“Overnight dog sledding with Underdogs”
Reviewed 13 August 2014

We've just returned from a fabulous dog sledding trip with the Underdogs. Fleur and Kurt offer various short and longer trips, with options to drive your dog team or ride in a basket driven by them. We booked the longer trip to a hut deep in the snow below the Snow Farm cross-country ski trails.
The dogs are a delight, and to watch them in action is a real treat, and they thrive in the cold conditions. Each dog is well-known to Kurt and Fleur, and each is cherished. But they treated us humans well too-- good instruction, safe on the trails, excellent food in the hut, and toasty sleeping bags.

“Nice wee town”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

Wanaka always looks good, but on a crisp winters day it looks great. Lots of work has been done to sort tricky intersections and to pretty up the main drag facing the lake. Plenty of parking and plenty to do. Could be a little cleaner, as rubbish bins were full wherever I looked. Quieter than Queenstown (thank goodness) but with everything you need. A nice day was spent by all in this sweet wee town. I personally think the lake is prettier than Wakatipu.

“A great ski town”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

Wanaka is like Queenstown's little cousin, but it certainly not missing anything by being smaller. Great places to eat, drink and shop. Just a great place to be (and the skiing at Cardrona just 30 minutes away is great).

“A pretty sweet winter town <3”
Reviewed 21 July 2014

The town of Wanaka is home to Lake Wanaka, subject of many aspiring and professional photographers alike.

The pros: it's relatively quiet, well-stocked (there's a boutique cinema, huge supermarket, ski/snowboard rental shops, property agents, and loads of restaurants), and in convenient proximity to ski field giants Treble Cone and Cardrona (45 mins one way to either).

The cons: it's being a tourist's town, things are somewhat more expensive here. That doesn't mean there isn't value though - a $200+ room is going to be worth it, and the $50+ room is going to be similarly worth it. If you have the option, cook at your accommodation as food, though exquisite, can be expensive.

Things to do: (i)n Spend time hunting down That Wanaka Tree (apparently west of McDougall Street) for some mandatory photo opportunities; (ii) Have a picnic (if it isn't too cold); (iii) Enjoy the serenity of a muted sunset over Lake Wanaka; and (iv) Celebrate the day with a glorious winter sunrise over the lake.

Also, drive out to Lake Hawea and Clutha River in Arrowtown just next door. Trust me.
