Kololo Game Reserve
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 22 February 2014

This was our first experience in a game reserve and it was wonderful. We stayed in the luxurious Queens cottage which was a fully equipped two bedroom house with full kitchen, two exceptional baths, great living room and extensive covered veranda with an expansive view of an edge of the Welgevonden Game reserve. The restaurant offered a nice selection of very good quality meals. From the time we parked our car until we departed, Kellyn made us feel welcome and right at home. We arrived too late for the first evening game drive so we took the mountain bikes for a 10K tour of the Kololo property where we saw a family of giraffe and a troop of baboons. The following day we had a six hour morning Welgevonden game drive with Bok and a three hour afternoon drive with Jasper. Both rangers are personable, knowledgeable, professional and genuinely interested that we enjoyed a great experience. We saw three of the big five up close as well as a variety of hoofed animals, jackals, birds, and the Klipspringer (Kololo) . This is a great place to stay and we enjoyed the ability to get out and explore the predator free Kololo reserve on foot or bike. Kololo also has a private gate just a few minutes from the lodge into the extensive Welgevonden Reserve. You can't go wrong with this laid back, accessible and friendly lodge.

Spent two nights here in January just after arriving in SA, which worked well as it's an informal and relaxed place to unwind after a long flight. Accommodation was more than adequate (the view from the veranda was spectacular) and the food (which is what I would call "home cooking") was very good. Would definitely recommend taking advantage of being able to walk or cycle round the reserve, so long as its not too hot! The game drive into Welgovenden is well worth it, with plenty of game and knowledgeable rangers. The road in isn't brilliant, but navigable with care, so don't let it put you off! Its not a super luxury up market lodge, but it doesn't pretend to be, and what they do, is done very well. And all the staff were very helpful and made us feel very welcome. Would definitely recommend it!

Lodge was very nice, clean and quiet. Staff was very friendly and helpfull. Gamedrive in Welverloren Reserve was excellent, we had Bok as ranger, he is terrific! Kololo game drive was a little disappointing for more experienced visitors. Better do this by bicycle.

If you want a slice of South African paradise, Kololo will be hard pressed to beat. From the moment we arrived we were treated like family and stress of everyday life quickly departed as we seemed to blend in with nature. Where can you find wild buck and warthogs feeding on your front lawn while you sit on the veranda, sipping on a glass of fairtrade wine and watch the sun set over the mountains.... Food was fantastic, service excellent and staff so friendly. Our rangers Bok and Jasper with their partners were very experienced and so passionate about the environment. We went on a six hour game drive with Bok which was absolutely brilliant. We saw a buffalo, elephant, two lions in the first hour followed by my beloved rhinos with babies!! We learned so much about bird species, insects and numerous plants to mention. If you like walking with Zebra, wildebeest, buck, tracking giraffe, and being at one with nature then Kololo is for you.

It was a trip of a lifetime. The food was really really good and the rooms (bungalows) were beautiful. We got to see lots of animals (zebras, elephants, giraffes, rhinoceros, buffalos and many more).. We highly recommend this place and will most definitely come back for it. And again, the food was AMAZING

My wife and I stayed 6 nights at Kololo. It was a great adventure and the most restful time as well. The staff here are very friendly and their knowledge of the local wildlife is amazing, we went out on safari everyday, some in the morning and some in the evening. Each time was a new adventure as we saw different animals or weather environments each time from the comfort of a raised open but covered vehicle which had ponchos and blankets for your added comfort. The food from the restaurant was of a very high standard and variety. It was also nice to take a ride on a mountain bike around the property at your leisure or just chill out by the pool or on the varandah of the very private hut accommodation which were very tastefully decorated, spacious, rustic but comfortable. We highly recomend this place for an amazing adventure combined with a restful stay to recharge the batteries.

Enjoyed our stay! However, the roof of "oom Piet" was leaking, water drops on the bed during the night. Some small thinks, like a sink in the bathroom emptying slowly, lampshade that was damaged. And when I wanted to take a bike in the morning, they were all gone already.
