“Nice place”
Reviewed 30 July 2012

Really nice place to stay. The rooms have great views and is very clean. It is not the best beach in front of the hotel but you can walk 15 minutes to a great beach. The food is pretty basic and after a few days you want something else. There are other options for eating around.

Remember to visit the aquarium next to Mnarani. There are lot's of turtles.

Coco at the reception is very nice, happy and always ready to help.

Mnarani was the ideal place for lying in the sun, overlooking the ocean and walking on the beach. It is very well kept and we loved the food. Breakfasts are more or less the same each day, but dinners are really nice. We loved the evening they treated us with local food and local acrobatic entertainment. The staff is a wonderful group of people, always ready to help whether it was to arrange trips or teach bao. Mnarani is a little way from the 'party strip' but it is easy enough to walk to and the upside is that here we were not inundated with locals peddling trips, tours and trinkets. Our cottage was on the small side but very clean, mosquito netted, airconditioned and fanned. The only thing we would have liked would have been coffee and tea more readily available, although the staff always brought it when we asked. I can recommend Mnarani without any reservations. Thank you for a wonderful holiday.

The first time I stayed here was in March 2008 with friends and it was amazing. Then I came with my husband in March 2012 and stayed three weeks. Mnarani represents everything that we wanted. For a property that would normally have a 300+ room hotel on it, Mnarani has only about 30 or so rooms giving it a luxurious feel with lots of walkways etc. NO CROWDS! Lots of property without lots of crowds. If you want nightlife and or a full fledged beach, you can simply walk along the beach to Nungwi village or take a taxi for $5. When the tide is out, you can walk out and really enjoy the scenery. The staff and really friendly and helpful AND they take the time to know your names. This hotel literally has everything and I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Zanzibar!

I've been to Zanzibar before, but went to the south, so I was really not sure what to expect, despite perusing its site for several days.

The rustic look of the resort is awesome, as is the panoramic view of the sea you're welcomed with. We were a little disappointed that there was not really a beach of sand to see - as they'd recently had a storm that washed it all away - but the sand bar offered more than enough beach-walking space.

A walk to Nungwi, which is just around the corner, is well worth the effort, as here is the beach you're looking for. Make your way along the beach to several of the less-isolated hotels for meals or cocktails.
The hotel itself is beautiful and well thought-out: the boardwalk juts out over the beach in all the right places, and there are three access points to the beach. The honeymoon suite - though not as isolated as you may wish - has its own honeymoon bed overlooking the sea. It's the perfect relaxation spot. There are hammocks and swings all over the chill areas, and the bar is also perfectly situated.

We were really looking forward to the food while at the hotel, but have to admit we were a bit disappointed with the predominantly Western fare: the first night, we were offered a set menu, and the same fish was on the menu for three days in a row. Apparently, it's because the kitchen staff believe they need to give tourists what they're used to, and they don't realise that Westerners come to an island destination to eat the local fare and engorge themselves on seafood. We had a local dinner only one night of the 7 nights we spent there. You would also expect more curries, but, as I've said before, Western fare such as spaghetti bolognaise, pasta alfredo, meat balls, pepper steak, and other such meals, are the standard. Don't get me wrong, the food tastes really good, but when I'm on holiday I don't want to eat things I can make for myself at home.

The food was really the most disappointing part of the holiday :( Also, the prices of cocktails were almost unreasonably expensive, and they had too much alcohol in them.

However, the service is brilliant, and the excursion offerings are also good. We went with the hotel to Mnemba Island for a snorkelling trip and lunch, and though I suffered from seasickness the entire way, it was great fun. The hotel also offers kayak and snorkelling gear hire, so you'll never find yourself without anything to do if you're tired of lazing around.

The room service is also excellent, with a turn-down and clean every day. There are laundry services on offer as well, though we didn't take that option.

The rooms themselves are also perfect: they are decorated with traditional Zanzibari furniture, and have four-poster beds that are ideal for those necessary mosquito nets.

Overall, we had a great time at Mnarani. It's nice and isolated from the major tourist locations along Nungwi, allowing a perfect romantic destination, but is still close enough to the village and these resorts if you'd like to adventure. There is also a turtle sanctuary around the corner which is a must-visit location.

Room Tip: Zanzibar House is quite nice, but make sure you get one of the top rooms, as they have an excellent...

Of all eight weeks we travelled through Africa with our kids (8 and 11) and stayed in many different types of accomodation, this was the most disappointing. I felt like we were very isolated and the hotel was dated and didnt suit our needs. The booking process was an initial pain and we were made to pay the whole amount upfront by a wire to another country with the promise the cost of the wire $35 Aus dollars would be refunded to us on arrival. When I spoke with the staff to let them know we were not happy with the accomodation and we would be leaving early (within 2 hrs of arriving for a four day stay - hadnt even been in the room as it wasnt ready) we were unable to get any refund of the four nights, not evena refund on the $60 transfer for our return, nor the refund for the wire as promised...Just a really dodgy experience...STAY AWAY!! It cost me about $1200 and a days wasted holiday,....
