Reviewed 11 March 2012

We spent 9 days at Melia in february/march.

Our tour (hotel and flight) was booked separetely. Flight was booked on internet, hotel through a travel agency. We found the hotel on internet. The choice of this hotel was based on the fact that they had a big pool and could offer all-inclusive.
We paid 5000 USD for 3 persons/9 nights.

The hotel is nice, the room is nice and the area, pool and gardens were nice. The service from the people working around you (restaurant, poolside, maid, e.g) was of first class.

When it comes to the food and the all-inclusive consept we were VERY disappointed.
We have 25 years of experience from all-inclusive concepts (other Melia hotels included), so we had great expectations to the food (which is always an important part of our vacation).
The all-inclusive concept on this hotel is quite different from other hotels that offer all-inclusive. They have a graded system: Basic, Premium and Level. We have never ever heard about this system before and there was no information about this on the hotel web-site. The only information you get on their website, is the choice between breakfast, half-board and full-board. So, when you book an all-inclusive package; with this information you will be cheated!!
So, quite unaware of this system, we were checked in as ‘Basic’-guests’.

Being a ‘basic’ guest means that you can not order what you want on the menu. Actually, there are many limitations on what you can order. Forget your Pina Colada and Daiquiri. Forget your hamburger and pizza slice at the poolside. You will not get it unless you pay for it. We felt very provoked of this system, as we were not informed about this.

One example. You had only one choice of beer as a ‘basic’-guest. This beer (Safari brand) was always lukewarm. A couple of days they were sold out for Safari, and we were offered beer from ‘Premium’ grade. Always icecold. When they got the Safari in stock again, it was again lukewarm. Coincidently?

There is no beach outside the hotel. You have to take a car. One day we took the car to the beach. At Gabi beach there is a cafe (quite ordinary) with big terrace with sofas and tables.
We found a chair – ready for lunch, but since we were ‘basic’-guests, we were not allowed to sit there. There were NO other people sitting there, and nevertheless we were asked to use the chair and table on the ground. Unbelievable!

The main restaurant is Spices. It needs some renovation. It’s a miserable restaurant. The variety of food was poor. Just a boring buffet. Especially during lunch and dinner. If you have been to an all-inclusive resort before, you will know what we are talking about. The presentation of the food is poor. The food stations looked like a closed counter at an office. It took us one day before we realized that they were making food to order behind those counters.

The main restaurant is also the cafeteria for the management. Every breakfast, lunch and dinner; up to 7 tables were occupied by the management. This is very inappropriate.
The management should find their own room to consume their food.

It’s quite expensive to stay at this hotel and you will not get value for money. Definitely not! The all-inclusive concept at this hotel is not what you expect it to be. We feel us very cheated. We had ABSOLUTELY NO information about this graded all-inclusive concept.

We called the travel agency the day after we checked in. Like us, they had never ever heard about this system.

We will also inform you about that the prices on food are ridiculously high, so you have actually not other choice than what is included in the all-inclusive.

So, you are hereby warned.

And – don’t bring you teenager. It’s a boring place for them. The management has not been thinking om them as guests. Nothing to offer them. What about installing a billiards in the nice Library bar?

Dear SAA_12

Firstly, I want to thank you for choosing us and taking the time to write a review about us. You opinion is very important for us, and you have our commitment, from both the Hotel management and all the staff, that all of your comments will be used to improve our services and make sure that all of our customers have the most pleasant stay with us.
We apologize if our concept of all inclusive did not satisfy your expectations. We are a Resort Hotel with different meal plans such as Bed & Breakfast, Half Board, All Inclusive and All Inclusive Premium, but none of these clients is Basic for us. “The Level” is the Executive level that we offer in many Melia Hotels around the world. In our Hotels includes the Villas with private swimming pool. All the agencies we work with are well aware of the system.

Both all-inclusive include several items in meals and drinks. In the menu of the Pool Bar, we do have Pizza and Burger available for our All Inclusive guests. Apart from it we also offer several other options extra in order to give you more options and make the stay of our guests more enjoyable,
We offer several activities for Teenagers, kids and adults like table tennis, long tennis, beach volleyball, kayaking. All complimentary, all the clients have granted access to all of them so as all the areas. In addition we also offer some chargeable activities like kite surf lessons, parasailing,…

Thank you very much for your comments,. We really try our best to guarantee that all of our customers experiences are satisfying and 100%. We take it in consideration and we will ensure all the agencies provide the right information to the guests, so they can choose properly what can of meal is most suitable to enjoy the experience in Zanzibar.

We hope to see you again

Best regards

A group of 10 of us arrived at the end of February. We only stayed for 3 nights but I certainly wish we had been able to stay for longer. The rooms were clean and the suite was very spacious! The best part of the rooms however was the incredible bathroom which was so enormous, it was easily the size of the bedroom, if not larger. Love the outdoor shower by the way. Although the beach was a golf cart ride away, it wasn't much of a drawback. The golf cart was fairly easy to catch there and it is still set up as part of the hotel. We had a lunch buffet there, laid back in the beach bandas, went kayaking etc. 2 things I felt they needed to work on however is the confusing drinks list (often difficult to decipher what was part of the all inclusive and what wasn't due to a star rating that changed based on the list you looked at), and the promptness with which room service responded to requests. "We're coming just now" doesn't actually mean "just now". It frequently meant "we'll be there in 30 minutes". On the whole however, I would definitely recommend Melia and would return if I could.

My husband and I have just spent two full week at the Melia Zanzibar. What can I say? Hukuna Matata. Our experience of Zanzibar were tainted slightly by circumstances which I might add were out of the hotels control as our baggage was lost and one case took 11 days to arrive (I am sure the hotel managers will now be able to identify who we are now by that description alone). The hotel staff worked hard with me to communicate with the airport and airlines, sometimes on an hourly basis to try and solve our problem. For this I will be eternally grateful. Asante Sana.

The hotel food in the Spice was excellent, a different theme every evening, and always plenty of variety to tempt all tastes.

We spent one evening at the Aqua restaurant, as a treat, for my husbands birthday. What a night to remember. The staff really spoilt us. Excellent food, served al a carte. Finished off the evening with the staff dancing around the restaurant signing Jambo Jambo to my husband for his birthday. Its one he will never forget.

Drink in the Library were always pleasureable. The bartender was friendly and welcomed us as friends.

The Jetty bar was also stunning, looking out to sea on an evening sipping du bois, is my paradise.

Dear Jacquihay;

Of course we do remember you, and we are very happy that finally your suitcase was found and returned to you.

We are very proud that we could be of assistance and help you to find it through our communications and calls with the airport. We always think as if we were in the shoes of our guests and we feel very good when we succeed in helping.

About the birthday of your husband and your comments about the food and bars thank you very much. We are glad that you enjoyed so much. Happy birthday again and hope to see you soon!

Wow wow wow was my reaction to the Private Villa we stayed in overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Staff so very accomadating on arrival and during our stayafter flying back from a Selous safari.
The villa's 20m own infinity pool and terrace area is just so private! Ideal for a private party or function.
The villa's furnishing is luxurious with bedroom suites European standard & with bathrooms to have a ball in. The villa 'butler/driver' was very helpful and friendly as were all the staff.
Any problems were dealt with practically & immediately by a passionate, predominantly European management team, who also had a great sense of humour!
We took splendid breakfast's in the main restaurant and it was a veritable feast of fresh fruits, yoghurts, cheeses, fish, breads and cooked food. Dinner in the a' la carte restaurant was quietly intimate with good service, tasty fresh food & good range of wines.
Thank you very much for a thoroughly relaxing luxurious stay.

Room Tip: If you have the money book the Presidential Villa

Dear michaelTW;

It is always a pleasure to receive good comments of our customers and even more when they come from guests of a Villa that could enjoy the private pool and butler service.

We are flattered with your words and proud that we could get you a “Wow moment” that happens when you see something so impressive as a Villa and the words “wow” slips from your mouth without even realising it. In Melia we work very much to get moments like this to all our clients.

We are looking forward to receive you again soon, meanwhile you can follow us on facebook.com/#!/Melia.Hotels

It's was my first time to Zanzibar , where i have stayed at the Melia Resorts and Spa. I have a very beautiful and unforgetabale memories. The hotel was amazing , specious rooms with a garden veiw ,where you can enjoy seating on your terrasa of your room and serving a cup of coffe early in the morning. The service at the hotel was exelent , and the staff were very helpfull and kind. I have realy enjoyed staiyng on the GABI Beach , and having cold local SAFARI Beer. Its was giving a pleasure listening to the local african band music and serving your dinner, where you could have a option to dance either if you would like, its was a nice entertaiment to the guest , where you can see the happines and smiles on each and everyones faces. For young couples they would have a very nice and romantinc time seating in the night at Jetty Bar and serving a glass of wine , and admire the sea view and feeling the fresh air . I realy like the hotel and i will strongly recomended to every one , specialy for cuples and honymooners.

This superb hotel (ex-kempinski) can only be described in superlatives. In this hotel, where management manages, everything is organised in a perfect way. It is super clean, well located, the staff is perfectly drilled (one should however take into account that we are in Africa and not in a 5 star hotel in Monte Carlo) and of utmost kindness. The food is presented in a well balanced and not too large buffet of excellent quality rather than in large quantity. Some dishes can be called of gastronomic level. The buffet theme varies every day. The rooms are slendidly situated eiter with garden or sea-view. The fitness center is of most modern type.
It is a very quiet hotel where you are not permanently disturbed by yelling animation teams. The principal restaurants as well as the jetty bar and the beach restaurants are of excellent quality, charming surrounding and high comfort.
If some lesser comments could be made they might refer to the somewhat outdated furniture in the rooms (wearing some traces of former violent tourists) and the complicated all-in system on two levels. It might be better to slightly raise the price of the stay and provide for one all-in system.
Without those small comments, the hotel level could certainly go to 6 stars compared to other local resorts and hotels. We can really recommend this hotel which is not too typical, already seen, african style but more a fenshui type of resort.

Room Tip: ask a room with sea view
