DoubleTree by Hilton Resort Zanzibar - Nungwi

Reviewed 16 June 2011

We stayed here for some rest and relaxation after climbing Kilimanjaro and we had 6 nights here. We were given a lovely room and it was low season so there weren't many people around. The facilities here were really good and you have access to a private section of the beach.
The hotel was manned by 2 security guards at all times along the beach and another 2 at the gate. Nungwi is a lovely part of the island and there are lots of water activities to do. We dived for a day and went parasailing, all within walking distance of the hotel. There are also quite a few food options close by - just walk along the beach, and the food at the hotel is also quite good and reasonably priced.

The hotel is about 90 mins from the airport and stone town and it cost $50 for transfer to the hotel. We spent half a day in Stone town and this was enough for us.

A lovely hotel if you want to sit around to relax and do nothing! (and the pool bar is great too!)

Room Tip: Just mention what occasion it is.

My wife and I for a month traveled around southern/eastern Africa with some friends. Midway, we found ourselves in Nungwi and decided to getaway just the two of us. We popped in and pricelined a room for about $100 cheaper than the going rate and had a blast. The room was BEAUTIFUL with a view of the pool and the ocean. The beach was gorgeous; the water was glass. The food at the doubletree was incredibly well done and surprisingly, not overpriced.

We'd definitely consider going again.

As a frequent business traveller (about 200 nights pa) and a twice yearly visitor to Zanzibar, this was my first visit to Doubletree. I have friends in Nungwi otherwise I wouldn't have stayed there - based on the Hilton Dar, anywhere would be better. However with Zamani being sold and Breezes too much of a honeymoon destination, I took the plunge. What a suprise. Check in was painless, welcomed by name, really very good staff and an attentive concierge. The room was pre air conned, a card had been left in the power slot to cool it down (welcome touch!), was very comfortable, spacious and everything worked. The shower and complimentaries were all good quality and the beach view was a wow.
As a solo traveller, dinners can be a bit hit and miss - you end up either parked away in a corner or right next to the kitchen. Not here, the waiter gave a good choice of tables, the food was quick and very well prepared, the wine service was very good and the white was cold.
Breakfast was a bit limited (no yoghurt and limited fruit) but everything was freash and the coffee makes up for it!
I had a days fishing with some friends and bought back some wahoo and dorado. The restaurant prepared it exactly as instructed, on time and with plenty to spare. This is very rare to achieve in Africa as some normally goes astray in the kithcen - well done F&B!
In short - one of my best stays with excellent service. I will return.
For the suggestions: yoghurt and fruit salad for breakfast. Spray / fog the place every second evening (bugs can get out of hand, check Hilton Mauritius for how to do it), and get some Jameson's for the bar. Otherwise well done!

Room Tip: Book a beach view room 1st floor.

We had a great stay at the doubletree after climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. We have no complaints. We received excellent service from the staff. It was a very relaxing atmosphere. We always felt safe and didn't have any issues on the beach as some other reviewers have noted. We set up a scuba diving session at the hotel and the car transfer was included. The sunsets were beautiful and the weather was great. We are looking forward to going back.

The welcome was friendly and we found all the staff attentive and helpful. The room had a stunning view over the white beach and blue sea. There were a lot of Italians in the hotel and the food had an italian feel to it - for us excellent.

The hotel is situated in a working fishing village, so the hotel is not ideal for those who wish to be insulated from local people. Walking along the beach at sunset, we were surrounded by local kids playing football, fishermen working on their nets and boats and women beating the .... out of squids on the sand to soften the meat. Nungwi is pretty remote and still has a slightly hippy backpacker feel to it.

We had read some warnings about the beach being unsafe, but we didnt feel any sense of threat at all and were comfortable even when we were the only tourists in sight - although we didnt wear expensive watches/jewellery etc. There were the usual people on the beach trying to sell us boat trips, artwork and carvings etc but they left us alone after a single "no" with a smile. It was interesting to wander through the village and talk to and see the reality of life for the locals.

The downsides are the sea which almost covers the beach at high tide. I'm a fairly strong swimmer and was comfortable swimming off shore at high tide and out to the fishing boats but you would keep younger kids out of the sea and in the hotel pool (which was quite nice). There were only just enough sun loungers on the beach area of the hotel to go around, and as in most places there were some sociopathic early morning "baggers" who reserved loungers which they then only used for a short time each day.

The hotel organised tour was quite interesting (stone town, prison island and the slave caves - we did this all in one day) and we hired a local taxi to go into stone town for another trip without tour guides. Otherwise we did some long walks (at low tide) up and down the beach.

Overall though we had a relaxing stay. We went for a mid-winter one week break to escape busy UK jobs and this did the trick. The hotel is good value, and the management have done well to create a comfortable ambience in such a remote spot.

The hotel is right next to the beach and has superior amenities. The rooms are tastefully designed and furnished and the beds are pretty comfortable. The food variety at breakfast could do with some more however the dinner is pretty good. The staff are pretty friendly and helpful. I'd recommend sampling some of the other restaurants for lunch/dinner along the beach. A word of caution, the trip from the Zanzibar airport to the hotel is about an hour and a half and could cost you between $50 and $60 dollars. Would definitely stay there again1

Good Hotel and rooms, nice facilities and a fair price. Only stayed two nights and I think the food was very good. The service is kind of slow and not really interested in you - well something I got used to after some weeks in Africa and some stays in mediocre to luxury properties.
If you expect more than an average Hilton experience you could be dissapointed...
Well at the end....TIA - This Is Africa.
Still a recommendation from my side.
