Description: Located in a beautiful garden setting infused with artwork from world renowned artists, overlooking the lake and mountains of Wanaka, Bistro Gentil serves wonderful modern French cuisine using only the best seasonal produce from Central Otago and it's kitchen garden. Being the first South Island restaurant to house an Enomatic wine-dispenser system, diners can enjoy a range of fine wines by either the glass, half glass or taster. With indoor and outdoor seating, we are open for à la carte dining Tuesday to Saturday evenings. A seven course degustation menu is also available on Friday and Saturday. You are welcome to try our complimentary samples of olive oils and pure fruit balsamic vinegars. Bistro Gentil was recommended in the 2014 Cuisine Good Food Guide.

We loved the food at this restaurant! Highly recommend this place if you're in the Lake Wanaka area. The olive oil is actually from the owner's farm in France! The pan seared salmon was PERFECTLY done! We were all very impressed. All the food, including the freshly baked ciabatta and beet root chutney was absolutely delicious! They also have 24 wines that you can try, self-serve, with the wine card that they give you at the table. Pretty neat, cool and fun! Wish we can go back again when we go to NZ again. Also wish the owner would have the olive oil available for us to buy one day!

it seems so hard for restaurants to gain the 'trifecta' - food, atmosphere, service - however happily Bistro Gentil triumphed on all three.
Special occasion for us which was beautifully acknowledged by the waiter with a round of bubbles on the house. He was friendly, knowledgeable and provided excellent service and advice all evening. We were seated (by request) in the outdoor area on a relatively chilly evening (and I feel the cold!) - however blankets are provided should you wish and they have gorgeously effective outdoor heating (which even heats your seat cushion as you go to get more wine or to the toilet if you're in the right place!)
Ambiance is fabulous and the food was great. Yes the servings are not huge - what a pleasant change it is to have 3 courses and not feel stuffed! Having said that my mother and I split a main between us (300g is not an insignificant portion of steak!) and had plenty.
Gorgeous flavours, difficult to choose.
entrees - beetroot; pork belly; salmon all fab
mains - steak; lamb; chicken all good (chicken pretty delicate flavours)
dessert - choc fondant; rice pudding; crème brulee divine divine divine! Only regret I didn't also get to sample the amazing looking caramel mousse in the cabinet...

Top notch, well done!

Fabulous food, great staff, beautiful location and desserts to die for. A bit pricey but worth every penny. The wine card allows you to have a taste of as many wines as you like, great idea.

This is clearly the number one restaurant in the area. We loved it so much we ate there both nights in Wanaka. Had sensational lamb rump dish, monk fish, chicken souvi, gazpacho, steak tartare, rice pudding. All were terrific and wait staff is pleasant, quick and knowledgeable.bbwonderful wine system as well
