Owner description: Backcountry Saddle Expeditions has celebrated a few milestones this year... They are 30 years old... with an outstanding 25 years under the current management of Debs Thompson. Debs is an outdoor girl and apologizes for her lack of skill in an ever developing computer world... "It's very hard to ride horses, manage clients, answer emails and/or phone calls whilst on a horse" She is very much a one "wo"man band. Debs does however value every-bodies interest... and looks forward to people booking. The best way to book is directly with Debs... this way she can gauge every-bodies abilities, genders, heights and weights... a cell phone number gives her security and credibility of a booking. This means the client will have the best and most appropriate horse for their booking. Debs is into personal!!!

“Best way to see the country”

Really glad that we chose to go horse riding with Back Country Saddles -- the horses are specially raised for the purpose, and well-suited to beginners like myself and my partner. We were allowed to go up to a trot, which was exciting, as on other horse riding tours, I've only been allowed to walk. Always felt completely safe, however -- our group included small kids as well as adults, and everyone had their needs catered for.

The views we got on this ride were amazing -- nothing can match the extra height you get on the back of the horse, and the sense of connection you get with the landscape when you can feel the wind on your face as you ride!

“Fantastic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 April 2014 via mobile

We had the most wonderful riding experience. Deb has a great set up, so well organized, clean, efficient and friendly. Our ride was taken out by Nikki who was full of energy, enthusiastic and made a huge effort to make us all comfortable. Horses are gentle, kids loved being there.
Thanks again!

“Great rides”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 April 2014 via mobile

This is one of the best horseriding experiences I've done in NZ. Debs is a fantastic host, making sure each of us got a well matched horse to the size and experience of the rider. She's friendly, informative, personable and obviously cares about her horses. The trek was about 2hrs and was great value. Recommended for beginners as well as experienced riders.

“A great horse riding experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2014

Had a wonderful ride experience here. Debs is a very relaxed and friendly person who makes you feel welcome and at ease. I have some riding experience but never had I ridden cow girl style in a western saddle, so that took a little bit of time to get use to but Deb was good at explaining what to do.
I was also very lucky that there were only 3 of us (plus Debs) riding, all with some experience of riding, so we walked, trotted and cantered which was great. The horses were well behaved with such wonderful temperaments. The horses were clearly loved and well cared for by Debs.

We rode for two hours covering the wonderful countryside around Cardrona, it was a stunning day just perfect for riding. Added to this Deb's was able to point out interesting facts along the way.

Helmets are provided.

Can highly recommend these riding stables

“Thanks for the fab memory”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 April 2014

I'm feeling nostalgic!
Just scanned some photos of our New Zealand holiday from 2002, among them were a couple of our Cadrona riding experience at Backcountry Saddle.
The ride was very memorable mainly because my daughter who was only 7yrs old & had been having lessons for months at home in the UK got her first canter and also rode lead free! It was a big moment for her. I had absolute trust in the horses, they were very well behaved & lovely natured. The lady that took us out was very experienced and gave us a bit of freedom that we never had anywhere else! It was a fast paced hack, trotting most of the way.. we covered a lot of ground from what I remember! And well, that scenery is breath taking like bliss on earth.
