“Wonderful holiday ..”
Reviewed 24 July 2014

We had the most special holiday at this resort, we stayed for 10 days. The rooms were lovely, spacious and very comfortable. Huge bathrooms, and we loved the outdoor shower on the ground floor unit. The food was outstanding .. a wonderful variety .. endless! Healthy if you choose to be. Loved being able to choose from a few different restaurants. Seafood was a treat! We were lucky enough to experience a beach barbeque at Gabi beach ... very special evening. Worth taking the all inclusive option .. great variety, food and drinks. The golf carts worked well, the pool area is lovely! Great service all day! So there again a few different places to choose from. The staff and management were amazing. The service was really outstanding .. happy friendly staff .. management visible all day! We did a few trips to Stone Town .. found a reliable Taxi man who also took us to a spice farm and boat trip to Prison Island. Loved Stone Town!! We also did many long runs along the beach, a wonderful way to get out and explore. Felt very safe, local people friendly and hoping to sell tours and curious etc. A wonderful holiday ... A definite must!! Thank you Melia staff and management we would definitely come back!

Room Tip: Ground floor units had outdoor shower .. all rooms good.

My husband and I stayed here for 7 nights during our honeymoon.

The initial start was somewhat disappointing. We had some issue with the bathroom in our first room. We went to the reception to complain about the room. The guy at the reception refused to call the manager in duty. However, when we returned and the manager heard about the issue, we got immediately upgraded from a Terrace Room to a spacious sea-front Suite.

Room was fantastic: clean and spacious. Outside shower was also a nice experience. We got a bottle of sparkling wine, some biscuits and some fruit.

Pool area was nice: infinity pool, sea view, etc. Gabi Beach should definitively be visited when staying at the Melia Zanzibar. White sand, amazing cocktails and delicious food.

Furthermore, the buffet in the Spices Restaurant was good: a lot of variety and one evening there was even grilled lobster and crab. Jetty lounge serves delicious Asian food in the evening (upon reservation). Very romantic to have dinner there. We also booked a 'romantic dinner' on the rooftop of the Aqua Restaurant. Had an amazing 7-course dinner, with sparkling wine, white wine, tuna, lobster, crab, etc. for only 65 USD per pax.

Personnel was extremely friendly. Management is clearly involved and committed, which is quite exceptional.

Great hotel with vers SARL welcome. Rooms are spacious, very comfortable and extremely quite. Also enjoyed the large bathroom.
All restaurants provided great food, especially loved the fish restaurant.
Beach is very nice, a bit far away from the main hotel but the shuttle service with the karts works well.

Room Tip: Best is to go for the villas on the sea front

The hotel has excellent conditions and very nice staff. I just stayed 7 nights at the hotel and everything was just fine, however I still believe there's some room for improvement to make it even better.

Location:
If you want to know the more of the Zanzibar capital, then this hotel is a little far to go there very often, however it offers an amazing beach near a small fishermen village that the local people would gladly take you (for a small tip, of course). We opted for a half day tour to Stone Town and we're glad we did, but I believe that was enough, I'd rather visit another area or do another sea activity (definitely recommend snorkeling).

Food and Services:
The food was wonderful on every occasion. There's always plenty of option with local and international dishes. All the staff were very helpful and there's always someone around to (or try to) help you or serve you some of the nice drinks and food that they have. In this regard the only thing I can suggest is to focus a little more on training. Although they're always around and trying they're best to be helpful, most of the times the order was wrong the first time or we were simply misunderstood, as much that we called it the Zanzibar way, first response is always "Yes!", and then the second time is "Hakuna Matata" (you all know this one).

Example:
"Can we have 4 Mint Greens?"
"Yes!"
--- 10 min later --
4 Green teas arrive.

This might be related with the country itself, as learned there, English is mandatory in the school, but most of the people only learn the minimum to get by, which is not necessarily a problem as long as the hotel provides some improvement program.

By the way, if you choose this hotel and look for a nice alcoholic cocktail, ask for a Mint Green(non-alcoholic) and add Havana Club. We named it Yes Cocktail!, in honor of the staff as explained previously ;). All the normal cocktails are available as well (mojito, marguerita, etc), but this is still the most unique and refreshing :)

The hotel's website mentions kayak and snorkeling available for free. Only one kayak was available when we asked and then we waited almost 45min until they found the term of responsibility agreement to be signed, I guess the target market doesn't care that much for this. As for snorkeling I was expecting to have some free snorkeling equipment available to use while at the beach, but they don't have it, apparently the site just mentions that you can do it if you bring your own equipment, which is basically the same as saying that you can swim at their beach :P
The WIFI is free but only available in the common areas of the hotel, however the speed was exasperating at times when more people would be around (lunch, before/after-dinner, during world cup matches). I myself enjoyed that no internet was available at the beach and rooms, but that's just a personal preference.

We got the All Inclusive package and we found that it is quite enough, there's a couple of drinks and dishes outside the package but nothing that you can't leave without or can pay for a couple of times if you want it.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedbacks and opinions about your recent stay at Melia Zanzibar.
We do highly value our guests’ comments in order to constantly improve our quality of service we are striving to offer.

The resort is situated in the heart of Kiwengwa, where one of the nicest beach on the island is located, approximately 45 minutes from Stone Town.

Gabi Beach is our “private” beach (actually no beach are private in Zanzibar, but due to our location we have no outsiders coming to our beach). The place is set to relax, chill out. You can play beach volleyball and enjoy our 5 kayaks available for free. Please accept my excuse if you had to wait to get a kayak. Signing our form is just a quick formality.

Our dive center organizes daily snorkeling activities in appropriate and beautiful different location in the island. Except a mistake from my side, we do not advertise for free snorkeling, therefore I will be grateful if you could let me know where have you found this information.

We are pleased to know that you enjoyed our wide selection and variety of food in all our outlets.
Few of our new local employees have a low English level, therefore we are providing daily English lesson to them, refresh for the others and give them the chance to enrich their knowledge.

As per the cocktails, we do provide a rich bar menu, with the main International blends and our bartenders are able to satisfy any special requests in accordance to each specific preference.
Indeed the WIFI is a challenge on the island but we are to fix the matter with a new provider to improve the speed within the coming weeks.

Thank you for your comment on our All Inclusive package been value for money as definitely it is. Our Premium Package giving access to further privileges.

Once again, thank you very much for your comments. We look forward welcoming you again in one of our Melia Hotels International properties.

Kind regards,

The resort itself and the overall experience is amazing... The place is like heaven. We would have loved to extend our stay but had to get back to real life. Me and my wife had the opportunity to stay in the villa at The Level and the Romantic Pavillion and they were both amazing. Great hospitality and management. The food at Gabi Beach was amazing!!! Would definitely recommend Melia Zanzibar to everyone!

Melia is situated in a very large area on a cliff that gradually goes down to the beach. Privacy is secured. The environment is absolutely unique, because it merges gorgeous colourful vegetation with the white sand; staff is excellent, very kind; very pleasant German junior manager; food exquisite, large variety and fresh. Big rooms with all you need. Lovely natural aquarium at the bottom of the jetty, where it is easy to snorkel. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: My preference goes to the floor rooms because have the garden at hand and if you have kids it gives...
