“Great place to relax”
Reviewed 2 September 2011

We spent a few days here on our honeymoon. A great place to just lie by the pool or private plunge pool, and relax. the rooms are amazing and very spacious.

We stayed with our kids for a few days in August and the bungalows were as nice as expected and seen on the pictures. Large and beautifully decorated with air co, TV and DVD and a large terrace with a plunge pool. We knew about the lack of privacy of the terrace as the bungalows on the left and right can see everything as can the people walking on the pad below your bungalow. This is unfortunate for such a high level resort. The daily cleaning of the room was excellent; no complain. The beach is as expected i.e. you cannot swin at low tide and at high tide you can swin from the wooden stairs.
What was however disappointing was the quality of service and especially the restaurant at the pool which was extremely slow and very poor quality. It is more a snack-bar of a two star hotel than what you would expect in a resort where you pay more than 500 UD/night. For us, it was a real frustration to wait so long every day and not to be able to eat better (sea) food in a place where fish is just a few meters away. Besides lobsters, there is only one fish on the menu, called "fish of the day" but it was the same fish for several days in a row ! Restaurant for the dinner is better even tough the menus' were not our taste, they had a clear English "flavor".
Laundry service was really bad, not sure if & how they ironed our clothes. At the pool (beautiful with superb view), the used towels left on the sun loungers were not collected by the staff until the end of the day and one broken chair was left "as is" during our entire stay. Small things but not the ones you would expect in this kind of luxury resort.
The new manager, a French woman, is cold and not very mindful of her guests.
In conclusion, we were very disappointed as with this level of prices, we were expecting the service and food of a luxury and exclusive resort . We would clearly not go back nor recommend without the various caveat's above.

This is a long overdue review.

My fiance and I stayed at Kasha for 4 days at the end of February and it was a fantastic, peaceful holiday and certainly one of the best we've had.

Kasha has a wonderful tranquil air. Contrary to the review below, which I must admit surprised and baffled me, I found the staff were absolutely lovely, genuinely friendly and always accommodating and thoughtful in their service.

The rooms were impeccably clean and tidy. The decor was tasteful with lovely little touches left by the staff after cleaning - such as really beautiful flower petal arrangements on the duvet etc. The view of the sea from the villas is nothing short of amazing.

The food was good but some dishes were not to my taste (that is not to say they weren't nice), and I must say the kitchen staff were lovely actually, and made a couple of things for me off the menu when I requested them. The lobster was excellent and a must have.

Kasha is blissful and since leaving, I have recommended it to some friends as a honeymoon destination. We really did love it and hope to return again in the future.

Our itinerary was to spend the first part of our time on Zanzibar in Kasha and follow this with Matemwe Bungalows. Obviously we were expecting quite a step up in terms of luxury, food, location etc between the two but I was more than pleasantly surprised by Kasha in almost every aspect!

My only complaint... and it’s a small one It is fair to say that the grounds are still a little bare, the vegetation looks like it has still to fill out, although presumably this will not take long given Zanzibars location in the tropics.

All in all very impressed by Kasha's standards and would love to visit again (very soon hopefully)!

This place is not paradise. First the soft points: It is lacking in energy, the staff members look miserable (they had to travel from faraway villages to work here everyday), the managers were pretty reserved, sad, and bored (looked like they were hiding something), they played the same damn CD over and over and over again during dinner every night, and the whole atmosphere was anemic, despite the beauty of Zanzibar. The food was pretty soggy and bad, too. The beach is not really outside your window - you have to leave the property and go walking down a long staircase during low tide to reach it. If you want a boring, lifeless place, go here.

Now the hard, unnegotiable points: we found cockroaches crawling on the bathroom walls under our bath towels, and around the bed frame above our bed, as well as geckos crawling inside on the walls. Needless to say, we could not sleep peacefully at night and dreaded coming back to this place. The snotty manager said "this is the tropics, you can't expect to not find bugs." I don't know if anyone else would like to hear that on their expensive honeymoon, but I sure didn't. Flies are one thing; cockroaches are simply a sign of lack of cleanliness. In contrast, we didn't find any bugs or reptiles in ANY of the several tents and tented camps we stayed at in Tanzania and Kenya.

We heard enough from others in Zanzibar that this wasn't the place to go, but we found out too late.

Room Tip: 2 rows of villas - Reserve the oceanfront ones!

The Kasha Boutique Hotel Management regrets these guests did not enjoy their stay as they should have. Fair criticism are always accepted as they help us to make sure we provide the best service at all time. Nevertheless, we would like to clarify some points mentioned above:

(1) We support the community of Matemwe by employing almost half of our staff from the nearby village. They do walk to come at work (20 or 30 min.) as many other workers do around the world. We provide them with fair working conditions and most of our staff has been working with us since the opening in 2009.

(2) Kasha Boutique Hotel is a place where people come to relax after a safari on mainland Tanzania and/or have a break from their daily hectic life at home. At Kasha, we privilege serene atmosphere giving a lot of privacy to our guests because this is what they are looking for.

(3) Kasha is indeed located on a cliff. The staircase leads straight to the ocean when high tide and the beach is situated 50 meters away from the staircase on the right side of the hotel at low tide.

(4) All our villas are cleaned twice a day and consistent efforts are made to keep our premises as spotless as possible. All the villas have a private garden – all around the building and splash pool to give a maximum of privacy to our guests. Unfortunately we cannot avoid ALL insects to enter the villas. Geckos and/or insects in Africa are not synonymous of lack of cleanliness. They are part of the environment and we do our bests to keep them in the bush – where they belong – and not in the villas.

Getting to zanzibar is not straightforward requiring two plane journeys and a bit of waiting about in african airports. However it was definitely worth it. Kasha was one of the places we stayed. If you want to get away from the tourists, step relatively lightly on the environment and the people of zanzibar this is a place you will appreciate. Understated comfort, peace and quiet, fantastic views, local activity, dhows sailing by, wonderful sunrises, good food, excellent service and staff so friendly and committed. learn a few words of Swahili, prepare your self for the poverty on the doorstep, go with the pace and the people. Don't miss it.

Arriving at ZNZ was not the problem we had been lead to believe by other reviews. We showed our yellow fever vaccination certificates and were then given a form to fill in and then ushered to a window where our visas were issued for $50 each!! The immigration people did not want to talk, they just wanted our money! We were in the car park looking out for our taxi wthin 15 minutes of landing!

The journey to Kasha was just over an hour, passing through villages and small towns. The last 20 minutes gives you an glimpse of real rural Africa! Out taxi driver said it was called "Massge Road" for obvious reasons! But worth every bump!!!!

Then you arrive at Kasha and boy ,what a wonderful scene awaits you! You are escorted to a seat and given a refreshing cocktail and Peter and Joanna give you an introductory talk about Kasha. ( Joanna and Peter are great hosts and make you feel especially welcome and are happy to answer any questions or help out on trips! Nothing is too much to ask them!) You are then taken to your Villa. WOW it was amazing, a lovely airy seating area, a huge bed and a bathroom with everything you need including a deep deep bath which you can soak in and look out past the Bougainvillea and out to the Indian Ocean! I forgot to say there were flowers everywhere, it all looked exotic!

Outside there is an under cover seating area and also loungers and a sun umbrella and the best, your very own plunge pool! I have to say I used it in the mornings to watch the fisherman in their boats go out to get their catch for the day and all through the day to keep refreshed! Then again at night before retiring it was the ultimate wind down , watching the ocean and the stars!!!

Some days there was a barbecue at the Pool Bar, which had the most amazing fresh fish caught locally and very tasty salads! There is also asplendid Infinity Pool to laze in and more sunloungers to lie on to soak up the sun and the view! The beach has white sands and the sea is a turquoise blue!!

The Restaurant serves locally sourced food and the staff are extremely pleasant and helpful! They are all happy and make you feel very welcome!

I can only repeat what I said at the beginning, "I was in PARADISE!"
