Good sized rooms. The spa was great and big. But the light that was on in it really ruined the atmosphere. Close to skiing.

Staff not particularly helpful or friendly and never seemed available.

Overall a good spot to stay for the position and rooms.

Room Tip: Go with friends and get a multiple bedroom unit. They're awesome

We stayed at Benbrae for 4 nights, after having stayed at the Cardrona Mountain Apartments for 5.
Benbrae was nice.
The 3-bedroom apartment we had was very spacious; a good size for a family of 6.
The colour schemes were nice and restful.
And the outdoor spa was the perfect touch: hot enough to relieve aching muscles, and to make it worthwhile tiptoeing through the cold to get there. We also loved the schist stone surrounds of the spa/pool area.

That being said, the apartment was nice but definitely not luxury.
Luxury for me in a Central Otago setting would mean a roaring fireplace; preferably stone or schist. That would be amazing. No, but there was a gas-fire fake wood stove that lit at a touch of a button with a modern surround, which is definitely better than nothing.

The furnishings and fittings were pretty average:
fake wood look-alike floors;
a dining table that the bigger members of the family couldn't fit their legs under;
a metal bunk bed with joints that squeaked, which sort of defeats the point of trying to get kids to sleep at the same time. And other little things: The compendium of information is useful, but hard to read where the pages come together. Nothing major, just little niggles that add up.
The fridge door opened towards the wall, rather than into the kitchen. Again, not a major but it just shows lack of attention to detail.
The DVD player didn't want to work for us. The TV made loud static-y noises whenever changing channels; difficult when you want to let kids have control of the remote!
The furniture is all average, mass-produced stuff. Again, under the billing "luxury", I would have hoped for a few local, artisan-produced pieces which tie to local community and environment into the place.

The drying room is a great concept, but alas, poor execution. It would benefit from a night store heater and/or underfloor heating. The only heating I found in there was a wall-based one that turns itself off after a few minutes. Thank goodness for the heated towel rails and the dryer or our stuff would have stayed wet.

The hosts were very sweet; always accommodating and not complaining even when I woke one of them up in the morning. However, not very proactive either, compared with the Cardrona Mountain Apartments where someone came by every night to make sure everything was okay (and the rubbish was emptied daily; and the tiny drying closet was very adequately warm).
The hosts accepted delivery of a parcel for me the day before we arrived, which was also nice.

There were rubbish and recycling facilities outside, which meant we could tidy up after ourselves. This works well.
Also the outdoor setting is beautiful and well done.

I feel churlish complaining; but there are so many small details that could be sorted out with some care and attention to make this a nicer place to stay.
I feel churlish complaining as they

Room Tip: We stayed in Unit 1; which was nice and close to the pool. However, from our shower we could look up...

We spent three nights staying at Benbrae in Cardrona, and were very happy with our choice.

LOCATION

Benbrae is situated in Cardrona village, which is between Queenstown and Wanaka, at the base of the mountain road up to Cardrona Alpine Resort. This means that it only takes 15-20 minutes to get up there, so you can either easily beat the rush without having to get up too early. Its right next to the iconic Cardrona Hotel. It you are planning on skiing/boarding at Cardrona, then this is a great place to stay.

SERVICE

The hosts were more than accommodating right from the start, with quick and friendly replies to our email enquiries. We wanted a one bedroom apartment so we could put our baby down to sleep in the evenings, without him being disturbed while we watched tv. This property only had studio units, or larger two & three bedroom villas, so we were very appreciative when the host offered us the option of a 2 bedroom villa with one bedroom locked off - exactly what we needed!!

When we arrived, I was greeted by Lee-anne, who was very welcoming, and the check-in process was quick and hassle-free. And I got the feeling she would have been more than happy to try and assist us with anything should we need it.

VILLA

The villa was extremely spacious, clean, well-equipped, and stylishy appointed, with space to park our car right at the front door.

The full kitchen had everything you needed to cook a meal, with modern appliances. A four burner gas hob, and oven, full-sized fridge-freezer, dish washer, microwave, kettle, toaster etc.

You certainly wont freeze staying here, even in the midst of winter! There was a wall heater in the bedroom which kept things cosy, fan heaters in the bathroom and laundry/drying room, and a gas heater for fast and effective heating of the living area, as well as a gas fireplace providing further heating as well as great ambience. There were also heated towel rails in the bathroom, and the drying room. The private drying room/laundry was fantastic for getting things dry ready for your next time up the mountain.

The shower had fantastic pressure, with three different spray settings, great for soothing those aching muscles after a hard day on the slopes. And the gas water meant a never-ending supply of hot water.

The bed was kingsized, and very comfortable for a great nights sleep. And the wooden blinds did a great job of blocking out the daylight, so you can enjoy a sleep in, if your not heading up the mountain for an early start.

And the villa was very well sound proofed. We certainly werent disturbed by any other guests staying at the resort....werent even aware of any vehicle noise from cars as they past our villa.

There were plenty of towels provided, and thoughtful extras such as complimentary laundry/dishwash powder. There was also a information compendium which had all the information you needed about the villa and the resort. It didnt have information about local attractions or the ski resort, but I'm sure this would have been available if I'd enquired at reception.

RESORT FACILITIES

We had dinner at the Sombre Duck while we were there, which is a cosy little wine bar located on-site at Benbrae. The wood-fired pizzas there were fantastic....possibly some of the best we've had in NZ. Would highly recommend them!

Didnt get a chance to try out the swimming pool or jacuzzi during our stay, but it certainly looked lovely.

OVERALL

I'd be happy to come and stay here again, and would happily recommend this accommodation to others.

This was our much anticipated an very much needed holiday back to New Zealand to go snowboarding...
We were greeted by Lee-Anne upon arrival who had our room ready for our week stay.
The room was PERFECT it had everything that we needed for our week (i.e Heater) an was like a home away from home an was exceptionally cosy, well appointed an catered to all our needs.
The location of the Benbrae is perfect for those travelling to the ski resort daily as it is a short drive up the road.
The Sombre Duck delivers the best pizza I have ever tasted I'd go back for those alone :)
Lee- Anne does a wonderful job hosting her guests an her husband also.
All in all it was the perfect desitination, the most amazing service an accom an we cant wait to return.

We will be back!!!!!!

This was our second stay at Benbrae during the ski season. The units are spacious and comfortable and the hosts are always very helpful to assist with enquiries and any problems that arise. The pool area is not set up for winter use and facilities here would be a definite improvement. Proximity to Cardrona skifield is great meaning apres ski at the pub can be enjoyed without having to drive.

Room Tip: Go for the 2 bedroom rather than the studio if staying during winter.

Thanks for taking the time to provide us with some constructive feedback. We will take these comments on board and investigate options to make the pool area better equipped for the cooler months.

The units at Benbrae were very spacious and clean and tidy. The kitchen was well appointed and the hosts were happy to provide anything additional that we needed for the kitchen.

Overall, the beds were very comfortable and we all got a great nights sleep. I was impressed with the extra skiing facilities like heated towel rails in the laundry to get all the ski gear dry.

The room we were given was warm and comfortable. This was due to the panel heaters in the bedrooms and gas heating (heater and fire) in the lounge. There was a notice coolness at floor level (ie if you left any clothes on the floor, they were very cold to pick up the next morning).

The hosts were very helpful and gave good advice on skiing etc.

Outside the room, the pool area was very nice but not set up for winter. A dip in the spa after skiing would have been nice but there were no open facilities down by the spa pool. So to use it you would had to run back to your unit in the swimmers in 2 degree temperatures! The resort needs better facilities down in the pool area.

I was also really disappointed by the TV. It was an old 29" with very poor sky reception. Watching the Olympics was interested as it was that fuzzy, you could not see the hockey ball. For a high end resort, there is no excuse for not having satelitte Sky these days.

But overall, we would definitely stay at Benbrae again if skiing at Cardrona (if not skiing Cardrona, it was quite a drive from Wanaka).

Stayed for a week while skiing. The lodges are very pleasant and are kitted out to a reasonably high standard. The heated tub was welcome after a day on the slopes and is a great place to stretch tired muscles, but it would be a brave soul who ventured into the swimming pool in the middle of winter! Pizza was good too, and the Cardrona Hotel is always great. The wifi internet is really slow and was the only slight downside.
