despite the lack of power on zanzibar, nungwi is still worth a visit and this property is nicely positioned in a quiet area. We were originally scred off of nungwi because we had heard it is crowded with tourists but the Zanzibari is located away from all that. Private and relaxing this is the perfect end to an African adventure, and definitely a nice contrast to Stonetown. Eugene is doing a heck of a job of managing and will deal with any concerns. Also the food was great!

My wife and I had stayed for a relaxing week over Christmas and New Year. The aim was to chill-out and recharge our batteries and the Zanzibari certainly delivered. There is a negative review which mentions building noise but although there was building going on next door it wasn't noisy whilst we were there. it even added to the experience as the builders were often singing African songs whilst precarioulsy perched on the new roof !

There are only 8 rooms at the moment but it sounds like there are plans to expand. The rooms were spacious, comfortable and well decorated as the hotel was refurbished in mid 2009. Each has a balcony with sea views. The bed was enormous.

The communal bar and restaurant area has been renovated with character and style. The bar is an old Dhow (boat) and a lovely feature in the middle of the bar/dining area. All the furniture has been made on the premises from what looks like drift wood.

The gardens are pleasant and lead down to the beach. they are well designed with pairs of seats and shade dotted around so you can relax in a spot of you choosing. The beach isn't picture perfect but has lots of rock pools and you can take the 30-40 minute walk (actually wade) to the coral reef. There are lovely starfish in the water as you get away from the shore and some fish. You do have to be careful of sea urchins but this wasn't a major issue.

The food was great, with a choce of 2 options for each course, as you might expect there is a seafood option virtually every day. You can also buy lunch for roughly $10 per person.

They have internet access for $5, I used it for 5 minutes and they didn't charge.

The owner (Ronnie) was very accommodating and helpful. One day when I had sunburn he just said "you need factor 50" and passed over a tube for me to use for a few days.

This is Africa so you need to be aware that the laid back style of the hotel also applies to the service. This was fine with us but you shouldn't got expecting to click your fingers and get a drink. You also need to double check the end of day bar bill as they seemed to inadvertently overcharge us on several occasions. there was never a quibble when we queried it though and they always took our word.

It is a 30 minute walk to the local village with bars etc but to be honest we enjoyed the Zanzibari so much we only left once for a snorkelling trip. The snorkeling on the trip was very good but it was incredibly badly organised. The barbeque on the beach was a fish with some rice in no shade and everyone was way too hot. My advice would be to try and get a fast boat to go snorkelling and avoid the BBQ side of things unless they use a different company (I think they used Sea Brothers or something similar).

The small size makes everyone very friendly and you soon get to know your fellow guests, we liked this aspect as everyone was very pleasant. i see some have also left reviews.

Overall a nice laid back place with good food, no hassle, a nice pool and lovely grounds.
