“Fantastic place to stay in Matemwe”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 September 2013

I love Mohammed's because it is a beautiful little spot in northern Matemwe, right on the beach and very close to Mnemba Atoll. The bungalows are very clean and simple, yet comfortable. Mohammed is the first local to have built on the beach at Matemwe and he and his wife started by renting out just two rooms and were so successful that they kept adding rooms as they could. Mohammed and his lovely wife and 5 children live on site, and they give the bungalows a low-key, relaxed, chill vibe. It's very peaceful, serene, quiet, just lovely. They have hanging hammocks overlooking the beach, and each bungalow has it's own veranda. The restaurant is also very good. Many people who are staying in the posh resorts next door go to Mohammed's Restaurant as the food is fresh, of high quality and incredibly affordable.

The bungalows are not fancy, so if that's what you're looking for, this isn't your spot. But if you like very affordable, clean, straight-forward bungalows right on the beach for about $30/night for a double, then give it a try.

If you're coming from Stone Town, I also suggest taking dalla-dalla 118 (Matemwe) for 1,500 shillings, or about $1USD. It will take a little over an hour, but the experience of the ride is an adventure in itself. Tell them you are going to Mohammed's and that you want to be taken all the way, otherwise, they have a tendency to dump you at the end of the tarmac road, and it's a good 20 minute walk from there. Just be insistent and they will do it. If you do get dumped at the end of the tarmac, just head toward the beach and walk for about 20 minutes. It's a beautiful walk, and much more straight-forward than following the road all the way. Enjoy!

Room Tip: There is no swimming pool, but then again, the Indian Ocean is about 50 steps from your bungalow. Th...

Matemwe is the perfect beach for those looking for a peaceful place. It's not crowded at all and the beach is beautiful.
Plus, the bungalows are great. Really nice bedrooms, comfortable and roomy. The place has a really nice restaurant for affordable prices and some hammocks right in front of the beach. It's worth every penny and perfect for people traveling on a budget but who still want a nice place to stay.

I spent four nights at Mohammed's bungalow as a solo traveler this August. It was exactly what I was looking for: an inexpensive, quiet refuge on the beach with good snorkeling nearby. It's about an hour from Zanzibar Town and the airport.

The bungalow itself was great: clean, spacious and next to the beach with mosquito nets, ceiling fan, working outlets and a cold shower. (Note: bring soap and shampoo etc. with you!).

There is also a restaurant/bar looking out at the beach with very friendly staff, cold beer and cocktails, special drinks upon request. Breakfast is included and is great; other meals range from 7000-20,000tsh depending on the dish, delicious home-cooked curries and seafood.
I much appreciated the little lending library with novels, cards and board games. Internet is available (slowww) for 2000tsh/use.

The beach itself is lovely for observing village life. Watch locals maintain their fishing dhows and bring in their daily catch. Kids playing all over the place. The one issue (which Mohammed was clear about from the get-go) - I went out to watch the gorgeous sunrise one morning and came upon all the local kids using the beach as a toilet. SOo watch where you step if you're strolling on the public areas. However, especially if you walk south along the beach, the bigger resorts keep the white sand clean and it's quite beautiful.

There are many options along the beach for tours, fishing, snorkeling and diving. The snorkeling is wonderful off Mnemba Atoll.

Overall a really well run business and good value. Mohammed and his family went above and beyond to help me enjoy the beach and brought me with them on a trip to stonetown to explore as well! Well worth the visit.

Room Tip: All the bungalows are pretty well the same.

If you're looking for all the mod cons and comforts, this is not the place for you. But if you want a quiet, gorgeous beach; comfy beds; excellent service; meals cooked from scratch while you wait; a chance to learn mancala from a charming 11-year-old; and some help with booking snorkeling and taxis, this is the place for you. Mohammed and his family are a warm, calm presence, able and willing to help, and our family of four thoroughly enjoyed our four nights there. Enjoyed the price immensely! My only complaint about our experience there relates to the local children's practice of pooping on the beach north of Mohammed's -- but this is not his problem to solve.

Room Tip: All rooms are simple with ceiling fans. Ours had a bare bulb hanging from the ceiling but not all do...

Came to Matembwe for four nights to do some diving. Wanted an inexpensive place to stay as I knew I wouldn't be there much - and this place was awesome! Very affordable but not missing any of the necessities. Right on the beach, a short walk from several dive centres. Private bungalows with mosquito nets and cold water showers. The real stand outs are the service by Mohammad and his family, and the food! The most delicious food for, again, very reasonable prices. Can't recommend it enough. Skip the fancy places and come eat well and hang out with the locals that eat there as well.

Tucked behind a village on a sandy beach of the Indian Ocean, you will find Mohammed's Beach Bungalows.
The grounds are well kept yet have a rustic feel, providing an excellent refuge from the hustle and bustle of Stone Town.
From my private bungalow, I was able to fall asleep by listening to the sound of crashing waves on the beach, and awoke to find myself on a lovely eastwardly-facing beach, perfect for watching sunrises.
The beaches were "littered" with the beautiful, traditional Dhow's, waiting to be captured on photo, and made beach walks so much more rewarding. The beach also had a few hammocks strung up, where you were able to enjoy the ocean and read a book in comfortable shade.
The food and drink selection at the bar were excellent considering how secluded these bungalows were. The seafood menu would change daily based on what the fishermen brought it, and what was available. If you were feeling adventurous for dinner, there was one other resort a short walk away, that allowed outside visitors in for drinks and snacks.
The staff were exceptionally genuine and friendly people. They contributed to the overall outstanding experience at Mohammed's Beach Bungalow's.
I would highly recommend this place to a friend!

Travelling as a couple, we stayed at Mohammed's for four nights. We felt truly welcome in the family environment, and had a lovely time relaxing on the beach, playing cards and enjoying the freshly cooked food - huge pancakes and fresh fruit for breakfast, and fresh catch in the evenings. Be sure to ask for Mohammed's Coconut sauce and Alla Yusria sauce recipes!!

The bungalows are basic and functional but pleasant. The welcome is what makes Mohammed's a good pick, and a solid base for diving and snorkelling at Mnemba Island. The property opens directly onto the beach and has a cool private beach garden, with hammocks and sunbeds provided.

I understand that Mohammed now has a website - http://mohammedsbungalows.wordpress.com/ - and is taking bookings over emails.
