Description: Located in a beautiful garden setting infused with artwork from world renowned artists, overlooking the lake and mountains of Wanaka, Bistro Gentil serves wonderful modern French cuisine using only the best seasonal produce from Central Otago and it's kitchen garden. Being the first South Island restaurant to house an Enomatic wine-dispenser system, diners can enjoy a range of fine wines by either the glass, half glass or taster. As a regular, this is one of the best restaurants in town. The food is always excellent. However, having ordered the beef rib eye I was unable to eat it as it was so tough. On pointing this out to one of the waiters he replied that "They were changing their supplier and given the cut I should expect that I should not be able to cut through some parts of the meat."
Not what I expected! This time they got it wrong. The waiter was not surprised yet offered no redress. 2 stars only.

Dear DJB98, We would always offer to replace a dish that didn't meet our usual standards but would suggest alerting us to any issue before finishing it. In this instance, it made it tricky for our waiter to redress the situation. We are of course disappointed that your chose to give us a poor score after having had many excellent meals.... Hopefully your next review will match your usually high satisfaction levels. A bientôt!

Without a doubt this was the very BEST restaurant we ate in, in New Zealand over a 3 week period, comparing many restaurants in many cities. This is the very best New Zealand has to give. We couldn’t fault a thing. We were directed here by the locals of Lake Wanaka but be warned without a booking you won’t get in. It’s extremely popular. It looks like a French Restaurant from the outside and didn’t take us long without an address to track it down on Golf Course Rd. They list themselves as Modern French Cuisine but without a doubt this is authentic French fare. Its decadent and elegant dining. From the time you arrive everything sits just right. The service is casual and friendly and appears very much a family affair. We sat on the terrace which was closed in with plastic walls and mushroom heaters for warmth, under dimmed lighting and in super comfortable seating with a great atmosphere. I can just imagine how beautiful this area must be in summer overlooking Lake Wanaka. The whole experience was unexpectedly brilliant for all four of us. Every course had a WOW factor, was tasty and presented on the plate like a Claude Monet painting. The presentation was flawless. The wine service was “self service” on their credit tab card and allowed us to try far too many NZ wines by the glass over the course of 3 hours including a wonderful New Zealand sticky. The service is unrushed and make sure you leave room for the wonderfully decadent sweets on offer. How this place does not have a Chefs Hat is beyond me. Well done guys, an amazing experience and you’ve nailed it!!!

Visited in the summer for an excellent meal, returning four months later and the new menu was even better than before. The short rib was particularly good.

Consistently high quality food, friendly professional service, all round top quality venue

My wife and 3 kids had a great dinner experience at Bistro Gentil. Starting with the 'off menu' choices for our kids which they loved. Our daughter had duck with dauphin potatoes. The service was fantastic and not overwhelming and stuck up like many other places of this calibre. I loved the wine card and wine dispenser system which allows you to taste and match wines with your food. I had the steak tartare and lamb. Both outstanding. The setting was fantastic with great art works and views of the lake (in daylight). My families favourite dessert was the creme brûlée. Best restaurant in Otago, probably New Zealand and as good as most top notch eateries in Sydney and Melbourne. A surprise to find a place like this in Wanaka. I felt so strongly about this place that I wrote my first tripadvisor review.

Relatively small menu to choose from (which I find good), yet sufficient choice to satisfy most tastes. We had the duck and a rib eye steak. The duck was very good, the steak rather disappointing - sinewy and somewhat tough. The main dishes are not served with any vegetables, so be prepared to pay extra for these. The desserts we had - creme brulee - was very good, but I felt overpriced at $22 each. All in all a pleasant experience, but be prepared to pay upmarket prices.
