“Hilton TIA”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 April 2011

Good Hotel and rooms, nice facilities and a fair price. Only stayed two nights and I think the food was very good. The service is kind of slow and not really interested in you - well something I got used to after some weeks in Africa and some stays in mediocre to luxury properties.
If you expect more than an average Hilton experience you could be dissapointed...
Well at the end....TIA - This Is Africa.
Still a recommendation from my side.

We stayed for 3 nights at the Double Tree Hilton. The rooms are big and clean and the hotel staffs are extremely friendly. The beach around this hotel is white and clean and the water is turqouise blue! There are lots of coral formations and it is so beautiful. The hotel is 5 minutes away from the village and we would go there everyday to see the local people who were very nice. We took lots of books and pencils to give to the African kids.

The Manager in charge of the restaurant, Stanley Morris is very friendly and would let the chef cook special meals for us if we requested. The hotel keeps a barbeque and buffet Swahilli dinner once a week right on the beach in the evenings and a Masai dance show! The manager at the reception, Rashid would give us freshly baked hot gourmet chocolate chip cookies every morning!

Although, the hotel is an hour away from the airport and Stonetown, we managed to get a driver who took us around the Island at a very reasonal rate. If you need the name of this person, please email me.

I would definately go back to Zanzibar and stay at Double Tree Hilton.

A nice hotel to say in for a cuople of days - if you plan to say longer, you might get bored with a lack of activities to do.

Rooms: of hilton quality - great comfy beds; washrooms could use a bit of an upgrade; very clean; great selection of channels (according to znz standard anyways)

Restaurants: 4/5 times was great. Wish they were a bit more experimental in their food selection though.

Pool: really nice - especially liked the swim up snack bar

location: probably the weakest point - along the stretch of the beach, hilton got stuck with the area which is not as great as others. nevertheless, the water is still quite nice when the tide is high. there are some nice restaurants nearby as well.

A break in Zanzibar is de rigueur after a hot and dusty wildlife safari. Our Tanzanian friends chose the Doubletree Hilton to the north of the island. It is a newly franchised property that has will have an uphill task establishing itself in an over-hoteled island like Zanzibar.

The resort is well spread out at the extreme northern tip of the island. It takes about 2 hours by road from Zanzibar International airport. The last mile through Nungwi village is very bumpy with rainwater-filled potholes. There's complete absence of tarred road.

The sea views from the resort are breathtaking - so many shades of blue and green with the occasional dhows gently gliding by. You can swim or walk along the coastline to the village on either side.

The room is well appointed, large and comfortable with a balcony. The surroundings are quiet with almost all rooms having a sea view. There is a large pool and bar in the centre. There is a beach restaurant and bar which is very relaxing. Breakfast is served in a large open restaurant. Service is overall very good, efficient and courteous staff.

There's not much to do at the resort. You can relax by the pool or the beach (there are sunbeds) or play board games or table-tennis. Or you could hire a speedboat for a snorkelling trip for which the hotel charges exorbitantly.

The resort is a good place to relax and unwind but isn't good value for money for the distance, the price and the lack of recreational activities.

I read some reviews of this resort on Trip Advisor before going there, I was a little worried because some people had a slew of complaints. I don't usually write reviews of hotels, but felt that the negative reviews I read were unwarranted and wanted to let those considering this hotel know that they have nothing to worry about. Great airport pickup, a little more expensive than a taxi, but well worth it (a nice big comfy vehicle, a great driver who gave lots of info about Zanzibar along the drive). Arrived at the hotel to be welcomed with warm chocolate cookies, swiftly taken to my room which was really fantastic, especially very clean, and included a fly mosquito net which really wasn't needed. The restaurants (poolside and main) were also good, and served complimentary pineapple and watermelon on the beach during the day. The staff was helpful and friendly, the pool clean, the fitness centre had everything you'd need to get a good workout and the beach/view were amazing! All in all, one of my favorite places to stay!

We stayed 3 nights.
The room - spacious & cozy, good air-conditioning, but the shower in our room was not working well. Requested the staff to fix it but no improvement.

Food - Acceptable. We had our dinner at the hotel restaurant for 3 nights. We had lunch at a restaurant near to the hotel and found the food not as good as the hotel.

Service - We won't say it's poor but a bit disappointed. e.g., 1) waited 15mins for a bill at the restaurant. They said they have forgotten even we have requested for a few times. 2) No pen at the reception (sounds ridiculous!!) when we signed the bill upon check-out and have to wait for a few minutes for them to find a pen. Sounds ridic 3) One night, when we went back to our room after dinner, we found that our room was locked by the swing bar inside. "Someone broke in?" we thought. We asked the reception to help. They just told us casually that they would send a man to open it. Finally, we waited 30mins for "the man" to come and break the swing bar. The reception staff told us it sometimes happens...... And that night we slept without the swing bar security lock.

Diving - the diving counter at the hotel is run by Zanzibar Water Sports. It's better to choose other diving shop. We joined a one-day diving trip and it's the worst diving experience I ever had. Small boat and unprofessional diving masters.

We arrived at 3PM and had to wait two hours to have our room ready.
The room looked nice except for the floor which was cement painted in red oil paint, like the paint you use for garage floors! Plus we couldn't walk barefoot on it because the paint which is probably old is coming off and sticks to your feet!! You expect Hilton to have tiles, carpet or wood floors!
The toilet flush tank had a leak, the plumber eventually came after quite some fussing and yelling, he spent over half an hour on it...and a couple hours later it started leaking again!! There was no hot water in the shower, so we had to wash only in the tub.
Service is terrible, the first day the maid didn't clean the tub she just sprayed some water and out, she forgot to put new towels and shampoo/soap.
When we asked for anti-mosquito spray it took them over an our to bring it and reception simply refused to send someone to a pharmacy to buy some anti-malaria pills, another hotel guest helped us with a couple tablets.
I must say the breakfast buffet is excellent, but dinner is not tasty at all, we ate out every night.
Altogether we are extrmely disappointed, we trusted the name "HILTON" upon booking and soon realized this hotel is far from Hilton standards
