“A simply wonderful time!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 September 2011

we went to the Royal Zanzibar, after contemplating many other resorts. We were very pleased with everything at the Royal, the staff were polite, the food was good, the rooms were large and well maintained. It was easy to book tours with the beach boys. The bar staff were on the ball, and rarely did we wait more than 15 minutes for a snack (pizza or burger) at lunch time. When in Africa, one cannot expect 5* quality, however we were pleasantly surprised, and did not sweat the small stuff at all.

We got this hotel after our other hotel "dream of zanzibar" fell out of electricity. great reception with good english speaking staff.
Rooms are very big and clean. Bathroom is really huge. There is a bathtub so large, there will fit 4 people in it. Great open shower. Nice.
Great view from the balcony on the ocean.
Lot of swimming pools but everybody is around the main pool at the sea.
Food is ok. Same breakfast everday, but nice.
Lunch can be taken at the buffet restaurant: fresh pasta, salads, meat, fresh cooked vegtables, grill...wide assortiment. Or at the Cocobar: fresh made pizza, french fries,...
Diner is at the buffet resto: one good advice, come early because when some dishes are finished, they are finished. Like dessert. I think that they make one cake of everything and that is it. Lots of fresh fruits. 1/week african night at the amfi theatre with BBQ.
Only thing negative: lots of Italians, whole day italian music,....Ti amo, Guente di Mare, Cosa della vita,...animationteam is also italian. Staff speaks also italian.
Nice second offer to continue our holiday but would i picked it from the start....i dont think so because we came from the other side of the island (kiwengwa) and there the beach was more beautifull with palmtrees, it was more quiet, and more idealistic.

This being my second visit to Royal Zanzibar, it makes me feel like I would be visiting Zanzibar every time I take a break from Work.
The hotel staff are very friendly, excellent service and to top it all the food was excellent throughout our stay. I cant forget the seafood dinner at Samaki restaurant, It was a romantic dinner indeed!

I love the swimming pools!
The hotel is clean, I personally like to dine and stay in places where I feel my heart settles and to say the least, Royal Zanzibar makes me feel safe.

Although I had a misharp while at the airport, all was covered by the good welcome and excellent service offered at Royal Zanzibar.

Kudos to the wonderful staff. I will be seeing you soon my friends!

Regards
Kate Jacob

The rooms are really big, a double bath and a great view from the terrace, we were there at the end of the season (beginning rain season, which is 1 hour rain and then again full sunshine). The fact that there were not that many visitors due to end season did not had any effect on the service (we now had evening dinner between the big pools outside).
Belgian management is very helpfull. Service is sometimes not that pro and english is sometimes poor (but who cares).
Food is good and quality high (always fresh fish and meat on the gril , variety less. The extra menu that you can book(50 dollar) at the beach restaurant could be more refined (plus de finesse/'bit of same from buffet but served).
The swimming pools are really great (warm) and alway a view on the Ocean. For our 4 yeal old boy the pools were also great (a lot of them he could play and stand alone).
The drinks are Oke and the Bars are very nice.

Room Tip: Take a room with view on the Ocean

We have just come back from the Royal Zanzibar after spending two weeks there (and getting married while we were there).

As it was getting towards the end of the season, it wasn't particularly busy, but that was great as far as we were concerned. The site is large for the number of rooms it has which gives you the feeling of having a lot of space to yourself.

We met some fantastic people at this hotel, all of whom were very friendly, warm, attentive and who made our holiday/wedding and honeymoon truly special.

The food in the buffet restaurant was plentiful and tasty, with a huge variety of dishes to choose from. And the puddings and fresh fruit were wonderful too - I never realised that mango and pineapple could actually taste that good.

We did have a few lunches down at the Coco bar which were always lovely, well cooked, hot and well presented. We were also lucky enough to have a wedding dinner at the a la carte restaurant included in the wedding package. Alex, the chef, did an amazing job of dishing up 5 courses which were absolutely perfect. The staff had also decorated the chairs with palm leaves and flowers (and also closed the restaurant off to the other guests so that we could have a romantic meal), which we thought was a lovely touch.

It was such a great meal that we paid to have another meal on our last night, once again, the staff had decorated our table and chairs as they said that our "honeymoon wasn't over". Again, nothing was too much trouble at all.

In both the restaurants, all the staff were so friendly - spoke pretty good English, although we did do our best to speak a few words in Swahili (which I think was really appreciated).

The bar staff, again, were extremely efficient and we got to know Mohammed quite well during our stay - his smile would light up the Mapenzi Bar.

We liaised with Anderson, the front of house manager, about the details of our wedding. What a lovely guy - so laid back but incredibly efficient. We were able to choose our location, he organised the registrar, photographer, cake, flowers, witnesses etc and made sure that the area we used for our ceremony was covered in flowers. If it hadn't been for Anderson, I'm not sure what would have happened as our holiday rep didn't show any interest in us whatsoever. Not once did the company find out how things were, whether everything was going to plan for the wedding - these were the people we paid to organise it - not the hotel. So we owe a huge thanks to everyone who was involved in our wedding.

The rooms were spacious (and really handy that the plug sockets are the same as in England - we'd forgotten our adaptors!) and cleaned daily. Each evening, while we were at dinner, the staff would come and put our mosquito nets down and turn down the bed.

The gardens were suffering a bit due to the heat and lack of rain, but there were a team of gardeners who did their best with hoses to keep the grounds looking as nice as possible.

I would say that the only downside to this hotel were the amount of rude guests that were there. As previously stated, we were the only English/British people there and we were disgusted by how some people treated the staff. Some of them had no manners at all. There were a lot of lovely guests there too though.

We took time to get to know some of the staff, and would actually class some of them as friends who we'd like to keep in contact with. My husband spend a lot of time talking football with Abdallah, Anderson and Hussein - what they didn't know about English football, wasn't worth knowing! Many an evening spent discussing the "beautiful game" over a cocktail or two!!

We would recommend this hotel to others - definitely!! For us, it was the perfect place to get married, the staff were wonderful and the hotel was spot on for what we were looking for.
