“Very French and very Good”
Reviewed 25 April 2013

We went here for dinner and were very surprised by the quality and service given we were in the off season and it is out of the way, in a lovely part of New Zealand. The food was very good, the highlight for me being the whitebait Spanish style which was done in a small cast iron pot and served with a nice spicy sauce on the side. The lamb and the duck dished were very well prepared but be prepared for smallish servings in the modern french style, which I quite like but others weren't so impressed. The wine list is excellent and the service from the staff top notch.

“Great food with views of Lake Wanaka & a game of petanque”
Reviewed 25 April 2013

We happened quite unexpectedly upon this little French restaurant and what a delight. The food is made by experts and just melts in your mouth! very friendly staff haute cuisine @ its best. When finished lunch have a game of petanque outside and work off any 'overindulgences" you may have given yourself.A refreshing delight. It is now April and I believe this restaurant closes for a couple of weeks "in between" tourist seasons. If you come to Wanaka be sure and visit this little gem if not just for their amazing coffee but lunch or dinner.Across the road from the golf course with lake views in peaceful surroundings.

“A Great Find”
Reviewed 20 April 2013 via mobile

Enjoyed a lovely lunch. While portions small, food exquisite. Enjoyed the lamb croquettes which were cooked to fall apart with a lovely flavour. Suggest ordering a few portions to share with the table. Tempted to try dessert and was not disappointed. So looking forward to evening menu. Wine tasting bar a lot of fun. Great to try the differences between French and NZ Pinot Noir. Loved that we could take our table card, enter it into the slot and chose a sample, half glass or full glass. Would like to see more Australian reds on offer, quaint to have lovely French champagne in a seventies style cup glass??, and would have expected real tea leaf infusion.
Minor moans for a lovely find. Will definitely be back. Suggest booking for evening.

“Well Worth The Experience”
Reviewed 8 April 2013

We went with friends for an evening meal. The service was impeccable, our waitress was very helpful and had a great knowledge of the wines on offer and the menu. I have food allergies and it was no problem for her to check with the chef. When it came time to take our dessert order she had already spoken to the chef to see what they had available for me. The courses are not large, but if you have the full 3 courses you are well satisfied. The food was beautifully cooked, presented and delicious. Choosing which wine to have was also a lot of fun. Given a type of credit card you are able to have tastings before you decide which wine to have with your meal. A great experience, and we would certainly go again.

“BEST RESTAURANT IN WANAKA”
Reviewed 5 April 2013

Bistro Gentil has the perfect atmosphere for this Holiday Town - summer or winter. But the most appealing aspect is the Food - try something from each of the courses. The Owner - with French origins - has engaged an outstanding Chef who has created a broad Menu of very fine food. And the Wine Selection is very, very good too - all at modest prices. Your experience with the Staff will be excellent too. They are knowledgable, energetic and enthusiastic about the food they serve and their role in creating the character of the Restaurant.
