“A great place for a honeymoon getaway.”
Reviewed 18 August 2012

The moment you arrive you get the feeling you are somewhere luxurious. The hotel is at the end of a very dusty, bumpy track but the journey is forgotten about quickly enough as you enter the grand reception area. The hotel is decorated so tastefully and has a wonderful African theme in keeping with the surroundings. We were greeted by Emily the manager who was friendly and welcoming. Are room wasn't ready as we were early arriving but the reception area was the perfect place to wait. It is full of oversized furnishing and plush pillows. On arrival at our villa we were taken back by the sheer size of the room and the whole atmosphere of the place.  The room has a large king size bed and many seating areas.  The bathroom is very grand and it has both a shower and a large opulent bath. The main feature for us was the outside area which hosts a large seating area, plunge pool and loungers.  This area is very private and we spent most of our days here. The sun leaves this area around 3pm but you can then use the pool where the sun stays till sunset. The infinity pool looks out over the Indian ocean and is a lovely place to relax. We were on half board and the food although not as high quality as we had expected it was still enjoyable. The staff are very friendly yet at times we felt the restaurant staff weren't particularly well trained and there was often confusion when ordering meals.  All in all this was a great place to spend our honeymoon and if you're looking for relaxation and tranquility this is the place for you.

My fiance & I stayed at Kasha for 7 nights, and without doubt it was one of the best experiences we've had. Emilie & her staff really do make your stay a pleasure... warm, friendly service. As mentioned in other reviews, even when it was full it still felt really private and chilled out. I did provide a lower rating for the location (just a minor gripe), the final stretch to reach Kasha is really quite rough which makes leaving the resort a bit of a challenge, so be prepared if you would like to spend quite a bit of time exploring the island. We chose to spend most of our time at the resort, so this didn't spoil anything for us. Another small issue to be aware of, is that the resort doesn't have one of those pristine beaches on its doorstep... its on the edge of a ridge, and when the tides are in the beach access is limited. Recommended activity is the beach bbq & snorkeling, it was really awesome... and the private dinner in your room.

I would not hesitate to recommend Kasha or make another trip back....

Anybody booking a 11 night honeymoon stay in Africa, after a safari, is going to be a bit nervous.... but we shouldn't have worried. Kasha is the most amazing place to stay and just "stop". It's very intimate, and although it was nearly full, we felt like we had it to ourselves most of the time.
The staff were lovely; charming, funny, smiling and ever so keen to please - even those nearly-invisible who provide security, turn down beds, and clean rooms, and set wonderful flower arrangements not just on the bed but all over the bungalow..

The food is amazing - we had one night in which the food wouldn't have done a London restaurant proud, and a couple of nights when it was truly sumptuous. With amazing attention to detail.

The setting is gorgeous - okay so the beach isn't "fluffy sand" - but it really doesn't matter.

Just off the coast, near Mnemba island, we swam not just with an amazing array of fish it felt like we were in an acquarium, but also dolphins and even a turtle.

The rooms. Huge. Wonderfully thought out. Huge baths. Private splash pool. Cool terrace. Stylish yet very effective mossie net.

The best bit? The gloriously romantic dinner we had on our last night, on our "deck", overlooking the rippling and roaring Indian ocean.

Thank you!!

Room Tip: It's worth being sea front - then your splash pool and deck is even more private

We recently returned from a 3 night stay at Kasha Boutique Hotel while traveling in Zanzibar after a week long safari. What a perfect way to end the trip! I only wish we had more time at Kasha. My husband and I were traveling with our 14 yr. old twins and we each had our own rooms. Emilie (the manager) and Charles were most welcoming as were the rest of the staff. The rooms are huge and beautiful, we arrived to hibiscus petals dotted all around. The private outdoor plunge pools and spacious seating area are luxurious. We loved the infinity pool and bar area so also spent a lot of time there taking in the beautiful view. We spent one afternoon scuba diving and snorkeling with One Ocean tours and it was so great to get dropped off at the beach stairs to our hotel at high tide and not have to do the bus ride back to the hotel. There is a nice sitting area off the bar in the main lobby which has a library where you can share books, a large screen TV and some nice coffee table books on the history of Zanzibar. The food and service were excellent. One morning our children didn't want to leave the room for breakfast and when the wait staff noticed they offered to bring something to their room so they delivered a tray of fruit and croissants, very accommodating. I only wish we could have stayed longer and hopefully we can get back again some day!

This hotel needs a complete overhaul, including, in my view, new management. However, even if this were done, there is no getting away from the fact that it is a) far from Matemwe, b) difficult to reach by car and c) that it is not a "beach resort" as you might imagine it. It is also shockingly over-priced. On the upside, I should say that the food was quite nice, the rooms spacious and the *local* staff friendly.

So many things were wrong about this hotel that it would seem petty, almost incredible, if I listed them all. However, some of the more fundamental issues should be flagged up for the benefit of others:

1.This hotel is *not* in Matemwe. If you are attracted by Matemwe, having read about it in guide books as being a place with a "beautiful beach", i.e. you are imagining a wide expanse of fluffy white sand, then forget it. This hotel claims to be in Matemwe but is actually a (very long) 5km drive north along a horrendously bumpy track. The journey is awful, and then when you arrive you discover that there is in fact not a beach as you might imagine it. There are cliffs and there is the seabed, revealed at low tide. For much of the day the water is lapping against the cliff and hence you cannot see sand at all. When the tide is out (and it goes out a very long way) you can walk on compacted white sand – i.e. the sea bed - which is a bit like clay. There are rocks and rock pools which can be fun to explore, but there are also very many sea urchins and also stone fish. If that appeals, fine, but this is most definitely not a beach resort. The rooms are marketed as being close to the sea but in fact there is a large expanse of scrub between you and the sea.

2. The hotel is poorly maintained. Each room has a plunge pool, which sounds great. We arrived and soon jumped into our plunge pool. A few minutes later my son, aged 5, said he had been “bitten” by something in the water. I pulled him out to find blood pouring from his foot. Upon investigation I discovered that the tiles in the plunge pool were falling off, leaving some extremely sharp, jagged edges.

3. The management is very inexperienced (that is the most diplomatic way I can put it). Having patched up my son’s foot I notified the management about the problem and expressed my surprise that a plunge pool could be left in this condition. Eventually the manageress called my room and said “I have been told you would like to speak to me”. Instead of saying sorry, how awful, we do apologise that your son cut his foot in our pool, she made excuses about how this had (allegedly) never happened before, and in any case the hotel was full so “what would you like me to do about it?” She then went on, ironically, to say that in fact the tiles were falling off in all the plunge pools and the main swimming pool, so there was no point in changing rooms! This is when I took a closer look at the hotel as a whole and realised what a poor condition it is in. The mangeress made some feeble remarks about how these things were going to be tidied up in the close season but she seemed to care not one bit about what had actually happened. Her tone was curt and she failed to understand one of the basic principle of management: if something goes wrong, make sure you fix it and make amends with good grace. Having spent quite an uncomfortable night on account of a partially functioning AC unit, and then realised that the “beach” was yet again inaccessible, I decided we would leave. The manageress was again uncooperative, insisting that we would have to pay the full price for the two nights we had booked. The details of the discussion that followed are rather petty but eventually we did leave and paid for only one night, most unimpressed by the management style.

4. This hotel is massively over-priced. On the basis of the above, the $500 price tag is astonishing. This is *not* a luxury hotel, and you can get far far better value elsewhere in Zanzibar.

At Kasha Boutique Hotel we take all reviews and feedbacks, whether positive or negative, very seriously. Kasha Team regrets these guests did not enjoy their stay as they should have. Fair criticism is always accepted as they help us to make sure we provide the best services at all times. The above comments have been taken into consideration and issues raised in the review will be handled through immediate actions. Nevertheless, we would like to clarify some points for others:

(1) Location: the hotel is located 4.5 km away from the main village of Matemwe. It takes about 30 minutes to reach Kasha via a dirty road. This detail is clearly mentioned on our website and all documents sent to clients so that visitors are aware of the situation. The hotel is located out of the village. Clients can reach Kigomani in 30 minutes by walking on the beach.

(2) Beach Resort: we do not market Kasha as a “beach resort” due to its location. It is clearly stated that the hotel is built on a cliff (4 meters high). We prefer to highlight the unique location of the hotel, its peacefulness (ideal for a retreat) and its combination of rustic and elegant atmosphere. We promote the property as an exclusive stylish hotel.
(a) Beach: it is accessible only at low tide. There is no permanent beach in front of the hotel since all our facilities are situated on the cliff (see pictures posted by our clients). However, the permanent beach is accessible nearby at low and high tide. It stretches from Kasha down to the village of Kigomani and Matemwe and further South (15 km of white sandy beach). At low tide, a staircase leads to the beach. At high tide, clients can walk through our main gate (entrance) and follow a pathway leading to the beach. Swimming along the East Coast is not possible all day long. There is not enough water in the lagoon. The reef is about 400 meters away from the cliff and gives a lively atmosphere to the lagoon with villagers fishing, collecting seaweed and shells, and dhows passing. The tide calendar is available at Reception and there is usually no issues about beach/swimming as clear information are provided upon arrival.
(b) For safety reasons, villas are not built right on the edge of the cliff but few meters away. There are 2 categories of villas. Villas are very similar. The difference is location i.e. they are lined up in 2 rows (sea view and sea front). The location of Kasha gives a great opportunity to overlook the Indian Ocean and the Mnemba Island. Colorful gardens and bush gives privacy to private patio and plunge pool for each villa.

(3) Maintenance: all plunge pools will be refurbished during the closing period (April/May 2012). We acknowledge that some mosaics were gone but the condition was safe to use both plunge pools and main pool. We have never experienced any incidents/complaints so far with our clients. We do daily maintenance of plunge pools and other facilities and we make sure that safety of clients is ensured at all times. The hotel is well looked after and regularly maintained.

(4) Management: we did our best to handle the situation in a professional manner in order to please these clients and find a solution. We did apologize for what happened and made sure that the whole family was safe and looked after during their stay. When the incident occurred, the assistant manager walked down to the room to check on the child and brought the first aid kit. The child was fine as he had already received treatment (antiseptic and plaster). When I called the room, I said I was sorry to hear that there was an incident in the pool and immediately enquired about the child and necessary treatments. The parents said there was nothing serious and things were fine but wanted to know if it was possible to move to another villa. Unfortunately we were fully booked. I regretted not to be able to give them another room for the night but said it would be possible the day after. When the parents raised the issue of poor maintenance, I explained that refurbishment jobs would be carried out soon. I did not mention it as an excuse because it did not help them at that moment, but to show that we were aware of the situation and that we were looking after our facilities to ensure a great experience to our clients and the quality of our services.

(5) Rate: regarding the price charged, I would like to clarify that these clients benefited from our April Special – Get 2/Pay 1. As they spent only one night, they only paid half of the bill. There was no argument about it and all our discussions were courteous and polite.

Kasha Management assumes responsibilities and always handles complaints/comments in a professional manner. All feedbacks are addressed so we can ensure delivering high-end services and provide a unique and unforgettable experience for our guests.

Had a brief but most enjoyable stay here, excellent food, luxurious private pools and management that stopped at nothing to make the stay memorable. The suites are extremely comfortable, especially the bath for two and clearly much detail and thought has gone into the design of these facilities. Although a bit of an off-road drive to get there, it really is worth it in the end.

Room Tip: sea view rooms have private pools

We stayed here for 7 days after a 5 day safari in Tanzania and achieved all that we wanted to - not much! The staff were all (bar one rather solumn young man) very friendly and helpful and we barely had to lift a finger. The room was exceptionally comfortable and luxurious and very clean. I would suggest the shower could do with a new head but that's about it. The private porch and plunge pool were perfect for the days we didn't feel like leaving our room, and yet as there are so few other villas and guests much of the time the main pool was ours alone as well. The pool was great at the beginning of the week but towards the end of the week for some reason looked a little grotty and may have been as they were closing down for the rainy season. One day we talk a lovely walk out to the reef which made a nice change and also to see some of the marine life (plentiful sea urchins so wear the shoes that the hotel provides!) The food was great, breakfasts were more than sufficient and catered to our every need and the dinners gave a lovely choice of meals which were just the right size and very well presented. Definitely a honeymood retreat.
