My wife and I traveled with a friend this past August 2011 to Zanzibar and our first stopover was at the Z Hotel. We arrived just after Midnight on our first night in to the Z Hotel and walked into the beautiful hotel, where we were greeted by a man at the Reception Desk who had either just awakened from a deep sleep or was seriously high on drugs. Also, while the property itself is stunning, there is a beach club next door which pumped music full blast until 4 AM the evening we arrived. Not too great a start for our stay...
Having stayed in this area of Zanzibar before, we knew the beach at the Z was going to be outstanding and it certainly did not disappoint. The water in this area of the island is so blue you can't describe it and the sand is white powder. There is a nice section of reserved beach chairs and cabanas at the Z, so we took full advantage of this.
The hotel pool is also quite a stunner - infinity pool overlooking the beach and Indian Ocean, absolutely breathtaking. However, the pool towels are very rarely washed, dried and replaced. While we were amazed by the location, setting and picturesque, serene nature of the pool and surrounding property, it is this (lack of) attention to details that really stayed with us.
The food at the Z was above average and their restaurants are quite lovely. However, the service is a bit poor, as most of the staff did not understand English well and couldn't communicate very well with the largely European and American tourists staying there.
Lastly, the rooms. From the pictures on the hotel website, they look absolutely amazing and modern and spacious. However, when we arrived there was not even a duvet on the bed and the mattress was one of the most uncomfortable that I have ever slept on. We were told that we needed to request a duvet, should we like to use one and received one the following afternoon. We stayed for 5 nights and even though we requested it, our bed sheets were never changed. The rooms are also very average in size and pretty no-frills.
For a hotel that advertises itself as 4-star, we found it to really be closer to 2-star. For the price point, we really were expecting something more of our stay here. I will say that, when we brought these concerns up to the General Manager, he provided myself, my wife and our friend a complimentary massage at the Spa. This was a very nice gesture. However, we found the Spa to also be a bit lackluster.
If you find a great deal on this hotel, it is totally worth it for the surroundings alone and if you're looking for more of a party atmosphere. However, if you're looking for a serene, luxurious beach escape like we were, this is not the place for you.
