“Best town in NZ”
Reviewed 30 December 2013

Wanaka rates as my favourite town in South Island. While less famous than Queenstown, it is smaller, more manageable, less pretentious and equally fun. Plenty to do, great places to eat and people are so friendly. Try the mountain biking tracks (and this from a non biker), drive up Matukittuki valley (some easy walks there also to break up the driving), adventure stuff galore etc. Stay for days / weeks / years.

“Cute little town, friendly locals.”
Reviewed 29 December 2013

We were here in August, so the temperatures were cool and wineries mainly closed for the winter season. Downtown was quaint. The lake was small, but beautiful. The entire area was breathtaking, especially from the sky. We spent a morning at nearby Skydive Wanaka, and couldn't have asked for a better experience. The free fall was exhilarating and the glide down such a high with incredible views. The afternoon was spent at nearby Queenstown, one of my new favorite towns. The drive there from Wanaka was windy, and after the skydive, my insides were a little twisted and I lost my breakfast on the drive. :-) The scenery was worth the drive (so I was told)! :-) We did stop at a few wineries in the area. We drank SO much hot cocoa at many different cafés. The food is delicious in New Zealand...so fresh and whole. I love the selection of quiche and many other veggie-based selections. We tried a Thai place in Wanaka....the restaurant was loud, but food good. This is a place I would love to return to for an extended stay in the summer.

“Smalltown feel with a nice beach. Escape from busy Queenstown”
Reviewed 29 December 2013

Wanaka is a lovely small place an a breather from busy Queenstown. Staying here is being able to relas so if you have a choice and don't want to stay in the more busy Queenstown, then definately stay here. Wanaka has a small beach, nice shops and bars and very friendly people.

Very pretty Alipine Village with lovely drives, picnic spots and wineries to explore.... we travelled in Dec and the drive across the Mountain Range was amazing. Pretty wild flowers along the road and river beds made this a very memorable experience.

Roys Peak in Wanaka, Otago, New Zealand is an epic day walk. It is definitely for the fitter traveller with a three hour constant climb to the summit at 1,578metres.What a place to have your lunch.
The views begin almost immediately as you ascend from the road car park and for the most part you can't help but fell like you are walking through a series of postcards.
Basically you are following a farm track so there really isn't any tricky or precipitous sections only glorious panorama. The summit is a little spoiled by its transmitting tower! Having said that there are still 360º views over Treble Cone, Lake Wanaka and Hawea and beyond are otherwise unbroken.
There is an honesty box at the start of the track with a suggested (NZ)$2 donation for track maintenance. Take a windproof jacket and because this alpine country definitely some warm clothes for the top. The track is closed in lambing season 1st Oct -10th November. And unless you want to walk another nine hours across the range to Cardona then, I'm afraid, its down the way you came up!
