“Good place to stay in Wanaka”
Reviewed 3 October 2013

We spent a week here when staying in Wanaka and it was quite nice. My partner and I had a studio apartment which was very spacious and included kitchenette facilities and a king size bed. The bathroom was also quite nice and the rooms were very quiet both during the day and at night. The on-site restaurant facilities were average to good although I'm under the impression that they are undergoing some renovations.

The downsides would be the lack of wifi - to connect was outrageously expensive and could only be used by one device at a time. I understand that the Wifi in the area isn't the best but why I can access free wifi in Bali but not New Zealand is beyond my comprehension. There was also a need for more parking as if you came back later at night it was almost impossible to find a park.

Our room didn't have a view but some of the 2 bedroom apartments did and those views were quite impressive. There was a pool for kids and a gym for those that way inclined. All the staff at reception were very friendly and willing to help with any queries that we had. Breakfast was decent but IMO slightly overpriced.

Room Tip: The studio apartments were spacious and quiet and the large windows allowed a fair amount of light i...

Nothing to fault about the room - it is spacious and definitely very clean. This being more a hotel and less a motel, the kitchen facilities in the room is limited. Practical place to stay, easy parking. Some rooms are a bit tucked away with no views - such rooms are still worthwhile for a one night stay or so.

I traveled as part of a group of 8 (mostly family) and found the Wyndham Vacation Resorts to be a perfect place for us. We had a 3 bedroom apartment that was very spacious and clean. I was very impressed by our check in process. When I went to the front desk and said "hello" with my American accent the front desk clerk addressed me by name and said she had been waiting for the North Americans to arrive. I thought this was a very special to be called out and welcomed. She provided us with several keys, since there were 8 people, and a map of the facility. She explained all the amenities to us and secured an escort to our apartment. There was a good sized kitchen which worked well with us since we looked to cook breakfast, prepare lunches and have the occasional dinner in our unit. The complex also has several BBQ grills that helped in our preparing local lamb and beef.

The unit we stayed in was very clean and well organized. We were able to get additional supplies (toilet paper, paper towels and dishwasher detergent) when we needed it. The pool area offered an after activity relaxation.

I like the location since it was an easy walk into town or down the street to the winery. It also offered a great proximity to the ski areas as well as some fantastic hiking. I really enjoyed Wanaka as a relaxing small town even though I learned the grocery stores charge the most for food of any town in all of New Zealand. I would stay here again without hesitation but might go to Cromwell to stock the refrigerator.

We stayed one night here. It was clean and comfortable, but we had just come from Scenic Suites in Queenstown which had given us far superior apartment-style accommodation for the same price (via a Grabone deal). The room we stayed in seemed confused as to whether it was set up for cooking/food preparation. There was a microwave/oven, lots of cooking implements and dinnerware, but there was no kitchen sink or hotplate. Dishes, including dinnerplates, had to be washed in the bathroom handbasin which didn't seem very practical or hygenic. Our balcony just faced straight into another unit, rather than have any sort of view. The staff were friendly and helpful. All in all, it wasn't bad, but a bit overpriced for what it offered.

Room Tip: If you want to cook, check that your room has a sink and hotplate. If you want a view, make sure yo...

Short drive from town. Very clean and tidy property. We had a one bedroom apartment (king bed and pull out sofa in living room) with full kitchen. Also had a patio - great for drinks and nibbles before jumping in the hot pool! Unfortunately the hot pool could do with a clean.... didn't stop us though! Would definitely stay here again. Didn't try the restaurant. Staff very friendly.

We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment, Husband and I, 42 years. Adult children aged 18 - 22 years. Neat and compact, on the smallish side but okay for 5 of us for 7 nights.
Check In was warm and welcoming. Lovely hostess to greet us.
My youngest son slept on a mattress on the floor because the pull out sofa was so bad. I don't think that these are that expensive to replace. We didn't complain to staff as we had already unpacked etc and it was late at night before we realised.
I didn't like that there was only one bathroom. Most places we have stayed at that are two bedrooms have two bathrooms. This is very much needed, especially in the mornings when everyone needs to pee at the same time. The other issue is no one could pee if someone was in the shower which was a shower over the bath with no door for privacy.
The shower head is placed so low, ok for my daughter and I who are 5ft 3 but the men in our family are 6ft. The toilet seat was cracked for our stay
The kitchen is the worst design ever! Everything is in an inconvenient location so everyone gets in each others way, e.g. when trying to cook and wash dishes.
The stove was two little hot plates which meant that we could not cook two things at once. Very frustrating! Being a large family we need to use large pots and pans.
The apartment itself was cosy thanks to the internal radiator which we found great for drying clothes as well.
We could see snow capped mountains from our balcony , cottages with smokey chimney's which was nice.
There is a hot pool on site next the pool. The hot pool is relaxing even in the winters evening, you don't feel the cold. Its just missing bubbles from a spa. It was a great place to chat to other holiday makers, who also wished for bubbles.
The BBQ area had no lighting, we turned the lights on in the gym so it would cast light. Still not enough.
The gym is tiny but everyone would probably get a work out on the slopes.
Its a 20 minute walk to the centre of town, which is quaint and everyone is so welcoming. You can walk the entire town in an hour, which I did.
There's an abundance of places to eat have coffee or enjoy an alcoholic beverage.
Everywhere has happy hour. We were having beers for $3 AUD much to my adult children's delight.
Every cafe and pub is warm and cosy and everybody likes to chat.
We shopped at New World Supermarket. There are others but this is the cheapest.
All the food is very expensive! You can buy everything from New World including alcohol. We bought Penfolds Merlot for $7AUD (cheap)1 whole uncooked chicken was almost $18.
We loved the hickory smoked streaky bacon, good value and delicious! Note their middle bacon is not like ours. They also don't have as much variety foodwise as AUS.
There is a Mediterranean market and an organic food market which also hosts a deli.
We went the suggested night club La La Land...nobody but us? We had a mulled wine there and left.Petrol is very expensive as well.

The town itself is situated by Lake Wanaka surrounded by snow capped mountains....breath taking!

We drove to Haast, the Blue Pools and all of the waterfalls up to the last one Thunder???
We went skiing at Treble Cone and Cardona. Treble Cone you can hire skis for $22 and ski all day on the magic carpet which is actually quite steep but great for beginners. Then you can pay $15 and take a ski lift to the top of the mountain to enjoy the view. My daughter and I did this whilst the boys took on the black runs. The view from TC is better than Cardona. Pack lunch and take it with you. You will need a hire car in Wanaka, make sure you also get snow chains and take out windscreen insurance. We were not informed about the snow grit and a rock chipped our windscreen. Many other visitors also told us the same stories. The rental hire companies should tell everyone about this at the time they hire. Europcar did not inform us but when we bought the car back a front desk girl was telling a new client. Too little too late for us.
We hired snow boards and ski gear from The Green Toad in Wanaka. Very cheap and staff awesome, helpful, very in the know about the ski fields.

Banks are open on Saturdays till 5pm. Don't exchange your money at the airport. Change at a bank as there are no fees.

Must do's: Puzzling World, visit Queenstown through Crown range rd, Skippers Canyon and Shotover river tour, Ride the Gondola to Bobs Peak, Rob Roy Glacier 4 hour Hike, Cinema Paradiso, Ruby's Cinema, Try Mulled Wine

Overall, hotel was fine, building and surrounds neat and well maintained. Staff bright and bubbly, Bruno at the bar very personable.

We spent 4 days here in August 2013. We stayed in the Presidential suite as there were 5 of us, and we loved the space. Large rooms, lots of nice touches (including a large spa bath on the balcony with a TV, a fireplace, two bedrooms with en suites) and done up very nicely.

My only real complaint is how stingy they were about accessing the wireless network. To spend that much money and be told that we had to share one wifi login between 5 of us seemed rather ridiculous and not appropriate for a decent hotel in 2013 - if usage was a concern they could have throttled the bandwidth or set a limit for the 4 days.

Just a minor note as well that the stereo was great but the connector only allowed for pre-iPhone 5 connectors which seems odd now that the iPhone 5 has been out for almost a year.

Otherwise, highly recommended for the lovely accommodations and easy access to Treble Cone and Cardrona for the skiiers.

Room Tip: If there are a decent number of you, the presidential suite is probably the way to go.
