“Lovely hotel”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

My husband, teenage son and I have just spent 4 days at the Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort.Travelling on South African passports, we did not need visas, nor did we have to pay the arrival and departure taxes. The airport is old, with no conveyor belt system for luggage, so collecting cases is a bit of a scrum, with everyone pushing and shoving to spot their luggage! Our transfer went without a hitch, our driver being very Informative, though as another reviewer has said, the poverty is quite an eye opener.
The hotel sits behind big gates with Masai security, it really is like entering another world. The large, open reception looks down over the gardens, pools, room complexes and the sea.We stayed in A block, right on the beach. The rooms were large and clean, decent bathrooms with huge baths! We loved to sit outside on the veranda in the morning with our coffee.
The pools were wonderful, no need to be up early to book sunloungers as there were always plenty available. The staff are brilliant, unfair to single anyone out, as they were all good, jewel in the crown actually. The food was fine, even my picky son was happy, so mission accomplished! We did enjoy the dinners at the beach and around the pool. We also did the Lobster dinner, outside of the all inclusive, at USD 60 pp. Our son decided to stick to pizza!
What can I say about the beach boys, well, they are a Zanzibar fixture. We found a polite but firm No was usually enough to deter them. At the end of the day, they are only trying to earn a living. If it really annoys you, avoid the beach!
The hotel operates a cashless system, so anything bought outside of the all inclusive or gift shop goes on account until checkout. Tips can be placed in a secure box outside the cashiers office, which then get shared amongst the junior staff members.
We were only there 4 days, and it rained for one day, so wish we could have had longer! It really is a lovely, relaxing resort. Thank you to everyone for making our stay so enjoyable.

Room Tip: Block A for stunning sea views.

Thank you for taking the time to post your very kind review of Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort, it's so wonderful to hear that you would have liked to stay longer!

We were delighted to hear that you enjoyed our pools, our large rooms and the beautiful views and I love knowing that I can share another positive review with our friendly staff! I'm so proud of all of them and they love hearing that guests enjoyed their stay. Outside of all of that, one of my favourite things is knowing that our guests were able to relax. That's not always easy to do in today's world and we take pleasure it providing just the right atmosphere for everyone to find some peace and quiet for the time they're with us.

Thank you once again for choosing Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort for your stay in Nungwi. We hope that we will have the chance to welcome you back again, perhaps for a little longer this time!

We stayed a week at the Royal Zanzibar following a safari in Kenya. The transfer from the airport is a little harrowing if you are not used to seeing abject poverty and it left me feeling a bit guilty entering this lavish hotel.

The staff are wonderful and greet everyone with the ubiquitous 'Jambo' which is very endearing to begin with but becomes less so as the holiday draws on.

The hotel rooms are large and clean and the free WiFi works well across the whole complex. The food is OK but there were no a la carte options during our stay which significantly limited choice.

The facilities are fine and the evening entertainment broadly above average.

The hoteL is in an exotic location but really follows the standard all inclusive format you could find anywhere in the world and does not really justify its premium price compared with what you might expect in say Egypt or Turkey.

A pleasant stay but I would not rush back.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post your review of Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort.

We appreciate your kind remarks regarding our rooms, facilities and evening entertainment. We'll be sure to share them with the team.

I am sorry that we didn't have an a la carte option when you were here, unfortunately the restaurant was destroyed in a storm and we have only just finished rebuilding the structure. We tried a couple of different things to improve that situation, but without a working kitchen, they couldn't be done as well as we needed them to be to exceed our guest's expectations.

I was also sorry to hear that you felt a bit guilty coming to the resort after seeing the poverty on the island. I know that the very visible poverty comes as a shock for some of our guests, but would like to take the opportunity to point out that tourism is making a dramatic impact for many of the native Zanzibari's. With approximately 15,000 directly employed in tourism and another 60,000 to 70,000 indirectly employed (suppliers, fishermen, farmers that supply to resorts and hotels) the impact on the million or so people that call Zanzibar home is massive. As long as you are as respectful of the efforts of the staff as you would be anywhere else, they welcome the opportunity to ensure you enjoy your stay and are well aware that without guests, they would most likely be unemployed. Your presence here has a much more positive impact on the poverty than almost anything else you can do.

Thank you once again for choosing Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort for your stay in Nungwi. Should you change your mind about returning to Zanzibar, I hope that you will contact me directly. Once our a la carte restaurant is in full service again, I like to think that we would be able to offer you a little better than the fairly typical experience you had on this visit.

We spent 4 nights at this wonderful resort and had the best time. We were looking for a restful and quiet place to stay and we found our jewel in Nungwy. Of course this is not a full 5 stars but the general ambiance and comfort you get from the open air reception to the edge of the white sand pristine beach are totally worth.
Our room was really really spacious, basic enough to disconnect from the modern world and feel on holidays as soon as you arrive. The amenities of the resort are varied and generally good: the spa is relatively basic but ideally located, the multiple pools within the gardens are just amazing and the "near-the-beach" sunbathing area is just perfect.
The All inclusive package is really worth: no need to worry for any drink or food during the whole stay. Food was generally good, specially during the African night, entertainment was varied and nice...they really try very hard to keep you interested from early morning to late night throughout your stay.
We were amazed by the variety of people choosing the hotel (group, full families, couples...) all blending well and enjoying.
Aside from the stunning location and the proximity of a real nice white sand beach, the real jewel of this hotel is the Staff: always smiling, very attentive, dynamic, friendly, helpful...they just made our stay unforgettable: Margareth, Martha and Salim have just stood out from an amazing team that makes this resort so outstanding and worth the trip.
We would definitely stay there again while going back to Zanzibar.

Room Tip: Get a room with Garden with on the first floor to overlook at the nice garden and pools...block J an...

Thank you so much for your terrific review of Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort!

We like to think of ourselves as both restful and quiet and we're so glad that you enjoyed that ambiance. It's not always easy to find a place where you can do both in today's busy world and we do everything we can to make that an option when you stay with us.

We also noted with a great deal of pride, your reference to our staff as the real jewel of the property. We will of course share your remarks with Margareth, Salim and Martha and the entire team. They take such pleasure in ensuring our guests have a great time and we like to think that they're a big part of the reason such diverse cultures, groups, ages and nationalities can simply enjoy being together and have a great time.

Thank you once again for choosing Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort for your stay in Nungwi, we look forward to welcoming you on your return!

After a tiring week on Safari, we spent 10 days in this wonderful resort in Zanzibar. It was the perfect place to relax and unwind after the hectic schedule the week before. Its difficult to know where to start with the gushing praise! The rooms were huge, clean and bright with the most wonderful views of the beach/sea. The food was excellent (the fresh pasta made by the Italian chef was great), buffet style with plenty of choice and new dishes every day. The fresh tuna was sublime! Our eldest daughter is vegetarian and there was plenty for her too. Every night there was some sort of entertainment - The band at the beach barbeque were amazing as werte the Maasai dancers. The pools and gardens were beautiful, and never felt crowded. In fact we often had a pool to ourselves. The beach was straight out of a brochure - palm-fringed azure sea and white sand. The beach touts were a bit annoying but generally good humoured and if you are polite they eventually leave you alone. (apart from one lady who was trying to persuade my daughters to get henna tattoos, who starting ranting about how they would have them if she wasn't black and would they like her to go into the sea and wash her skin colour off!! Hmm, deranged!). The best bit of all, however, was the staff, every single last one of them. They were fantastic, always friendly, helpful, and interested. They made what was always going to be a great holiday into an outstanding one. Bravo!!!

Now for the not so good bits. We were very disappointed with the island, especially Stone Town which was eagerly anticipated but a huge letdown. It was VERY dirty, with little outstanding architecture that we could see. The tour we went on (Fishermans Tours) focused on the tourist traps too, for example, spending great periods of time in the gift shops. Our visit to Freddy Mercury's house was so fleeting that we didn't even get time to read the plaque on the outside, and the fascinating if somewhat delapidated museum was so rushed we had to google it later when back at the hotel to find out more information. The spice tour was well worth the effort, but we would have given the Jozani Forest a miss! Not a bird or creature in sight. The monkeys were to be found on a rubbish tip by the side of a main road, surrounded by tourists.
By far the best tour we did was the full day Safari Blue. Rather a lot of people to start with but we soon went off in Dhows in groups of 15 or so. The snorkelling was great and the beach barbeque good. We sailed back which was a treat and saw several pods of dolphins. Be aware (we weren't!) that if the tide is out in the morning, you need to wade out about 500m to the boats. Sand shoes would have been a good idea and wear your swimmers as we were eventually up to our waists in water. Wet knickers all round!!

Hotel 5, Island 0.

Room Tip: Block A is right next to the beach.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post your fantastic review and lovely photo of Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort!

We absolutely never tire of hearing that our staff have made a difference to our guests stay and delight in sharing reviews like this with all of them. We're also happy to hear that you enjoyed the food and entertainment offerings, the Big Five Band is a particular favourite with our guests and the Masai Dancing... that's just so much fun to watch... or were you one of the guests who got up to try out monumental leaping without a run up??

I was sorry to hear about the lady on the beach and your tour to Stone Town and Jozani Forest. We'll share these remarks with Fisherman's Tours and ask them to ensure a better experience for our guests who take these outings. That said, Safari Blue is ever popular and we're glad that you enjoyed it so much!

Thank you once again for choosing Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort for your stay in Nungwi. We hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back again in the future.

Dear Amar,

Thank you for your lovely review and kind recommendation for Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort!

We're so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and will happily share your kind remarks with our team, particularly Mr. Robert!

I was sorry to hear that you were not directed to our Kid's Club. We do have one, we have a program, staff and a place, unfortunately what we often lack is kid's to participate. We will look at the check in process to ensure that parents travelling with children of an appropriate age are properly directed.

We've also taken note of your comment regarding our vegetarian offerings and will continue to work on expanding the repertoire, as we do all of the food choices.

Thank you once again for choosing Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort for your stay in Nungwi, we look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

We have just spent a week in this lovely resort. The staff and hotel were wonderful and the trips we took to the snorkling spots with Captain Marko Polo who sells from the beach with his boat Tata were the best and cheapest by far. Entertainment at the hotel was excellent a different theme every night

Thank you so much for taking the time to post your very kind review of Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort!

We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay and will be sure to share your kind remarks with our team.

We're also glad to hear that you enjoyed your excursions with the beach boys. We avoid recommending them as we remain concerned about their safety measures and practices and their insurance coverage. It's true that they are less expensive than officially operated companies, but those companies comply with strict safety and insurance regulations that allow us to feel secure in sending our guests out with them.

Thank you once again for choosing Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort for your stay in Nungwi. We hope that we will soon have the opportunity to welcome you back!
