“Tiny room,joke fridge,sullen reception.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 April 2013

Stay somewhere else. We wondered how a "hotel" could be so badly designed. Perhaps that wasnt its intent. The fridge looked like something the hotel bought as an afterthought. Its had a logo on the side advertising a drink and a light at the top. Clearly it wasnt ever meant to be installed in hotel rooms. A block of wood shoved at the back to vent it and its over all sloppy installation is further evident that it was a retrofit. The room is so tiny there is hardly room to put your bags anywhere. The bathroom has no vanity and its hard to find a spot to balance anything!
The receptionist was very sullen and didnt tell us anything about the "resort". It looked like it had a nice pool area but we didnt investigate. We stayed in a room on the top floor of 3 rooms. It was incredibly hot. With no fly screens,no air-conditioning and midges these rooms would be unbearable in summer. The outdoor table was falling apart. Other than that ok room. I think next time I would find a nice b and b. Its quite a drive to town from the Hotel, you couldnt walk.

Room Tip: if its warm you may be better in a downstairs room.

Stayed for two nights for a friend's wedding (reception held at The Venue - easy stumble across the road at night's end). Special wedding rate was more than reasonable - $130/night for studio apartment. Wish I had more time to enjoy the pools and the Day Spa.
The room was tidy when I arrived and the electric blanket was turned on lowest setting (awesome since there was a chill in the air). I was shocked that the tv wasn't digital especially since the switchover is in a few weeks time - granted I wasn't there to watch tv. The kitchen had all necessary tools to build a tea or coffee. Bathroom was tidy as well though the shower grout could use a really good scrub to brighten it up. Little annoyances - the lack of a towel rail, and the mirror wasn't above the sink basin - rather there was a window with the mirror off to the side.
I was impressed that my unit wasn't cleaned until after I left for the wedding. Bed was remade, some fresh towels left, rubbish bags removed, and my mugs from the morning cleaned and put away. For the environmentally conscious, there is an option to be green and not have the room serviced.
I forgot to mention to reception that I couldn't figure out how to turn on the lights outside beside the entrance to the unit or maybe they just didn't work. Once the main door is opened, the hallway lights are turned on by sensors.
My access card failed to work at one point so I couldn't get in but I called from my cell phone and they had activated new ones within minutes which I had to pick up from reception.
Check-out was a breeze. One of my friends was the driver for the weekend and her car battery died. One of the guys at reception organised another worker and himself to jump start her car for her. This was done within 10 minutes of realising there was a problem.

Room Tip: Ground floor units can hear foot traffic from unit above. End unit means only one neighbour to worr...

Stayed there for a week while touring the wonderful South Island of New Zealand with my family of six, and it was a very pleasant stay at the Mercure. Although it kinda is away from Lake Wanaka itself, it's just a few minutes drive. The pool and restaurants were pretty good as well! One weird thing, though, was that the doorknobs and the bathrooms didn't have locks on them, but luckily we didn't need that much privacy.

On the positive side, we had a great room: large, with a full kitchen including hob, oven, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, microwave and lots of cutlery and crockery. The bed was comfortable and there was a dining table for four and a couple of sofas. There was also a washing machine and tumble dryer in the bathroom, though the dryer vented into the bathroom resulting in dripping walls and floor - should be vented to outside, surely? The walls seemed a little thin, as we could hear our neighbours' TV and presumably they could hear ours. The TV was an old analog Sony Trinitron CRT unit, which will be obsolete in NZ in a couple of weeks when the country goes digital. Future guests may get a watchable TV, ours wasn't really.

The whole place felt very empty and under-occupied. Maybe we were there at low season, but we only saw a few other guests and hardly any staff apart from the reception clerks.

The spa area was a long outdoor walk from our room - there was a short route that was pointed out on a map of the place when I checked in, but when we came to use it it was blocked by stacks of logs. Perhaps the reception staff don't get out much? The spa felt odd to be in, with no-one else around. The whole area was very concrete-y and hard, and not very pleasant to spend time in.

You're a couple of km out of Wanaka meaning you have to drive into town for restaurants and shops, and this just adds to the feeling of the hotel being out of the way.

This is yet another place which wants to charge guests extra for using the wireless internet connection, which makes no sense at all to me. I'm convinced these places would do better to factor the cost of the wireless service into the room rate and provide it as a "free" service to guests, like they do hot water and electricity in the rooms.

I have stayed at this "hotel" on four occasions, and am in Wanaka every three weeks for business. I have continued to give this place "another go" but have decided sitting here in my unclean, badly laid out, (should be a motel) unit, I have decided this will be the last time.

I stay at many hotels and motels in the South island and this is by far the worst. What a pity to have a great location like Wanaka, and a hotel that advertises as being 4.5 star yet doest meet evn basic requirments I and many others would expect for a hotel of this rating.

Where do I start.....
- Every time I stay, I am put in a different room. The quality, size and layout varies everytime. I never know what to expect, often awkward layouts and no conceirge here- drag your bag up the stairs and help yourself.
-Extremley limited power points, in awkard to reach places. Not ideal at all for business, or a tourist who wishes to boil the kettle and charge the camera at the same time. -Good luck to you!
-20 year old tvs - Yes im talking the CRT type large backs, takes a few mins to warm up, large bulky- you know the ones- usually in cheap motels! How on earth they will deal with the freeview changeover I have no idea .The remote is missing the back and the batteries keep falling out.
-My room has black mould in the shower, rusty and grimy shower edges, something on the wall? I dont care to thinnk too much about what!
- Whatever you do dont attempt to eat at the restuarant. If you can call it that? Small pokey, lack of service. I have had brekfast everytime and although there are no guests, it takes 10 minutes for someone to seat me- the sign says to wait, then I have to go and ask for cutlery. Nothing special here; weetbix, yoghurt, tinned fruit and toast- motel??
- If its raining, theres no easy way to reception or brekfast- you walk in the weather whatever it may be. The hotel was originally laid out with convinent paths, but the owners must have decided they are spots better put to use as firewood staking areas- and theres no way around them apart from the long way.
- Service is the pits. Grumpy reception, who always beleives they are right- not the customer. Owner clearly doesnt care about feedback- you wont see any service review forms here, and If you care to tell someone your issues, they usually choose to ignore you.

Whomever decided this was a 4.5 star hotel must of been bribed, and I guarantee it would struggle to get three stars if it was reviewed. I think it would make a great motor lodge.
My visits have been late 2012 and 2013 on a regular basis.

Room Tip: Rooms 1-19 are probably the worst. If you have to stay here... avoid these ones.

Our hotel room was extremely small and very hot. You couldn't open the cupboard door as it collided with the bedside table (or half a bedside table). The view was over the car park and we had to carry our cases upstairs with no help being offered (we are both in our 60's). The food in the restaurant was uninspiring and the location is just in the middle of nowhere. I complained about our room but the receptionist was totally disinterested. I would not stay here again and would not recommend it to anyone. The fridge was in the cupboard and was minute. Altogether the worst place we stayed in in NZ.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade and good luck

We stayed march 2013
First the plus: the room is new and very clean with a nice bed
Second the minuses: view of the pebbly driveway, door has glass so not only light comes in but anyone walking past can see inside! Can't open the curtains as everyone can see in so you feel like you are in a box. Very noisy can hear the neighbours phone and conversations very clearly and disturbing, loud party til well after midnight. No breakfast room service, no air con, shower screen way too small. No shops close by. Need a car to get to Wanaka. So bad changing to another hotel. Not the place for a romantic getaway. Ok if you want to go to the ski field and you only need a bed but no privacy. This was a business and couple weekend.
