Recently spent a night at the Wanaka Hotel, cost was $99 and for that we got a Queen sized bed plus a set of bunks, everything was clean and tidy including the bathroom, bed was reasonably comfortable, TV not large but adequate, even a small balcony with chairs. We never ate in either of the hotel restaurants, we cooked our own breakfast in the very well equipped kitchen for use by guests, an excellent idea to avoid eating out all the time.
Receptionist was pleasant and helpful, all in all pleasant night's stay.
Would recommend if you are not looking for superior accommodation but something adequate for a night's stay in a good location.

Room Tip: Bottom floor towards back of hotel.

This hotel is nothing special, but it's a good place to lay your head for a night. A great location and reasonable price, I'd recommend this to a friend. My husband and I reserved a room on our way driving between Franz Josef and Te Anau. The staff was helpful and while outdated, the room was just fine for a night's rest.

Stayed 2 or 3 times during skiing season. Rooms are basic, clean and price was right for location and state of the rooms. Has shared kitchen facilities so can do own cooking if required. Overall basic accommodation but priced accordingly. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Third stop on our road trip after an amazing drive went to the i-site on the lake front and got us a room for, wait for it.......$89!!!
I-site told us it was bit old but good and clean.
Wow this place should be marketed to hippies and the like. You can't call it retro or kitsch because I'm pretty sure it's the real original deal!
Pink and green painted furniture, carpets halfway up the walls and a radio in the wall above the bed! and it smelt a bit like Granny so the windows were kept wide open whenever we were in the room, it was a real giggle although I don't think it's meant to be. Desk staff were friendly & helpful.
Room was quite spacious, tea & coffee making facilities, on site coffee shop and bar.
We cooked in the communal kitchen whch was very well equiped. There are some outside seating area's which we used in the early evening and got eaten alive by mossies, keeping the windows open was a massive mistake, by next morning I had about 15 bites, I kind of looked like I had the plague :( so much so that I had to visit the pharmacy next day as my anti-histamine tablets weren't cutting in in the fight against the raging itchies.
Had a nice walk along the lake front next morning then went to Puzzling World

i tried to ask a very simple question about how many actual beds & bed sizes are in the room i wanted to book. not how many people the room sleeps & they came back to me with a very general answer seemingly avoiding the question, so i tried to ask again & they didnt even bother to reply.. so i didnt bother to stay there.
their lack of response gives me a fair idea what sort of service & attitude they have toward their customer.
i booked elsewhere, paid a lot more, but got very good service.

Very well located hotel which, whilst perfectly comfortable, needs a bit of TLC to enable it to fulfil its potential; the bathrooms in particular need to be upgraded. Very much enjoyed the dinner in the adjoining Cafe which was open just for our Tour group - one of the best meals we ate in New Zealand. Breakfast on the other hand was a bit chaotic with too many people trying to get served in the very limited space available.
