It was a real joy and a privilege, from the very first moment to last, to luxuriate in a five-night stay at the Zanzibari. Our stay there in September 2012 had formed part of a longer inland and coastal safari trip to Tanzania, all organised by the super-efficient Tent with a View company (check them out). So, following our fun-filled four-wheel and waterborne exploits on the mainland, we had treated ourselves to a few nights R&R at this oasis of tranquility in Nungwi, Zanzibar. Paradise lost?. I think not...for you'll find it right here. The hotel (and the term barely does it justice) is situated in expansive and exquisitely maintained surroundings with steps leading down to a long stretch of brochure beach to die for. Amidst the nooks and crannies, you'll find hammocks and loungers aplenty - whether in sunshine or in shade. Absolutely no need therefore for the dawn draping of towels for - here's the thing - the Zanzibari comprises only eight rooms and four private suites which give a real and genuine sense of space and relaxation. It is managed and run with great care and attention to detail by Paul and Mrisho to whom nothing was the slightest trouble. The whole place manages to sidestep any stiffness or formality and has a great feel to it - akin perhaps to a house party, as the small number of guests get to know each other and share their stories of the day - including with the staff, who seem uniformly hand-picked for friendliness and efficiency.~ Room service is organised, seemingly invisibly, by Rose and her team. The bedrooms are spacious, spotless, very very well appointed and afford simply glorious views of the Indian Ocean. ~ The cuisine was a revelation. Dinner comprised ever-changing five-course delights and were all prepared to a standard rivaling, I'd bet, your own favourite restaurant. And, finally, a great place from which to take in, for those so inclined, an unmissable snorkelling or diving day at sea. There's a song which says: "There's no sadness in leaving if you leave for a reason....and the best of all reasons is to come back again". We'd love to think so. Thank you so very much to all concerned. - Bob & Maggie Wood - Surrey - UK.

Room Tip: The two-storey Bougainvillea House comprises the eight bedrooms. Rooms on the upper floor arguably a...

My brother, sister-in-law and I spent an amazing weekend at the Zanzibari in September. We were really looking forward to relaxing, but given that we had only a short time on the island, I also wanted to make sure that we were able to fit in a few key activities. Thanks to Paul (the general manager) and his staff, we got everything we wanted!

Compared to its monstrous neighbor down the road, the Zanzibari is set back from the road and seems far more unassuming. In fact, pulling up we were almost a little worried that we had made the wrong decision, but from the moment the Maasai guards greeted us at the gates, we knew we were in for something special.

The grounds are absolutely beautiful. The color of the flowers is vibrant against the backdrop of the turquoise water, and looking beyond the raised beach you can sense the unfiltered ruggedness that makes Zanzibar truly unique.

We stayed in the Frangipani villa and after a perfect day of relaxing in our private pool we wandered over to the common area for dinner. I’ve stayed at a fair share of resorts, and I admittedly do not expect much from the food, but I was really impressed with our meals. The food was delicious and the service was the icing on the cake.

The vibe here is super RELAXED and the staff could not have made our experience any more special. From the moment we arrived, every aspect of the trip was handled for us – a car was waiting at the airport and drinks were waiting at reception. Paul arranged for us to tour Stone Town and to visit a local spice farm, where we met the charismatic Mr. Butterfly who sang Jambo Bwana while scaling an 80+ foot coconut tree with nothing but some rope tied around his feet. I cannot recommend this enough!!

On Saturday night, we were looking for a party and the hotel arranged for a taxi to take us on a short ride through the maze of bumpy, dusty roads that led to Kendwa beach. It was an experience to remember – cool shows, great music and lots of dancing. Kendwa was good fun but it’s definitely a little more touristy, and in my opinion, it lacked the charm of Nungwi beach where the Zanzibari is located.

During breakfast on our last day, the waiter unabashedly exclaimed “we love you,” and I believed him :) They do love their guests, they take a personal interest in ensuring you have everything you need to have an amazing time, and trust me, you will.

With family coming to visit I had to get things in order quickly. We had decided on Thursday to take a trip to Zanzibar on Saturday. Searching online found Zanzibari and called over. Paul set us up with a room and organized all of our outings (Spice Tour and Stone Town Tour) in no time flat. I was extremely impressed with the speed he was able to get all of this done. The staff that Paul has assembled were amazingly friendly and went out of their way to make sure you had everything that was requested. A member of the staff actually ran into town on his break to get us items that weren't readily available on the grounds. The hotel is situated on a beautiful stretch of quiet beach. Swimming in the ocean can be done when the tide is and is recommended. The pool is wonderful and overlooks the ocean. Also, a great place to lounge after enjoying some of the excellent food available in the restaurant. I highly recommend The Zanzibari to anyone that is looking for a quiet getaway. If you are looking to go out rides to Kwenda Rocks are organized by staff and is just a short ride. I do believe that I will be headed back there in the near future.

Small and beautiful hotel. Very, very nice and helpful staff, excellent food. Swmming in the ocean is possible during high tide while a highly recommended beach walk to Nungwi is nice during low tide and takes approx 15 minutes.
Snorkeling and dive excursions can be booked at the hotel next door. We can higly recommend this place to people who are looking for a relaxing time and excellent service/food.
