“Truly beautiful place for a honeymoon!!!”
Reviewed 17 November 2013

We had a fantastic week there after 2 weeks of sarfari. Beautiful setting, lovely gardens, crystal clear beach water and numerous pools to choose from. The staff were very attentive and friendly. The all inclusive package was great. No money or sign up bills, just eat and drink as you like. We would have liked to see more traditional Tanzanian or African food but there was no shortage of western food. There were token Massai guys as hotel security which were laughable after seeing the real deal in Massai Mara. Plenty of beach boys trying to sell you gifts, snorkelling, fishing and sunset tours. All in all lovely place.

We stayed here following a weeks safari in Tanzania which was truly amazing! One of the main reasons to stay here on zanzibar was the fantastic reviews but also the response to each review from the manager who clearly is passionate about making the stay an enjoyable one. On arrival, our welcome was lovely and helpful, however our room allocation had some extra noisy neighbours! After allowing a couple of hours to see if the music subsided (it didn't) we explained our problem to reception. We were immediately offered another room and encouraged to check the room and its location before taking its allocation. I am delighted to say the room was very lovely in B block with a lovely view so we happily moved. We then discovered the shower had a problem in that the hot water didnt work, not a problem. Immediately 'a man who can' arrived with a spanner and by the time we had enjoyed our sundowners on the balcony, all was well. We couldn't fault the hotel. The staff were friendly, helpful and always happy to help despite some of the extremely rude guests they deal with!! Ali on the beach bar was great but our mention goes to Salim, entertainment. The majority of guests during our stay were Italian and the Italian entertainment crew (not employees of the hotel as I believe) were very focused on their Italian guests and less so on everyone else. Salim was friendly, informative, polite and just lovely to chat with about the hotel and zanzibar on the whole. He is just great. We did arrange a trip to stone town, prison island, spice tour and also the food market in stone town during the eve all in one day as a private trip with the guys at aquarium and although it was a long day, it was thoroughly enjoyable and a real experience and a bargain! We also would highly recommend The Rock restaurant which the hotel kindly helped us book for our wedding anniversary. Although it was a distance from the hotel the driver was great and took time out to explain and show us the villages and the rain forest. The setting for The Rock was truly blissful and picture perfect! Overall We loved our time at this resort not only because it is beautiful and the staff are so friendly and helpful but the ability to get out and about into local life is so easy, in our opinion if you ae not going to see the country you ar visiting and must veg in the hotel, them any resort or country will do! So this resort and location ticked the box for us. We were not once hassled by beach boys despite what the other reviews say, a polite no thank you is all that it takes! The food was lovely and I am a very fussy vegetarian so not easy to please and the variety and service in this resort was great, especially the different locations for dinner around the resort which was lovely and just makes things that bit different. Thank you royal zanzibar, we had a lovely time and would certainly return to zanzibar and indeed this resort at some time in the future. The only one regret we had ---- we didn't book for longer!

Room Tip: Block A looks lovely, we had block B which was quiet with a lovely view.

Thank you so much for your wonderful and very detailed review of Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort!

I'm honoured that my responses helped you make the choice to stay with us and even more so that you would want to return. I'm very proud of the team we have that are busy ensuring you have a great time and I'll be sure to share your comments with them, in particular with Ali, Salim and our "man who can" with the spanner!

I will also share your comments with Chef. I know that he and his team work hard to provide good food and a wide variety and it's nice to hear, particularly from vegetarians or other guests with specific dietary needs, that we're getting it right.

Thank you once again for choosing Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort, we hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back in the near future!

Just had a great week on safari in amazing, authentic hotels with great staff - now arrived in the blackpool of Tanzania! Plastic Massai, hawkers, cheesy butlins style staff - and now sat here at 2am waiting for the disco to stop!

They said it would stop at midnight, I asked at 1am - they said it would stop at midnight. I asked at 2am, they said it would stop at midnight? I asked what they meant - they then clarified midnight means am? Maybe get some sleep at 3am?

p.s. the evening meal was poor.

Maybe blackpool will feel more exotic and classy?

what a dump!

Dear Paul,

Thank you for taking the time to post your review of the Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort.

We read with great dismay of your disappointment in our hotel. I am sorry that you were disturbed, particularly at such a late hour. I wish that there was something I could do, but the disco is actually a local nightclub that is about half a kilometer from the resort. Fortunately most of our guests sleep through the music as it is quite dispersed by the time it gets to us, but I'm sincerely sorry that that was not the case for you. I would also like to apologize for the confusion with the time. Zanzibari's are not good with time and in local vernacular, midnight is any time from the middle of the night until the early hours of the morning. I have spoken with our night team and asked them to steer clear of using such terms with our guests, but as this is what they have grown up with, change is sometimes difficult.

As much as I sympathize with your frustration with being unable to sleep, I am disappointed in the terms that you used to describe the resort and the staff. As you can see from hundreds of other reviews, most people find the property beautiful and the staff genuinely warm and friendly. I believe that the terms "cheesy" and "a dump" are both untrue and unfair and I can only trust that potential guests reading your review will acknowledge it as an anomaly, perhaps driven by your mood at the time.

We stayed here for our honeymoon, fantastic location, very well maintained gardens. The pools are lovely, the majority of the time they were empty. Lots of sunbeds in various areas, so no need to worry about getting a good spot. The staff are very attentive and friendly, the rooms are fabulous very spacious and comfortable, kept spotless by Fatma our maid. The food is very nice, good selections and quality products. Thanks to Robert , Christopher and Aisha for making our dinner on the beach so special. Thanks to Batuly for being so lovely. The entire staff work hard to make sure you enjoy your holiday.A good home reef,
great beach. We would definetly recommend this resort and we will return.

We're very glad that you enjoyed the resort, I think it's beautiful, but it could be said that I'm a little biased! There is no bias involved however with our staff, I'm very proud of each of them and it's always a thrill to be able to thank them for their hard work by sharing kind words from our guests. Beautiful hotel, helpful and friendly staff. We celebrated our anniversary with the private lobster dinner on the beach which was $200 extra but totally worth it. The place was clean and staff was super quick to respond when we had an issue (our room safe broke and they fixed it quickly). The lunch and dinner menu changed regularly during the week so you didn't get board with the food. Also they had lots of activities and special event nights. Highly recommend!

This is a lovely hotel in a great location for relaxing and enjoying the beach, pool and water sports. It s a bit of a trek from Stonetown so we only visited there once. The staff are extremely helpful and service is excellent. We were three friends travelling together so had booked two rooms one with twin double beds. When we arrived both rooms had only one bed. They offered to put another bed in the room but to be honest that would have spoilt the luxury of the room so eventually the hotel came up with the right room although it did take some cajoling and we did feel the need to stand our ground! However we did get the correct room layout in the end so all was well! Housekeeping was superb with fresh flowers on the beds each evening. Food in all the restaurants was good especially breakfast. All in all a good all inclusive hotel resort with excellent facilities! I would revisit!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with beach view

Thank you so much for taking the time to post your wonderful review of the Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort.

We're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your stay so much and will happily share your kind remarks regarding the service, food and facilities with the team.

I was sorry to hear that there had been an incorrect assignment for one of your rooms and asked our Front Office Manager to investigate. Unfortunately the booking was made for a single and a double. In this particular online booking system, the two beds have to be requested in the comment box. Although that helped me to understand the initial problem, I was nonetheless disappointed to hear that the room wasn't immediately switched when the problem was brought to the attention of Reception. We have discussed this with the team and I trust that it will be better managed in the future. I hope that you will accept my sincere apologies for putting you in a situation that required you to stand your ground when you should already have been relaxing.

We enjoyed our 12 day holiday at the Royal Zanzibar Resort which is set in a stunning location overlooking well maintained gardens, beautiful sandy beach, turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean and the most amazing sunsets each evening. We were pampered and well looked after by very friendly and attentive staff throughout our stay and nothing was ever any trouble. Jambo was the word of the day everyday by all the staff. The bedroom and bathroom are very spacious with cleanliness and maintenance in all area being evident throughout the complex. The food in the restaurants was good quality and good choices. It was a really pleasant change that dinner was served in various venues on alternative evenings and the staff should be congratulated in their efforts and professionalism. We found the General Manager Kim to be very approachable and friendly and she always made every effort to ensure that all was well with the guests. Visiting some of Zanzibar attractions are a must: Stone Town, Prison Island to see the giant tortoises, Spice Market which is a must and Jozani Forest to see the monkeys which were all interesting. You can completely spoil yourself here as this hotel it has been an oasis for us to relax away from the demands of our busy lifestyle and we were really relaxed and well rested by the time we left.
Nothing was too much trouble....Top marks Kim for a wonderful relaxing and peaceful holiday. We hope to return someday!
