“Gorgeous Setting; Below Average Rooms and Service”
Reviewed 6 December 2011

My wife and I traveled with a friend this past August 2011 to Zanzibar and our first stopover was at the Z Hotel. We arrived just after Midnight on our first night in to the Z Hotel and walked into the beautiful hotel, where we were greeted by a man at the Reception Desk who had either just awakened from a deep sleep or was seriously high on drugs. Also, while the property itself is stunning, there is a beach club next door which pumped music full blast until 4 AM the evening we arrived. Not too great a start for our stay...

Having stayed in this area of Zanzibar before, we knew the beach at the Z was going to be outstanding and it certainly did not disappoint. The water in this area of the island is so blue you can't describe it and the sand is white powder. There is a nice section of reserved beach chairs and cabanas at the Z, so we took full advantage of this.

The hotel pool is also quite a stunner - infinity pool overlooking the beach and Indian Ocean, absolutely breathtaking. However, the pool towels are very rarely washed, dried and replaced. While we were amazed by the location, setting and picturesque, serene nature of the pool and surrounding property, it is this (lack of) attention to details that really stayed with us.

The food at the Z was above average and their restaurants are quite lovely. However, the service is a bit poor, as most of the staff did not understand English well and couldn't communicate very well with the largely European and American tourists staying there.

Lastly, the rooms. From the pictures on the hotel website, they look absolutely amazing and modern and spacious. However, when we arrived there was not even a duvet on the bed and the mattress was one of the most uncomfortable that I have ever slept on. We were told that we needed to request a duvet, should we like to use one and received one the following afternoon. We stayed for 5 nights and even though we requested it, our bed sheets were never changed. The rooms are also very average in size and pretty no-frills.

For a hotel that advertises itself as 4-star, we found it to really be closer to 2-star. For the price point, we really were expecting something more of our stay here. I will say that, when we brought these concerns up to the General Manager, he provided myself, my wife and our friend a complimentary massage at the Spa. This was a very nice gesture. However, we found the Spa to also be a bit lackluster.

If you find a great deal on this hotel, it is totally worth it for the surroundings alone and if you're looking for more of a party atmosphere. However, if you're looking for a serene, luxurious beach escape like we were, this is not the place for you.

Room Tip: Choose an upper level floor for a view of the beach/ocean. Garden view rooms have no view. Rooms o...

We stayed for a week after climbing Kilimanjaro and we couldnt have hoped for a better hotel. We stayed in the Sea Cottage and if it is within your budget it is something we would highly recommend. Split over two floors and your own private terrace over the clearest water you could imagine. Pool is very relaxing, restaurant is good quality (also many good nearby establishments) and the cocktail bar was our nightly hang out spot before heading to dinner. Also have to praise management for their ever presence around the resort making us feel at home.

Room Tip: Go for a sea cottage!!!

I stayed here in November 2011, I am a Pure Zanzibar agent! I am glad I did as The Z Hotel really lives up to the hype. The location in Nungwi is perfect, and after doing an inspection of the hotel discovered all the rooms are of a high standard, and the garden rooms even have nice views. I stayed in an Oceanfront Cottage, and although I stayed at some resorts on my trip costing 2 or 3 times more than the Z Hotel, this room was one of my favorites. Set over 2 floors, you get loads of room and a huge screened decking area up on stilts. With the right tide you can jump into the ocean from the balcony. The restaurant was chilled out with good food and anything you want to do on your holiday can be arranged close by. I was expecting a younger crowd, but discovered a good age range, and really the Z Hotel is for everybody, except the under 12’s of course.

The rooms arent very big. Lots of flies flying around the place. I suspect this is common to the area. The beach is super nice. Spa is exteremely expensive (compared to similar beach resorts in asia).

We're glad we picked the Z Hotel for the west coast part part of our trip to Zanzibar. We do go by TA reviews and were not disappointed. The staff are welcoming and friendly and the service excellent. The Z Hotel is located on lovely Nungwi beach and you can easily access other parts of Nungwi from the hotel - bars and restaurants within safe walking distance. The setting is sublime with gorgeous deck from which to enjoy the varied breakfast or your evening meal. We ate a couple of evenings at the Z restaurant, one of which was the African evening - a mainly barbecue/swaheli curry menu with a very fun and lively African band -we would recommend this. There is a bar area where you can get small plates/drinks but we found this to be more of a cafe atmosphere - it would have been nice to have lower lighting/candles and a bit of chillout music in the evening. On the same note the pool area where there's a lovely little bar for the daytime virtually shuts down and night and is a bit dark - again, a bit of lighting would have been nice but this is only a minor note. The pool itself is a gorgeous infinity pool where you can spend ages watching that magical Indian Ocean view. Food and drink is served all day and the service is good. The rooms were lovely with modern decor. We had a couple of occasions where we requested assistance and on both occasions our requests were met promtly and courteously. The staff are lovely, very friendly and always greeting with a smiling "jambo".
Would we return - absolutely!

Room Tip: Sea view upper floors give the best views, as does the penthouse which has the advantage of two balc...

This is a fantastic hotel above and beyond our expectations!! Me and my boyfriend stayed for 10 days in October 2011 and had the most wonderful time! Highly recommend this hotel!!
The staff are so warm and helpful and they always made sure that we had everything that we needed! As guests we felt safe, welcome and taken care of from day one.
The rooms are amazing and the food in the two restaurants so good ☺

We already dream about going back one day because of their high quality standards and the sweet feeling of being home far from home..
