then seated at out table which was a very comfortable booth style seating, the music was very ambient and the restaurant is brialliantly steup.
The menu is very authentic and british inclined, we ordered 3 Sizzling platters for Entres and got a taste of Chickrn tikka, tandoori, fish tikka(yummmmy), seekh kebab, samosa and veg pakora. We then ordered some Biryani, Malabari, Jalfrezi, Bhuna Ghost and Tikka masala with various meats and Naan breads.
The curries came out with distinct aromas and we all just dug in..and almost said at the same time that the food is just GREAT...The meat was tender and tasty and was plentyful. The naan breads are the softest I have ever had!!!
All this was just a perfect match with Our Central Otago Pinot Gris that we ordered at the Bartenders choice which was very affordable. We liked this place so much that we got takeaways for 1 night we were staying in Queenstown. The Spice Room not to be missed if you are in Wanaka.

“The most variety in Wanaka”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 October 2009

Wanaka's fourth, and newest, Indian restaurant. It is also the best in my opinion. More versatile menu than the others. Doesn't feel like you are sitting in a take away or someone's living room. Service can be a little slow, but it can be hard to find good help in a town with a transient work force. The food is delicious and they even do a happy hour! It is always my recommendation to visitors. I only suggest they dim the lights a bit. It is quite bright inside which can be a bit harsh. You won't be disappointed!

“Wonderful dining at the Spice Room”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 September 2009

This is Wanaka's newest Indian Restaurant. The food and the service were superb! They have an extensive menu to cater for all tastes. We had a banquet for two and there was so much food left over we had to ask for containers to take it home with us. It is very reasonably priced and the food is beautifully cooked and well presented - we'll be back again for sure.
