We only stayed one night as part of a two week tour of Kenya but would loved to have stayed longer. We had a chalet which was beautifully decorated and so warm at night (it can very cold here). If it hadn't been cloudy we would also have had a great view of Mount Kenya. The public rooms are so warm and welcoming and the food was delicious. As with everywhere we stayed in Kenya the staff were a delight. The lodge is perfectly placed between Abedares National Park and Solio Game Ranch. The only thing I would say is the chalets are quite a way from the restaurant and bar and the path to them is of a loose shale like material that isn't very stable and might result in a twisted ankle.

Room Tip: Can't comment on the tents but the chalet we had was gorgeous if a bit of a walk from the restau...

A nice place at the foot of the beautiful Aberdares with a great view and access to the great Laikipia plains with the magic Mt Kenya on the background. we stayed in this lodge for two nghts last weekend. The lodge is good, with nice rooms in the chalets and nice luxury tents, the bar area and restaurant are good, with good food, nice and friendly service, and plenty of choice in drinks. However, I didn't get excited at this place, while I have been excited at many other places in Kenya!! The place didn't do it for me. The German owner has put the entire place full with big flowers (sunflowers all over the place!!!) and bushes, not leaving any sense of space, so I felt quite claustophobic after a while. And the style of the interior in the accommodation an in the bar/restaurant was just not exciting.
All fine, if the price was good. And there's the big issue: far too expensive for what you get, IMHO. I have seen many places (hotels, lodges, camps) in Kenya and with KES25,000 pn for a 2 adults, 2 kids family this place turned out to be quite expensive without the super grandeur luxury of similar top-priced lodges. Note that while you're close, you are NOT exactly IN the Aberdares Park, neither IN the beautiful Solio Lodge. The noise highway is close. (also note that the location of the lodge on Google Maps is completely wrong. Why can't the owners/managers get this right???)

So yes, in summary, nice, well located in a beautiful surrounding, but the lodge itself didn't do it for us, with good standards, but no space, all so cramped, and overpriced. there are better value for money places in Kenya and in the area! I won't be coming again.

Room Tip: the calets (higher up) have a great view of Laikipa plains and Mt. Kenya. The tents don't.

Rhino Watch is a small well run lodge, just outside a few of Kenya's wildlife and natural attractions (5 minutes from Solio Ranch, 10 minutes from the Aberdare National Park). Note that it is not located inside a game farm itself, and so it is a perfect launching pad into multiple options, but does not offer the "watch the waterhole from the bar" experience that some other properties offer. The property is perfectly positioned for stunning views of Mt Kenya, especially early morning before it get hazed out or cloud covered, and the gardens offer a peaceful setting and good privacy.

I would recommend Rhino watch without hesitation. Really personal service and high quality, fresh food are a rare find in Kenya. Add to this the simple but nicely appointed rooms and the welcoming common areas, and you have a recipe for a relaxing holiday, a perfect base from which to explore the attractions of the area.

I stayed at Rhino watch for 2 nights and only left because I ad a problem with my rental car. The place is great and the staff super friendly. And the price, compared with other lodges in Kenia is very good. The chalets and tents are very nice decorated and the food was the best I ad in Kenya so far.

I stayed at Rhino Watch for 5 nights in Jan 2013 as part of a photography safari.
The staff couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful. The 3 & 4 course dinners were amazing - the food at all meals was top-class. I shared a tent and found it very comfortable. The lodge is very close to Ol Pejeta so very handy for that day of game driving, not far from Solio park. (Amazing wildlife viewing at both parks.) Toasty hot water bottle in bed after turn down service, along with chocolate on pillow! View Mt Kenya from the deck outside the restaurant. Highly recommended and would love to stay there again some day.

We stayed for the second time this year and we still love it. The whole setting is beautiful. The tents and chalets are spread across a beautiful garden. It is so peaceful with perfect views of Mount Kenya. The 2 game parks just a few minutes from the logde are excellent. We saw tons of rhinos as well as lions and the rest of the bunch on day one and in the Aberdere Park the following days lots of elephants and even a leopard. For the lodge, rooms are perfect, staff is super friendly and the food great. This is truely a Kenya highlight and we will be back there soon.

Rhino watch is in a fantastic central location from which to take game drives both to ranches on the plateau & to the Aberdares. We got a warm welcome from the friendly staff who were exceedingly helpful on the what, when, how of game drives and we went with their recommendations. We stayed for 4 nights in early October - days filled with magical game viewing. We had some lovely meals. Evenings were quiet at the lodge (apart from barking dogs nearby!).

We asked to start our game drive as early as possible and our Guide/driver collected us at 6.40 so to be in Solio Ranch for 7am opening and and wow were we rewarded by the sight of a family group of 5 rhinos with 5 minutes of arrival... and the day got better & better, cheetahs, oryx, jackels, eagles, lion, monkeys, giraffes, waterbuck etc etc. The total highlight was getting so close to both black & white rhino and other so memorable event was the totally unexpected "picnic" brought to us by Rhino Watch staff at lunctime & set up under a tree; piping hot pizza's, Juice, fresh fruit, coffee & cake.

Next morning saw us up slightly later for a day in the Aberdares, sights of fantastic forest elephants, different antelopes, hyena, sykes monkeys, buffolo, hawks, and all kinds fantastic bird life. We went high up to the (chilly) highlands so like Scotland & climbed down to see to Chania Waterfalls.

Our 3rd day of viewing was a really early start to a unforgettable day at Ol Pejeta/Sweetwaters (about 1.5 hrs away) where we again saw a fantasic range of animals & birds. Every time we turned there was something new or enthralling to see- we got to see one of last 7 Northern white Rhino in the world, by being quiet & patient near to the river we ended up being in the midst of a large group of 14 elephants incl young who passed within feet of us grazing away. We got to tickle the ears of a blind (tame!)Rhino- featured on the front page of Telegraph Magasine the month before- and we got surveyed by a group of 7 lions. The drive there & back over the windswept plateau provided a glimpse of of the bleak life of the displaced attempting to open up the land to crop farming.

Our guide Hasan from Rhino Watch was so impressive in his knowledge of animals & birds alike and patient in answering our questions and his use of local knowledge to get us close to animals & bird life. Game viewing vehicles provided were the best we had during our time in Kenya.

Room Tip: Tents at the top have fantastic views - it's a bit of a hike on rough stones in the dark so do u...
