We recently stayed at the Matemwe Lodge after an African Safari in Tanzania. I can not say enough about what a wonderful time we had there. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and clean. We had a plunge pool next to our room, and alternated between the hammock, chaise lounges, and the pool. After that we had scrumptious meals, expertly prepared by their chefs, with fresh fish and vegetables every night. The grounds are beautiful as well. We went snorkeling at the Mnemba Atoll, which I recommend highly. Also had a massage-can't get any better than this!

Room Tip: Ask for room 9 or 10-they have plunge pools. Room #1 may be a bit noisy, as it is next to the bar

We had been traveling for over 12 days on safari before we arrived to Matemwe Lodge for the last leg of our honeymoon trip in East Africa. The staff was superb in ensuring our stay was relaxing and enjoyable. The staff knew our names and checked in on us every day to see if we needed anything. When we returned from our day activities we were greeted with warm smiles and inquiries on how our day was. The food was excellent. All bungalows faced the ocean and the rooms were spacious. The staff was very accomodating. We wanted to spend a day shopping and exploring Stone Town and the package tour was 3 hours. We spoke to Sandy, who said it was no problem and arrange a car and guide to stay with us for as long as we wanted in Stone Town. We were able to stay for a sundowner in Stone Town before heading back to the Lodge. Wonderful staff, wonderful location, wonderful property. Highly reccomended.

We came to Zanzibar for diving. We had some really amazing diving in Zanzibar. With that being said, the coral and the fish were amazing if you get the chance to diversify the dive trips, would recommend it. Plan to go slowly through the dives because they are shallow enough to spend an hour on each dive planning it right. The dive operations are good, but not great even though they say they are 5 star merely because the dive operation does not meet the same standards as the lodging. I suppose when you re used to the service from the lodges, yoou expect the same from the dive operators. they seemed preoccupied with their own conversations and interests rather than assisting the divers, spending a lot of time speaking to each other in local dialect. It would have been nice to learn more about their underwater experiences and sea life in the event that perhaps we would be better prepared for what we should look for and hope to see. The lodge management and staff were very nice and the rooms were great. I feel this is a place you come to dive. It's not really for relaxing at the beach as they really don't have a great beach and the only nice one is next to the village fish operation, and it is a conservative village which might make someone uncomfortable, although we did not feel that way. Prepare to dive, snorkel, kayak or sunbathe, because there's not much more to do than that. Sometimes, that's a good thing. While the resort is beautiful, the fishing village which is right next to it, is not. There is trash everywhere and the village does not care about cleaning it up and is content living in the tossed trash as well as the goats picking through it. The resort and others are trying to do clean ups but apparently it's a lost cause and even incentives by the resorts are short lived in keeping the area clean. I am saying this, because if you are coming for diving, come to this resort, If you are coming to hang out on the beach check out the village, you will be very disappointed. Also, the tides change here, so when you go diving you may leave from the resort, and then have a drive back at a different drop off, or vice versa. Bus rides to the dive pick up are typical often 45 minutes long on tough roads so if you get motion sickness, take something. We had a great time diving, visibility was great, and we even saw a whale shark during our dive, which is very rare. Loved the room, the bathroom was very large and it was great way to wind down and relax. The restaurant staff was great and friendly and everyone very accommodating. I would recommend this place to every diver who wants to experience Zanzibar diving.

Room Tip: Choose room 12 (last one) or close to the private beach shared by the people in the villas (10-12...

We stayed in the matemwe lodge for a week and it was fabulous! The large and clean bungalows have a very big bathroom with shower and bath. From the bungalows (including comfortable hammock) have great views overlooking the reef where Fisherman's boats come and go throughout the day. Several excursions can be booked like game fishing, scuba-diving, Catamaran sailing, massage in the self-owned Spa,Stone town visit, etc..The restaurant serves great food and the staff always welcomes you with a smile! Due to the limited number of rooms and guests this place has a homely and intimate feel to it.

Overall this is an excellent
spot to have a completely relaxed and luxurious holiday!

If you need time to relax before or after a safari this is the place to do it. We spent 5 nights and the time drifted past. Double hammock and couch outside our "hut" encouraged us to while away the hours watching the waves breaking on the reef and the dhows skimming by. Sandy and the team were amazing, arranging a very special anniversary dinner for us - my husband is still talking about the lobster. Getting a massage at the spa listening to waves breaking on the shore it doesn't get much more relaxing then that.

Stayed here for 5 nights at the end of our very busy safari and we were not disappointed.Private cottage overlooking the Indian ocean was fab and to fall asleep and wake to the sound of the ocean was wonderful.Sandy and all the staff were totally switched on to the ethos of the place ie service was attentive but completely unobtrusive and relaxing.nothing was ever too much of a problem.Everything about the place was geared to relaxation but within that there was plenty of activities available and almost anything could be arranged.Loved the food especially the fish[the white snapper was stunning] and the pre dinner cocktails were fab.Reasonably priced wine what more does one want.Great place to stay give it a whirl you will not be disappointed.

Can't think of a better place to wind down after several weeks of safari "rock 'n roll" in Botswana and Tanzania. The stunning absolute shorefront location, white sand beaches, complete privacy of the luxury bungalows all with fabulous views, and the great weather (in June) were standouts for us. This resort is well managed - staff were great , and meals good - could have stayed all day in the restaurant watching the locals at work on the water. There is plenty to do if you are so minded - lots of water based activities, and we would definitely recommend the diving/ snorkelling experience to the atoll nearby. A few steps outside the resort to the local fishing village and school will remind you how lucky we travellers all are, but it is worth doing, and perhaps you can help. We would love to return to Matemwe !
