We stayed at the Flame Tree Cottages for four nights and enjoyed it very much. We were a family of four and had lots of space and quiet and wonderfully cool AC. We enjoyed our breakfast in the restaurant, so we could order what we would like, it was fresh and good and we ordered dinner in advance, so there was no wait, and dinner was also very nice. The beach is great at the end of the lovely garden, with private sun beds and a very nice beach bar close by. The owners were very friendly and organized a great snorkling trip for us with a lovely day to Mnemba. We would definitely recommend this hotel.

We had a cottage which was nice. Kitchen was not so clean.

Staff were cold. We had no one great us, we asked everyone their name and no one remembered ours. And we asked in Swahili! We were here for a few days and nothing specific to us was ever remembered. We did not feel particularly welcome.

Loved the pool, location on beach was nice. Supper took forever. I like long meals but this was at least 2 hours each night - I think the menu should be shorter with a focus on fresh and prepared that day.

Lovely view.

Got water only on first day which was weird.

The cottages are set in a beautiful landscape and the eating area overlooks the Indian Ocean. The room we were given was near the pool but unfortunately the air conditioning didn't work so they moved us to another room where the fan rattled pretty loud and the bathroom was much smaller and dingy looking.

Breakfast is served on the veranda of your room. Breakfast was ok. Consisted of fruits, bread and eggs (made your way). We ended up eating dinner here every night and the food was pretty good. Wifi is available but it's not free. You pay for blocks of MB. $2 for 100 MB, $4 for 2 MB. The room has a safe and fridge but you are only given water your first night which stinks because you don't get water to brush your teeth with if you spend more than 1 night there. The electricity also seems a bit iffy. On our first night, the electricity went out for a few seconds. On our 2nd night, it went out for about 30 seconds.

The beach itself wasn't that great near the cottage. Further down, it was much nicer but of course the resorts would be alot more expensive.

We spent a peaceful weekend at Flame Tree Cottages this September. The cottages are set in a beautiful and peaceful garden. There is a swimming pool with plenty of loungers and hammocks. There are several hammocks perfectly positioned to lie in and watch the sun set over the ocean!

The beach is just the other side of a small stone wall. We went at full moon so the tide was out for most of the morning. However, the owners will lend you old shoes to go walking in the low tide to see the sea creatures. In the afternoon/evening the tide was right up to the stone wall and the currents were too strong to swim in. However, it didn't matter as we were happy swimming in the lovely pool.

The accommodation was comfortable. We had hot water in the afternoons and evenings but not in the mornings. Fast Wifi is available for a small price and there is an electronic safe in each room. Each cottage has a veranda with comfy chairs. Breakfast is served each morning on the veranda. We had juice, hot drinks, bread, butter, jams, a fruit platter and a choice of eggs/omelettes and pancakes.

Food was available throughout the day at the hotel restaurant. It was reasonably priced. I spent roughly £30 during the two days for lunch, dinner and soft drinks. The food was a bit hit and miss. I had a lovely curry on the first night (the nicest in my month long stay in stone town) but the stir fried vegetables with cous cous that I had the second night was a little bland. The fruit crumble was also bizarre as it had watermelon and banana inside.

The couple who owned the cottages were very welcoming and gave good advice about local attractions.

All in all we had a lovely weekend at Flametree amd would thoroughly recommend it!

We stayed for 4 nights at flame tree, the grounds and pool and really nice and staff very friendly. Room was OK, paid extra for sea view which was bit of a waste of money as all the rooms has a good view of gardens etc and you couldn't really see the ocean from room!

The bed was very small and room was clean when we got there but cleaning over the 4 days was not fantastic. Bathroom floor wasn't washed on several days.

Breakfast was nice the first day as it is served on you balcony. After a few days it gets quite boring as it is the same very day-fruit then a choice of pancakes or cooked eggs. The breakfast were much better in other hotels. Even a choice of cereal or different fruit each day would be good or a choice of toast or sausages etc.

We didn't eat in the hotel at night as the prices were higher than other places in the town which offered more choice and had a bit more buzz.
Drinks were kept at good prices though and we enjoyed it on the whole. It is in a good location to walk to town but still quiet at night.

We traveled to Flame Tree as a group of 13 after 10 had climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and a two-day safari excursion. The staff was friendly and helped us check-in. We decided to have dinner at the hotel that night as we expected the beach bbq. Apparently there was a mixup and the bbq required a day's notice to setup (even though this was supposed to be arranged). We enjoyed our meal, but after seeing prices at other restaurants the next day, this restaurant is overpriced for what you get. The location of the hotel can't be beat. It is right on the beach and offers beautiful views at sunset.

The second night we were there (also the last night of our trip) we had a big issue with dinner. Since there was a mixup with the bbq on night 1, they offered us a "special bbq" for the next night. There was a lot of confusion with dinner - (1) the staff only asked a few individuals of the group what they wanted to order for dinner throughout the day; (2) apparently the special part of the bbq was a reduced price (I can't remember the exact pricing but the discount was not the cost of the app and dessert) for only the entree instead of receiving an appetizer and dessert as well; (3) the owners were very unwilling to discuss the dinner at that time (although the next day the husband was much more amenable). It was an extremely unfortunate way to end an otherwise great vacation, and what made things worse was just the overall level of customer service shown by the owners. The staff of the hotel could not have been nicer, while a little slow, they were very attentive which made us feel even worse about the events of the night because it was not the staff's fault at all.

Another improvement that could be made is about the menu/book of services. There were a number of discrepancies between what was in the book vs. what was offered. For example, we wanted to go to yoga one morning - in the book it said 8:30am or 5:30pm, in actuality the classes were at 8am and 5pm. Some items on the dinner menu were "unavailable". So the entire book could use an update.

I most likely would not go back to flame tree mainly due to the bbq issue. However, I would recommend the actual cottages to others because the rooms are a great deal (assuming you get the right price) and the location is great as well. I just would not recommend eating at the hotel especially since there are many other places within walking distance which are much more affordable.

We spent four nights here in late July. The hotel is a collection of small cottages with a pool in the center of the garden. It is a very attractive setting with beautiful flowers and greenery. The beach is at the far end of the property. Along the beach are tables where guests can enjoy dinner while watching the ocean and the setting sun. It is a beautiful view. The rooms are what would be considered basic in North America but they are comfortable and attractive. We slept well and enjoyed our breakfast on the patio each morning. The owner of the hotel is a Zanzibar native and his wife Scottish. He is multi-lingual and glad to share his knowledge of the island's history and culture as well as tips on enjoying the various attractions nearby. We particularly enjoyed the turtle sanctuary which is about a 10 minute walk down the beach. Just having a person we could depend on for advice and information was very nice. He lent us some water shoes so we could wade into the ocean in the early morning and see all the sea creatures at low tide. We saw extraordinary bright red and blue star fish and many other marvellous creatures and we would not have known to go out if he had not suggested it. I had only two complaints. One is the coffee served at breakfast is instant. Yuck! In a country that produces coffee, this seemed really unfortunate! I did discover the Hilton hotel two doors down had good espresso and lattes served on their patio and I enjoyed my morning coffee there each day. My second complaint was that smoking is permitted at the dinner tables. In the countries where the guests come from, smoking in a restaurant was outlawed years ago but in Zanzibar, they lit up as soon as they sat down to dinner. One meal was spoiled by guests all around us puffing away. It would be preferable if the hotel simply refused to allow it. I would also advise anyone visiting to take lots of cash. Almost no where accepts credit cards and there is no ATM outside Stone Town. I did not have quite enough cash and we ended up eating twice at a not so great restaurant just because they would take a credit card. This place is very beautiful and well worth a visit and if I am lucky enough to return to Zanzibar, I would certainly return to this hotel.
