If you are looking for a hotel to stay during your trip to Zanzibar - look no further, Zanzibar Retreat Hotel is truly one of the most amazing places I've ever been to. We stayed at Zanzibar Retreat Hotel for 9 nights in June/July 2014 and wished we could've stayed on for another 9 nights. The hotel is small and personal, with the most amazing location as it is situated directly on the beach. The staff are really great - they are super attentive, helpful and always smiling. Manager Karin made our stay at Zanzibar a truly unique experience. She welcomes you to the hotel and makes you feel at home immediately. Karin helped us organise whatever we wanted to do, either it was diving, snorkelling, visiting Stone Town, and so forth. The food was really good: the chefs use local ingredients and fresh produce and everything tastes seriously delicious! The coffee is great too! If you are travelling to Zanzibar, I highly recommend to stay at Zanzibar Retreat Hotel, as you will without doubt have a truly amazing time.

We had a great trip to Zanzibar staying at this small hotel. It is on a beautiful stretch of beach with plenty of loungers of hammocks to relax in. With just 12 rooms you get a great, personalised service. We certainly felt well looked after by Karin and the team who were all friendly and efficient and helped organise excursions and an extra night's stay for us.

My one criticism would be that the matresses are foam, but relatively good quality foam.

We'll be confident recommending this hotel to friends, and if we return to the area would likely stay here again ourselves.

My partner and I only had one night to stay on the beach in Matemwe. From the afternoon when we arrived Karin was extremely helpful and welcoming. After we checked out she allowed us to stay at the resort and even opened up a room for us to shower before leaving in the evening- something beyond what I ever expected. The rooms were set up beautifully and the food was amazing. The beach was gorgeous as well. I hope I get the opportunity to return someday!

We were welcomed and catered personally by Karin, the assistant manager, once we stepped into this hotel. She speaks very good and clear English, always wears a smile on her face. She knows everything you need and will get it ready by then.

We had problems arranging a Discovery Scuba-dive course. She could settle and arrange everything just by a click of email one day before. Things were ready by the time we arrived from Stone Town. Unbelievable!!! It was just like we were the only guests in the hotel but no, it was in full-house for both days we stayed there. Karin should be awarded the best staff there!

Other staff are also friendly and caring. Special thanks should be given to "Lily" (the lady in charge of the restaurant), who arranged a late dinner for us without prior request. "Asante!"

Nothing to complain about the room, swimming pool and inner environment. The beach, just a few steps walk, is also unbeatable. We were walking around every part of the hotel and the beach with our bare feet for 2 days.

We also enjoyed the massage there. Even my husband, who doesn't do massage at all, commented it good. The stay there at the end of our trip makes our trip perfect! We feel like being home. Relaxing! Superb! Have no reason not recommending it.

To make it short, it is a paradise. This wonderful hotel is located directly on the beautiful Matamwe Beach on the west side of Zanzibar. The beach is very quiet and the hotel fits nicely in the surrounding landscape. The staff is very friendly and warm, which easily makes you feel at home (but with better weather :)). The rooms are clean and decorated beautifully in local fashion. The food and drinks (especially during the cocktail happy hour) are delicious and fairly priced. We were lucky and could experience the great weekly barbecue during our stay. The hotel also comes with great details making your live easier like beach bags and towels, straw hats and Kikoys (Zanizibari shawls). We really enjoyed our stay there and would come back here any time! Better sooner than later! :)

Very nice way to chill out after climbing kili and camping on safari. Happy hour with jan and karin was nice to have a good chat with some well travelled management. The staff were excellent when it came to all things. The food is central to the place, pretty nice that you may not want to try elsewhere. Rooms nice too.

This hotel exceeds all expectations. The staff go out of there way to assist, we had issues with our departing flights and the manager Jan took it upon himself to personally sought out for us. Karin's tips for tours are amazing, the serenity, the staff and food simply AMAZING! Don't stay anywhere else it you will be disappointed.
