“Love coming here!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 May 2014

We stay at the Oakridge Wanaka at least once each year and again, we weren't disappointed this time. We stayed in a 1 bedroom unit, there was ample space, it's well designed, loved the King bed, good kitchen facilities and of course, one of the main reasons we stay here is for the Hot Pools / heated swimming pool - just brilliant! Looking at the rooms and facilities we think it's great value for money - enjoy!

The hotel complex is lovely and looks to have a very nice pool & spa area (we didn't use it as we didn't have swimsuits with us), but the room itself was quite disappointing and seems to have been very poorly designed. We stayed in a standard king room and, on the plus side, the room was very light, with lovely big windows all along one wall. And very spacious, with plenty of room for our luggage and being able to move around easily. And there was a nice big wardrobe, where we were able to hang our jackets. And the bed was very comfortable and definetley king size. But that is where the positives ended.

The walls were paper-thin and we could hear everything from the room next door. So much so that, while I was in the shower and the guests next door turned up, I actually thought my husband was speaking to people in our room, such was the level of noise through the wall. There is a very comfortable armchair in the room, but only one, so the other person has to sit on the bed. The tv is in a very odd position on the wall - far off-centre on the wall at the end of the bed - and is mounted in such a way that it can not be angled in different positions, so the best place to view the tv (without having to crane your neck) is on the floor next to one side of the bed. The bedside lamps were mismatched - one was a very nice designer-looking lamp, while the other was a tatty old black desk lamp. And the controls for the shower (shower over bath) were not on the same wall as the showerhead, as they usually are, but on the long wall of the shower, positioned at arm level so that every time you moved your arm while showering, the temperature/shower pressure got knocked. The bit of glass you usually find on shower over bath was also too short and the bathroom floor ended up covered in water. The location, while nice and quiet, is also quite a distance from Wanaka - although there is the option of the Lone Star restaurant just a 5 minute walk from the hotel. Most disappointing of all was the fact that the tiny bar fridge in our room didn't work. We didn't realise this until about 9pm, by which time all our food that we had put in it 6 hours earlier was warm and spoiled. Surprisingly, on a 10 day road trip of the South Island - where we stayed at some very basic and retro motels - the Grand Mercure Oakridge Resort was the most disappointing of all the accommodation we stayed in, while it was the one we had the highest hope for.

We got a very warm welcome from reception on arrival but beyond that we were quite disappointed.

Our room was tidy but could use a proper clean, quite dusty in places. Walls seem to be paper thin and can even hear taps running in next room. On a night where there doesn't seem to be many guests, we were put at the very back of the complex right next to other guests, surrounded by what appear to be empty rooms.

The laundry is expensive enough and was annoying to see that after paying $6 for drying, the clothes were still damp and needed a few more minutes, requiring another $6. It was less than half full so can't imagine how many times you'd need to feed the dryer with your $$$ for a full load.

After dinner in town, we decided to check out the 'bar' for a drink. It seems like part of it had been curtained off or, for a place this size, it's a tiny restaurant, about 6 or 7 tables, all full. Not usually a problem, but the waitresses reaction to us asking for a table was a look of panic and a 'no'. No suggestion to come back later or any sign of them opening up more tables due to demand.

We have one more night here and had originally planned eating in the restaurant one of the two nights, but I think it'll be a trip into Wanaka again tomorrow.

Thank you for your feedback. We apologize we did not meet your expectations and take on board your comments in our strive to provide the best possible service for our guests. We have spoken to our housekeeping team to ensure our high standards of room cleanliness remain constant. We have also spoken to our restaurant team regarding suggesting alternative dining times for guests and believe the other area you were referring to is a conference dining area. We have also contacted this guest directly regarding his complaint with the guest laundry costs. Once again thank you for your feedback and we wish you all the best on your onward travels.

Only booked because is was part of the accor hotel group.
Said it was 4 star, does look it from the outside, but inside rooms and service was a huge let down.
The reception girl on was Harriet. Not helpful at all on check in, did not even look at the accor card I put right in front of her, she purposely ignored. We asked if possible to have a slight upgrade, but we were told would have to pay for it. As a "accor Platinum" member we were told they do not honor any of the benefits! First accor hotel ever to say this, I was shocked. We asked for a late check out in the morn of 12 but were told we can't as their are other people coming into our room even though hotel was only 1/3 full and extremely quiet!
Room had a very small panel heater and a very small bathroom. The shower head came up only as high as my chin literally. Bed was very uncomfy. Tv is put up high in the very corner of the room and you cannot see from one side of bed. Lamp on tv side did not work at all.
We have to admit that the restaurant food and service was great, very impressed.
But overall worst accor hotel we have ever stayed in, and is not really a accor hotel, as doesn't recognize members, would never book again. Also furthest hotel away from town. Would rate the room we stayed in at about 2.5 stars

Bed very uncomfortable. We were very tired and didn't tell reception until morning after a bad night

Stayed for one night of our Otago tour, and felt very let down. On checkin, we were told the restaurant is closed and only serving bar snacks, really disappointed as we were tired and just wanted a meal in the hotel instead of driving into town.
Booked a one bedroom apartment and while the apartment itself was clean enough, the balcony was disgusting. The table and chairs were covered in spider webs (not just a couple, but entirely covered, so much so, my husband used a towel to wipe the table and chairs down we wanted to sit in). The complete outside was poorly cleaned. Does housekeeping not bother with the outside of the property?
There was no remote for the tv in the bedroom and no bedside lamps to dim the lights at nightime, just glaring overhead ones.
Was very sad that I prepaid the full rate prior to arriving, as I would have turned around and left.
I rated this as an average, as the room itself was clean and well stocked with everything you would need. It's a shame that once you left the room, everything went downhill.

Thank you for your feedback. We apologize that we did not meet your expectations and have taken your comments on board in our endeavor to provide the best service for our guests. Our restaurant does close on certain nights but our bar meals are still available for purchase. We recently had a large storm pass through Wanaka and while this is no excuse for untidiness outside the rooms, some areas to longer than usual to attend to. We do provide remotes with all our T.V's and we have spoken to our housekeeping staff to ensure that none are missing, we are more than happy to resolve any issue like this during your stay. We take heart that you enjoyed our room cleanliness and facilities. Once again thank you for your feedback and we wish you all the best on your onward travels.
