“Lovely lodge, lovely hosts”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2009

We had a little trouble finding the place initially but what a welcome we received when we found it! Paul and Bernie were so welcoming and friendly, and shared with us the story behind Maple Lodge over tea and homemade biscuits. Somehow they found out it was our wedding anniversary (my husband's doing, I suspect!) and surprised us with a bottle of sparkling wine.

The guest lounge was impressive, quite stately but with a homely feel - it was very well thought out. The guest room was cosy, a little smaller than the other b&bs we had stayed in but very clean, with thick carpeting, a really comfortable bed and its own patio. The shower was superb! There was no tv in the room so tv buffs would need to get their tv fix in the guest lounge, which has a nice flat screen tv.

Breakfast was lavish - the muffins were truly award winning and the pancakes ... really yummy. Paul even gave us some muffins to take away with us when we left. Maple Lodge was pricier than the other places we had stayed in but the warm hospitality, beautiful place and good food made for an anniversary we would not soon forget.

There just isn't a detail that Berny and Paul missed. Even the amenities in the rooms are chosen with eco-friendliness in mind. Being there in March was especially lovely with the myriad Maples in their autumn reds, and in the hot tub in the garden one sees the trees and mountains in the distance. Berny and Paul are welcoming, full of information and provide a serene atmosphere for true relaxation and the beds are THE BEST I've EVER slept in! Many thanks

The Maple Lodge is 1 and 1/2 years old and still feels new. The handicap facilities are first rate and there is reserved handicap parking.. The internet, well, so-so. Paul, the host, says he limits per client access to 50 mB, which isn't much, but I'm not sure it's true. What is true is that the internet service fails rather frequently, although I don't think it's his fault.

Don't be put off by it's location on a small dirt road that branches off a bigger dirt road. It's what you find when you get there that's important. The innkeepers Paul and Bernie are eager to make your stay enjoyable.

Breakfast features their own eggs, laid by free range hens.

The facility is 4 1/2 kilometers out of town--fast by car but probably more than most would want to walk. The setting is very tranquil with sheep located right next door. If one iistens carefully, one can hear their baaing in the background,

Try it, you'll like it.

We travelled new zealand for 4 weeks and maple lodge was one of the best places we stayed at. We loved the comfortable bed and the spacious and very clean bathroom.
Breakfast each morning was something to look forward to, especially the pancakes with fresh fruit!
Also liked the fact that it is located outside Wanaka in a beautiful location with wonderful views of the coutryside and the mountains.
And of course the dog, always nice wen you are away from home, to have somekind of a replacement for your own pet. And this one really liked our attention!

We stayed at Maple Lodge for three nights in December 2008 - what a wonderful place! The owners, Paul and Berny and such special people, and make you so welcome from the moment you arrive. We just wished we could have stayed so much longer - we really did not want to leave!

The lodge is situated in such a perfect country location, which is so peaceful and so beautiful, and yet only a few minutes drive to the picturesque town of Wanaka, with it's wonderful restaurants and shops.

Paul and Berny have purpose built the lodge, and must say they have designed it wonderfully well. Each room has it's own patio or balcony overlooking the tranquil garden. The rooms are beautifully and tastefully furnished, are absolutely immaculate......and of course that bed..........just SO comfortable! The attention to detail is absolutely first class.

The breakfasts that Paul cooked, together with the packed lunch that Berny prepared for us one day were just so delicious. They even gave us a couple of their delicious home made muffins to take away with us, on the day we checked-out - such a lovely touch.

If you are planning on staying in the Wanaka area, please book yourself a room at Maple Lodge, as you are guaranteed to have a wonderful experience.

We will be back one day.......next time we visit New Zealand!

Maple Lodge is absolutely lovely. Bernie and Paul have paid attention to both the seen and unseen details here.

The bed was the most comfortable I have ever had in any accommodation anywhere (and we travel a lot), it is even better than our bed at home! Crispy white sheets. Everything spotlessly clean. Soundproofed walls and doors. The place is nicely located - just outside the town in a rural setting with nice views of the gardens and mountains, but close enough to be a quick drive to restaurants in the evening, and close to all the attractions.

The bathroom was large with a huge shower and I loved the underfloor heating and warm towel racks (we were there skiing in winter). J enjoyed at spa (outdoors) gazing up at the stars.

The breakfasts were lovely - really tasty, not at all greasy full breakfasts and beautiful freshly home-baked muffins.

Paul and Bernie provided advice on great restaurants in town. They were always on hand to provide jugs of milk or whatever whimsical thing us tourists were asking for/about.

  • Liked — everything seemed to be quality plus more
  • Disliked — nothing

We had previously visited North Island in 1993. Now we wanted to see South Island a much overdue visit.
We flew direct to Queenstown and then drove over the mountain pass to Wanaka with such Fantastic views all the way .
On arrival at Maple Lodge we were shown to our large luxury bedroom room complete with a shower/wet room big enough for two.Our own veranda to enjoy the setting sun.
Paul and Bernadette offered much welcomed refreshment with home made award winning Muffins and home made jams.
The breakfast menu had all the usual qualities being home made just how we wanted it but the Fresh fruit filled Pancake is not to be missed.
The Lodge is contemporary yet with the inclusion of original timber features it has a very homely and has a welcoming atmosphere.
With so many restaurant in the town evening meals were easily arranged by Paul. Sitting overlooking the lake with good food and company was something quite special.
The opportunity to meet fellow guests in the evening with a glass of wine gave us the chance to ensure we did not miss the hidden treasures the area had to offer. Our hosts were there to contribute and sort the itinerary.
The Wanaka airport is only 2 miles down the road and our holiday highlight was to be picked up by helicopter from our own front door and shown the glaciers and lakes.
A location not to be missed. Fantastic.
