Kololo Game Reserve

After our ordinary sedan survived the terrible 29km dirt road we were warmly welcomed at Kololo. (Rather tackle this with a 4x4).The rooms are comfortable and neat. The staff is great! The meals were good but I was disappointed that we were not offered a real South African "braai". The menu lacks imagination and needs attention to serve more traditional SA dishes with tasty (not dry) desserts. The boma should be utilized more so that visitors can admire all the stars outside. What about a nice fire in the boma in the evening where visitors can enjoy a glass of wine? The lodge dies down by 8.30pm every night so one gets plenty of rest. The quietness of the lodge and bush veld was amazing. The photo's on the website are misleading since Kololo don't have any Rhino's or Hippo's. We however saw lots of buck and giraffe. Overall enjoyed the weekend and stay at Kololo.

Thank you for you review! We usually do a braai in the weekends, but with the chilly winter months the evenings are often too cold for a braai. We will take your feedback into account and hope you enjoyed your stay

Service was great, staff always friendly and helpful, Ideal venue for our purpose (class re-union). Catering was excellent. We stayed in Giraffe and found it very comfortable with all necessary amenities.

Amazing food, great staff, magical piece of land. The Management team are incredible and no request to big or impossible. They go out of their way to do what they can. The Game and Views in the Welgevonden Park is amazing and the guide's knowledge is impressive. All in all, an absolute treat in all aspects.

The road to Kololo Game Reserve was bumpy. However, we did not regret for a minute we had to endure 29 km of this gravel road.
The house was well equipped, including full kitchen, braai area and very comfortable sitting for relaxation. Plenty of wood for the fireplace to warm up the house before going to sleep.
Another high point is the food. Everything was fresh, of good quality and well thought out (the soup after a cold trip from Johannesburg was exactly what we needed). Different choice each evening - buffet the first evening, then some wildebeest/lamb potjie and then a la carte choice from three main meals. Well presented. Breakfast was splendid as well.
The lodge is located inside the game reserve that is attached to much bigger Welgevonden Game Reserve (Big 5). Accommodation in a non big 5 game reserve has its own benefits - you can walk anywhere you want without too much risk for yourself and the plains or bush animals are not so scared of you as well (they come to your house as if domestic animals and also you can come closer to them while on a hiking trail). There is a resident leopard but we were out of luck to meet him.
Kololo offers local game drives with very knowledgeable guides daily. We have enjoyed the info provided by the guide. And then you can take a game drive to Welgevonden to see Big 5.
Overall, we had a wonderful and very relaxing, worry-free long weekend. It was worth every cent.

everything was fine, but because we were there in June it was quite cold after the sun went down. The Lodges are wonderful, but the open fire place was not enough to heat it up a little. We will come back in spring or summer.

Not only for Africa-"beginners" it is a lovely place just to stay - within the spacious landscape with the different animals and nice meals in the evening.
And the last more than 20 km can be managed also with a small car.

we carefully planned our last days in South Africa. We stayed the last days in Kololo to relax. This is really the place to relax, enjoy a walk through the fields and watch the animals. A safari in the late afternoon is realy nice. Overall a place to come back
