I have never experienced such quality service in any property as i have in La Gemma. We stayed in a Deluxe Room on all inclusive. This property has this thing call SUPER ALL INCLUSIVE. You pay a big amount but then its worth all penny! You can eat / drink anything at anytime from anywhere. One of my best holidays i have ever had!

Room Tip: Deluxe Rooms on the 3rd floor have a better view Deluxe Rooms 218 & 219 are interconnecting roo...

This was the third country we visited as part of our honeymoon. We wanted a tropical island style destination but one that wasn't too commercialised or too touristy. April/May is supposedly the rainy season so we were a bit anxious about booking the holiday, but all in all it was the most suitable option from all the places (Mauritius, Thailand, Bali, Maldives) we considered bearing in mind price, logistics and not being commercialised.

The journey here was a bit shocking - possibly my naivete but I never expected it to be so rural. It is surprising to arrive at La Gemma and be in a place so utterly distinct from the obvious poverty we had driven through. Ultimately La Gemma delivers. It's picturesque - the beach is the azure colour and white powdery sand I had longed for. The sea is warm and flat - my ideal swimming conditions. The pool is large and attractive. The gardens are well manicured. The sunsets are spectacular. You can laze on your beach lounger until 7pm if you wish and not feel the slightest compulsion to get up. The rooms are well appointed and comfortable. The sea view from the bed is amazing.

The food is aplenty. Meals are a 3 course affair and abound in variety. Soups, all kinds of different breads including breadsticks I could not stop eating, bruschetta, a huge number of salads and all manner of accompaniments, curries, Western style roasts, rice and other starches. Dessert is a number of different mousses, pastries and cakes. A pasta and stirfry bar operate separately so you can have your choice freshly prepared. Breakfasts are equally varied with cereals, fruit, yoghurts, pastries, eggs to order, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, pancakes and waffles. You can order a freshly squeezed juice of your choosing as well. Think pineapple, carrot and apple. There is also a selection of cakes and biscuits. During the day you have various snack type foods you can get from the poolside - sandwiches, chips, sausages, spring rolls, popcorn. There are a large number of alcoholic beverages available including cocktails all day. You really are spoilt for choice. The food is not gourmet - but it is very good.

The service is amazing and quite honestly the best I've ever encountered. The hotel staff are ever friendly and warm with their smiles and frequent "jumbos" and "hakuna matata's". There's always an attentive person ready to take your drink order or pull out your chair. Quite the opposite to some of the service I've received in my own country and around the world. On the first day I enquired about their laundry service and asked if they had an iron I might use. When I returned to my room, I had a laundry inventory and bag on the bed and the ironing board and iron set up. When they found out we were honeymooning, we had a bottle of sparkling wine and tropical fruits delivered to our room. Truly impressive responsiveness.

The only complaint I can make is that there is not much in the way of snorkelling on the La Gemma beach since there are no nearby reefs. One would need to book a tour which is costly. Also - the only watersports in the all-inclusive package is canoeing. Everything else comes at a cost - which has a € price tag associated with it. The spa at the hotel is also pricy - about €70 for a massage.

All in all - I would highly recommend it though.

We just came back from our 10 nights stay and overall the resort is ok but there a sum of small things which didn't make it perfect.

+ great sunset, really clean, super water, shadow from palms and umbrellas, enough space
- sunbeds are not very comfortable (no pillows), service for drinks at the beach is poor

+ clean and really proper room service
- we had room 329 and it is for the deleuxe category a bit small and it is old and you can see and feel that - the bathroom got renovated but overall this room is not a 5 star standard
- mini bar is for all inclusive really poor equiped

Food & Drinks
+ The vairety of the buffets and offers is proper and the quality is good

+ really friendly and attentive super service

- old

Sports & Activities:
+ really nice possibillities

- The offers from the providers in the Hotel are quiet little and very expensiv

(Sorry for the long review but there is a lot to tell) An hour’s drive North from the old city of Stone Town lays this hidden germ. It is located on the Nungwi beach. We were there end of Nov and it was HOT! The bus/ shuttle that took us there allegedly had air-conditioning, however it didn’t really feel like it. (But I believe them because I think it is very hard cooling people down in this heat.)

Luckily the very local and welcoming reception waiting for you at the end of the drive makes you forget about any minor discomfort. A local tribal music and dance group greets you while you sip on welcoming cocktails and receive a bracelet to make sure everyone knows you are allowed to be at the lodge and use the facilities. (This is an all inclusive resort – which is fantastic.)

You also receive your key and a map to navigate you to your room. Yes the map is necessary because La Gemma is HUGE! Remember you will walk a lot here!(There are staff driving around with golf carts to pick you up if necessary or you can request it.) The lodge is widely spread and has a lot of different types of rooms.

We stayed in one of the suites which have an open-plan lounge, dining and kitchenette area with a spacious adjoining room and bathroom with only a shower. The beds have a mosquito net cover. (Have to say we didn’t see a lot of mosquitos luckily.) This room is located on the farthest side of the lodge, but has a lovely view on the ocean from the two balconies (with a small patch of grass in front). There are deluxe rooms, suites and villas with four separate rooms and the presidential villa with its own pool. The suites and deluxe rooms are all located in the same area, stepping-down-cascade-like towards the beach, however you still need to walk through a part of the beautifully laid out gardens, following a wooden walk way and a couple of steps to get to the beach. (Again, please note, you will walk a lot.)

The beach is stunning with thatch roofed canopies and lounging chairs to relax at. There is a pool with “warmer” water.(Probably because of the sun since it is supposed to be cold.) If you want to cool down you will have to go for a dip in the ocean, which is absolutely divine! The water is as quiet as a bath and lukewarm. The colour is as seen in pictures.

While staying at La Gemma you can make use of three to four different dining experiences. Breakfast is served in the Pavilion – with indoors & outdoors seating. There is a variety of restaurants to choose from in the resort: Coral cove Pizzeria, Sea Breeze and the Beach Grill. One of the evenings you even get an interesting show at dinner - by the Masai who then have a jump-off - at the “African Village”, located within the resort. Every evening is a buffet.

You can enjoy sundowners or after dinner drinks on the jetty that is just lovely. It is built on stilts into the ocean and in the evenings after dinner you can even sea a vast variety of fish swimming by in the lights located on the jetty. This is also the place where they have live entertainment or a DJ some evenings. Try the local cocktail which we just loved, Zanzibar Kiss, made of Gin, pineapple and strawberry. The Jetty has two extensions, one is the entertainment area and the other side is a very typical Turkish Coffee bar, which is awesome.

For lunch you can go to the Pavilion which is again a buffet or enjoy an informal lunch – burgers and sandwiches - at the pool bar/restaurant. Here you will also find ice cream and variety of drinks and again the Zanzibar Kiss cocktail.

The resort has conference facilities – Boabab Conference Centre – build around an old, huge Boabab tree.

The staff (actually all the people in Zanzibar) is extremely friendly. Even though basically all of them can speak and understand English, at the resort, someone luckily told us to learn some words in Swahili to get around with. Jumbo – Hello. Hakuna matata – No worries/ Good, thank you. Asanti sana – Thank you. Hapana asanti sana – No, thank you. Karibo – You are welcome. If you start chatting with the staff they even teach you more things to say.

What I also loved was the way they decorated the rooms with flowers every day when making up the room. They put wild flowers like Frangipani, Bougainvillea and Hibiscus on the bed, in every towel and every table. A small touch to make you feel like you are in a tropical paradise every day.

More facilities available at the resort is a clothing boutique, Mvua Spa – wth a variety of treatments, a lovely sunset cruise Northwards, along the coastline. (Not sure if it is free but I think it only happens once a week or on request.) There is also a scuba and snorkelling training centre on the corner of the resort. They have morning and afternoon trips to a reef at a small island close by.(This you have to pay for.) Even if you cannot scuba, snorkelling in that clear water with that amount of beautiful and tropical marine life is breathtaking. It seems the shortest trip is 2 hours, but believe me you want to stay longer every time! If you are lucky you can see dolphins as well. If you want to specifically swim with the dolphins there is a particular spot for it on the main island but is on the South coast.

We really enjoyed our stay here and we wish we could have stayed longer. Truly a Gem in Zanzibar.

The currency is Tanzanian Shillings however they except Dollars as well.

We think best is to not drink the water out of the taps. We used the water from the bottles we received from the estate even to brush our teeth.

Carry a sarong/ pashmina with you if you are a woman. Since this is a majority Moslem country you are not allowed to walk with only you bikini or swimsuit outside the beach area. You will be asked to cover yourself up before entering the restaurants. If you go for a trip to Stone Town you are also expected to cover your shoulders and not wear a miniskirt or very short pants.

The electricity of the whole resort went out a couple of times during the evenings allegedly due to the power supply of Zanzibar but it came on again almost immediately, but maybe just take a spotlight along. (This unfortunately also turns off the air-cons in the rooms which are quite warm during the hot times of the year.)

Room Tip: Make sure you specify in which type of room you want to book: There are deluxe rooms, suites and vil...

Not much more can be said about La Gemma. The service is great, the manager is very hospitable. We were there over New Years and the New Year's Eve dinner put on by them was nothing short of world class!! The things that keeps us coming back as a family is that you have a private beach where you are not bugged all the time by people trying to sell you things which when at such an amazing place could dampen the mood. In conclusion we will return to la Gemma and will no consider going anyway else.

Excellent hotel. I am one of the fussiest people
ever and I couldn't find any faults with this hotel. Hotel is spotlessly clean, food delicious, staff are so helpful and friendly and the location is perfect. My husband and I will definitely be returning.
