I was visiting Aberdare National park & preferred to stay here than the more historically romantic Treetop lodge where " A young girl princess climbed up the steps of this lodge & came down next morning as the Queen of UK & the whole Commonwealth!"In Feb.52 Queen Elizabeth had become queen over night with the death of her father & had to be rushed to be sworn in as the Queen.

I arrive at the Aberdare Country club & then after depositing one`s luggage & only taking some things for the over night stay are driven to the Ark.The rooms are at 3 levels & the preferred one is the level 1 from where one can see animals at eye level.I was on ist floor & had given instructions to be woken up when an animal is sighted at the water hole which is just opposite. The rooms are small, cramped & very cold but you are given a hot water bottle & warm blanket.

The food served has a wide variety & good, served in a buffet style. The staff is pleasant & helpful.Well animals-saw some elephants, a black Rhino & Hyena.Worth for the night stop over & the forest atmospherics!

The Ark is a very interesting hotel, which u have to reach via their sister lodge the Aberdares country club. The wide glass windows ( at four levels) overlook the waterhole giving the impression of standing on the deck of a ship. And the waterhole( when we visited) was teeming with elephants of various sizes. At different times it was visited by cape buffaloes, warthogs, kudus, hyenas. Two jennet cats seem to visit it every night. our only regret was that we missed the leopard which some of our fellow travellers managed to see. The accommodations were ok, but the food could have been better.

The ark lodge is sister lodge to the aberdare country club, where we arrived at noon and were taken to, by about 4 pm. We spent a night at the Ark in early August and it was very cold and rainy (winter in kenya - carry woollens). The unique thing about the ark is we got to see animals come to the flood lit watering hole and salt lick all thru the night from the 4 viewing galleries at different levels of the lodge. They have devised a bell ringing system that notifies rooms when an animal arrives at the watering hole. The small rooms are functional - three single beds with a clean bathroom and, importantly, with a view of the watering hole. The buffet dinner was good and they had a very nice bar too. Given that it was a rainy cold night we saw very few animals, but the experience is not to be be missed. A very knowledgeable ranger gives an hour long pre dinner talk and answers questions about the animals at aberdare national park - don't miss it!!

Amazing little Ark in the bush..... I will be honest it wasn't the very best..... BUT.. All the problems we had were ironed out with smiles and apologies.. Just very unfortunate but there is always one isn't there!!!! It is still a beautiful place to visit. Again another great place to stop on your up country trip to Meru and Samburu. Lunch at the Aberdare Country club and then a drive in there rustic bus to the Ark for Tea and to start waiting for the animals to come to the pool. You don't have to wait long, in fact they were there when we got there.Buffalos and Elephants.... At night it is spotlighted and all the nocturnals come to investigate.... If you have gone to bed and don't want to miss a visitor to the pool, the buzzer will certainly wake you up....My only problem was the food. Was very disappointed I must say, but was assured they would look into it. Which I am sure they will......everyone very friendly. Do go with warm clothing for the evening as it is cold up there and being up till the wee hours of the morning....... Certainly worth a visit......

Room Tip: A room looking over the pool is maybe the best, always some action. BUT Forest facing could be an ad...

The facility is much nicer than the pictures show on line. The rooms are amble size, not fancy but clean. Windows look onto the huge watering hole where elephants, water buffalo, antelope, wart hogs and other various animals come to drink and suck rocks for minerals. The lounges are nice, fun decorations. When you arrive, you walk along raised wooden walkways to reach the hotel; bird feeding is part of the experience. The staff were very nice and the food was good. It is a unique experience that would add to anyone's trip to Kenya. Keep your window closed though, bush babies like to join you otherwise.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that looks onto the watering hole.

It was simply amazing. We were sleeping and then were awoken to watch a hunting scene. There were buffaloes at the watering hole and a pride of lions going in for the kill. It was so amazing. The food, accommodation and staff were also pretty great!

We stayed one night at The Ark and had a wonderful time. It's a hotel next to a water hotel in the middle of the forrest part of the Aberdare reserve, and a sister to the country club.

It's a different type of safari because you don't have to go to a game drive to see animals, you see them in the comfort of one of the 4 lounges the hotel has. They are all equipped with comfy sofas so you can wait for the rhino or leopard to come and drink. They even have fast wi fi!!!

Rooms are pretty small but it compensates with the common areas. Food is of good quality and taste. People are helpful and they even have have a talk to explain more about the park, animals and they wilk try to respond pretty much any question you could have regarding Kenya's parks.

Bring warm clothes because it can get a bit cold at night.
