“Freshest food ever!”
Reviewed 8 February 2014

Thank you, lovely people of the Rhino Watch Lodge for your warmth, hospitality and great food! Everything was fresh, tasty and unique. The chef could easily be working at an expensive 5 star restaurant in the Netherlands!

Room Tip: No tip needed, all chalets and tents are nice!

The garden is beautiful, the accomadtions are spaceful and clean, even though the decoration is outdated. There are many hiking possibilities around the lodge. The local staff is very friendly, however the Lodge lacks the cosy atmosphere and warmth that can be found in similar sized lodges elsewhere in Kenya. Much better places can be found for the same price in Kenya. We stayed 3 nights and had no hot water in our showers one evening and one morning - which is not really nice, considering how cold it is in this area.
We ordered a picnic basket on our first evening for the following day. We had ordered it for 7.30am, and of course it was not ready on time, and we had to wait for almost one hour before it was finally ready. The managers walked past us several times whilst we were waiting for the picnic basket, but they did not bother inquiring if we needed assistance or were waiting for something. The meals at the restaurant also always started half an hour late at every meal. This is not very nice when you are with hungry children who spent several hours hiking that day. We had the impression that the Lodge was not really managed by the owners and taht it was more or less self managed by the staff.

We had a wonderful 5 nights here last week. We stayed in one of the smaller Banda's and it was both simple but quality. Hot showers and a view from our bed looking out to Mount Kenya was unbelievable. Everyone was really friendly and the food was the best we've had in Kenya. We were on full board and we have put on the pounds! Rhino is excellent value if you are looking for a base outside of the main reserves and yet on the door step of all of them. We did a walking safari and a day in Solio Reserve, which has more Rhino's than you'll ever see anywhere else in your life. We loved our stay. Totally relaxing for what we needed. Just be aware that you'll need to pay in cash and internet is tenuous.

Room Tip: If you want the view from your room, then you'll need to go for a cottage/banda not a tent

We absolutely loved this place. We were in a tent, which is cold at night during the winter, so remember to take plenty of warm clothes, but you sleep in proper beds and hot water bottles are provided and the tent has a bathroom with the all-important hot shower. The food was excellent, particularly when you consider the staff often have power cuts to contend with, I think a lot of it was home-grown, a good variety of different dishes to eat each night and plenty of it, which is the key thing when you have been up at the crack of dawn to go on safari. If you had told me I could get an omelette made to order on a safari camp at 7am in Mount Kenya region prior to my visit, I would have said you were very silly indeed.

The whole place felt very well-cared for with beautiful gardens and we particularly enjoyed sitting around the fire for tea, coffee and drinks in the bar during the evenings, very cosy indeed. We were lucky enough to also have a very good guide who helped us make the most of Aberdare National Park, Solio, Ol Pejata and the giraffe walk at Aberdare country club. I would definitely recommend going on a walk to the Mau Mau cave too.

One tip is that it can feel cold in the dining room in the evening as there is no heating and the door has to be left open to allow staff to come and go. I appreciate that the climate is a challenge, particularly in winter, as the temperature varies so much from day to night, and believe me, the last thing I would want to see is electrical heaters (which would obviously be useless during power cuts anyway). For this reason, I would say it's definitely worth packing an extra jumper and then another extra jumper if you're the kind of person that likes to linger over dinner!

I stayed here with my two teenage sons and 7 year old daughter for two nights in one of the family lodges, which were very well laid out, and comfortable. We arrived late due to a tough drive from Nakuru (the road between there and Nyahururu is pretty poor, full of potholes), and were made to feel immediately welcome, even though dinner was about to be served, and we increased the numbers by 20%. The following day, I asked about options and was helped by the staff who arranged for us to be driven around the Abedares, with the intention that we would spend some time in the Solio Game Reserve the next morning...with us returning to Nairobi in the late afternoon. This plan was foiled by the fact that the weather on the Abedare drive became very cold (we had opted to see the Chania waterfalls, which was a 28 km drive up, up, up and was not sensible in that weather), and my elder son became quite sick over the night...hence we chose to drive gently back to Nairobi the next day. In retrospect we should have opted to go to the Solio on our full day, but one lives and learns. It is certainly true what people say about the foliage in the Abedare National Park - it does make it hard to spot animals. The lodge is so well positioned that these are the sort of choices involved...or drop over to Ol Pejeta. The staff were very friendly, and the food was excellent. I'd definitely recommend this lodge as a base to explore the places already mentioned, and the manager also made me aware that they run safaris from there over to Samburu, Lake Bogoria and Nakuru...all of which could be wrapped into a 2 or 3 day outing. The family chalet we stayed in had 2 single beds, a double bed and a large day bed/settee, and two bathrooms - very well organised. As the weather was a tad cold, the staff provided hot water bottles each night which was a nice touch. The stars were absolutely beautiful to see....worth going to Africa to catch that sight alone. If you need cash whilst there, there is an ATM in the nearby town (about 3 or 4 miles away).

Room Tip: Our family chalet was excellent (towards the back).

We only stayed one night as part of a two week tour of Kenya but would loved to have stayed longer. We had a chalet which was beautifully decorated and so warm at night (it can very cold here). If it hadn't been cloudy we would also have had a great view of Mount Kenya. The public rooms are so warm and welcoming and the food was delicious. As with everywhere we stayed in Kenya the staff were a delight. The lodge is perfectly placed between Abedares National Park and Solio Game Ranch. The only thing I would say is the chalets are quite a way from the restaurant and bar and the path to them is of a loose shale like material that isn't very stable and might result in a twisted ankle.

Room Tip: Can't comment on the tents but the chalet we had was gorgeous if a bit of a walk from the restau...

A nice place at the foot of the beautiful Aberdares with a great view and access to the great Laikipia plains with the magic Mt Kenya on the background. we stayed in this lodge for two nghts last weekend. The lodge is good, with nice rooms in the chalets and nice luxury tents, the bar area and restaurant are good, with good food, nice and friendly service, and plenty of choice in drinks. However, I didn't get excited at this place, while I have been excited at many other places in Kenya!! The place didn't do it for me. The German owner has put the entire place full with big flowers (sunflowers all over the place!!!) and bushes, not leaving any sense of space, so I felt quite claustophobic after a while. And the style of the interior in the accommodation an in the bar/restaurant was just not exciting.
All fine, if the price was good. And there's the big issue: far too expensive for what you get, IMHO. I have seen many places (hotels, lodges, camps) in Kenya and with KES25,000 pn for a 2 adults, 2 kids family this place turned out to be quite expensive without the super grandeur luxury of similar top-priced lodges. Note that while you're close, you are NOT exactly IN the Aberdares Park, neither IN the beautiful Solio Lodge. The noise highway is close. (also note that the location of the lodge on Google Maps is completely wrong. Why can't the owners/managers get this right???)

So yes, in summary, nice, well located in a beautiful surrounding, but the lodge itself didn't do it for us, with good standards, but no space, all so cramped, and overpriced. there are better value for money places in Kenya and in the area! I won't be coming again.

Room Tip: the calets (higher up) have a great view of Laikipa plains and Mt. Kenya. The tents don't.
