Never been that impressed before to be bothered to write reviews for hotels but this place is amazing..stayed in the z suite, from the moment we arrived it was fantastic, staff very friendly and work so hard, the place is stunning and views amazing, very clean, the absolute perfect holiday, food delicious could not fault anything, the only negative would be the overwhelming beach boys it knocked the shine off strolling down the beautiful beaches

I can safely say this has been one of the nicest hotels that I have stayed at. The room was great , incredibly comfortable beds with a wonderful bathroom. The infinity pool was a dream and the service was impeccable...not allowed to carry my own drink from the pool bar to my sunlounger as the lovely barman said I was on holiday and it was their pleasure...little things like this really stick in your mind and make your time so special.

The hotel is in a great spot in Nungwi close enough to all the action but set back enough to allow privacy.. a perfect place to relax and unwind. I have already recommended it to several of my friends and definitely intend to come back.
A special thank you to Keith and all his staff for making our trip so enjoyable

Just wanted to share a snapshot of my Boxing Day at the Z Hotel in Zanzibar – how idyllic is that?

We were on our second visit to the Z Hotel, we came last year and decided to come back for Christmas. Last time we took a garden room which was great, but this trip we decided to go for a suite, which covers the whole roof of one of the buildings and has the best view of the sunset out at sea. Perfect for watching the world go by.

The biggest area of improvement since my last visit has to be the quality of the food. The main restaurant served up some of the best food I’ve had in Africa. Other cool additions are the beach hammocks and they’ve added TV’s into the beds (bandanas) near the pool. They have an infinity swimming pool – the only one I’ve seen in Tanzania – which looks out to sea and is really relaxing with chill out music and happy hour at sunset. The staff are a real highlight at this hotel, they are so friendly and really made an effort on Christmas day, all wearing hats and big smiles.

They seem to be constantly trying to improve the hotel, which is really refreshing having stayed in so many hotels which just seem to be content with half-hearted service and accommodation.

There’s not loads to do in Nungwi so I would recommend a 4/5 day stay. Try the flying fish – it’s like an inflatable mattress you lie on which is pulled along by a speedboat – it’s arranged by the local watersports centre. I also went diving one day to a local reef called Mnemba where we saw turtles and all sorts of tropical fish.

We stayed at the Z Hotel for five nights in November 2011. As with most people staying around this area we were winding down after seven weeks of intense travel and just wanted to relax. It's a great spot, good beach, restaurants and bars along the beach if you want to move away from the hotel for a change, shops for doing some tourist shopping or buying snacks, lots of tours/diving options etc.

The hotel itself is quiet, the staff are absolutely fantastic and the facilities are excellent. There's a number of restaurants and a bar, the pool is wonderful and overlooks the beach. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and they are all wonderfully friendly and accommodating. We had a mess up with accommodation in Stone Town and ended up at Z Hotel earlier than expected and the staff took it in their stride and were amazingly helpful.

Just a helpful hint - there are no ATMs in this area. You need to drive 2 hours back to town if you want to get cash so take lots of US dollars with you or make sure you top up your cash at the airport/town bank before you transfer to this area. Most transactions occur in US dollars at the 'local' restaurants.

We stayed at the Z Hotel for 7 nights. A really fantastic stay with a few minor complaints.
I work in the Hospitality Industry and I do know the workings of a Hotel - I can say I am very impressed with the Z Hotel staff & facilities.
Everyone at the Hotel is incredibly friendly and helpful. A special thank you to Julie (Guest Relations) and John (Restaurant Manager). Julie always checked with us if everything was to our satisfaction - a very warm and loving person.
John is the greatest asset to the Z Hotel! He is full of fantastic information, and always friendly - we all looked forward to seeing John during our meal times! John makes a really big effort with all the guests - to get to know them on their stay. It was really special to me, as you do not get many people like this!
The room - a garden view room - was perfect. The air-conditioning worked very well - despite the constant electricity cuts - this is not the fault of the Hotel.
The gardens are very well maintained. The swimming pool deck was lovely - however some of the large umbrella's were broken and could not be opened. The service at the pool bar is not fantastic - I guess this does reflect the Island life - slow and relaxed. The music playlist drove us crazy - as the same music is played over & over.
Coming to a very hot destination always makes a person worry about the quality of the food. The food at the Hotel is fantastic - no food poisoning! The seafood dishes are terrific - very fresh and well prepared. A great deal of detail goes into the presentation of the food. Breakfast is lovely - the fresh fruit and pancakes are a MUST! For two evenings, when ordering the dessert of vanilla ice-cream - we got lime ice cream. Refreshing, but rather sour! This was corrected very quickly, and the vanilla ice-cream for the rest of the stay was made from real vanilla pods.
If you are planning on going on tours, take a walk to the turtle sanctuary - a 3km walk from the Hotel. Here you will be able to organise tours at reasonable rates (2 hour snorkeling & lunch at $30 Dollars each; Day tour to Spice Plantation, Jozani Forest & Butterfly Sanctuary at $40 each).
All in all, the Hotel and stay had been blissful. I would definitely recommend this Hotel to anyone going to Zanzibar.

Stayed here with 3 friends (divided into two suites) in March 2011, and it was everything we expected for the high price.

When we first arrived, we had to get over the traveler's guilt of driving through slums (literally, giant trash heaps with cows grazing on them), then arriving at a tall gate and entering this luxurious resort. It's a jolt to the system, but kind of true no matter where you stay in Zanzibar if you want to stay in a place with western standards of cleanliness/service/etc. in a place that is so very poor).

The rooms were very nice, and the ocean front suite that my buddies stayed in was AMAZING. It had a private patio with an outdoor shower to rinse off with, on stilts over the beautiful water.

There were a couple of nice restaurants and bars on the premises as well. Definitely pricey, though.

Great infinity pool overlooking the ocean. Sunsets from the beach or the pool were like nothing I'd ever seen.

The one unpleasant aspect of my stay there was an occasional smell of sewage near our room. It would get into our room through the bathroom windows which were always open. But I think this was just our room, and it wasn't that big a problem in the end.

Lastly, the service was excellent. The manager and all her staff were very attentive to our needs and eager to help.

Overall, it was a wonderful stay.

Room Tip: Basically, you get what you pay for. Higher units have better views. And the ocean front suites are...
