“Excellent relaxing spot in Zanzibar”
Reviewed 25 February 2014

Bellevue was a wonderful experience. The management team are Dutch - and the service is spectacular. Ellen was extremely helpful, booked the Safari blue and helped me with scuba bookings. The food at the restaurant is excellent as well. The breakfast is included, and is very satisfying. Lunch and dinner menu's change constantly, and are always varied, and tasty. The weekly swahili dinner and BBQ are not to be missed! The place is slightly off the beaten path, but this means the location is quiet, and you don't have to worry about crime, etc. You have no shopping nearby - unless you take a taxi or bus. This is a great place to sit on the beach, read, scuba, etc - just relax.
Keep in mind, it NEVER seems to cool off here, and I don't believe they have A/C here. We stayed in the jungle room, which has two walls removed to allow more airflow - very nice!

Room Tip: The jungle room has no walls, and lets in a cool breeze. Feels like a tree house!

What does one do on an island where there is so much to do? The helpful staff of Bellevue has helped us make excellent choices how to make the best of our stay on this beautiful island. Luxury choices however, for Bellevue is located almost on Zanzibars famous white palm beaches. They obviously enjoy their role as hoteliers and enthousiastically welcome and serve you. We experienced the location as strategically positioned for trips to Paje, Stone Town and the Michamvi Peninsula.

For staff leaders Ellen and Arjen: thank you so much for your help and keep up the good work! Hope we return soon.

We stayed one week in Bellevue. It's a charming, homey, cosy and very nice place. Our room (jungle bungalow) had no walls, and when it was windy it was so comfortable to sleep. Otherwise only two fans could give us a rest from this hot and humid tropical climate. Dining area is full of pillows and different cosy things like fresh flowers, shells, rattan lamps and etc. Loved eating there and just sitting with the book or checking internet. Breakfast is good, however we lacked for fruits, so we always brought smth else in addition to their plate. Staff is welcoming and friendly, the managers Airen and Ellen are very attentive to each guest. All in all a nice place close to the beach. We visited several hotels around, and Bellevue was the most charming among them!

We spent two nights a Bellevue guesthouse. Its about an hour from Stone Town in a taxi, located 50m up from the beach on a ridge nestled in a little forest. Nice quiet and private atmosphere. Not right on the sand but away from the crowds. Easy access to a beautiful beach, they have beach beds too. Restaurant and bar are great, serving seafood and nice cocktails, almost everything is homemade and healthy, all delicious. Great dining and lounging area. Staff is wonderful, friendly, welcoming and helpful. Lots of activities are available, a little pricey, but worth it to go exploring. I recommend arranging your own airport transfer, but hotel will do if for you for $50 each way and they will get you someone very reliable and safe. Rooms are rustic/basic, but clean and comfortable with ocean view (we stayed in a standard room). I highly recommend Bellevue!!

Room Tip: bathrooms are "open" - so if you are coming with your partner you should be comfortable wi...

We stayed five days in Northeast at a big resort, so thought we would come down to Bwejuu for another sort of experience. The managers of the property, Arjan and Ellen, were lovely and helpful hosts, and the staff were very friendly and attentive. They really made our stay extra special and nice.
The beach was about 100m away, down the stairs and around the corner from an obnoxious villa built in front of the property. They had two thatched umbrellas and a few sunbeds, which you would bring the mattresses for from the property. The beach itself was just okay so one day we took a long walk over to another town, Paje, where there was impressively white sandy beach.
The food was delicious so we ate all our meals at the guest house (breakfast was included).
They had a BBQ night (Wed) and we were in heaven! The meat, fish and veggies on skewers were cooked to perfection and the side dishes were in abundance (and again delicious!).
In terms of accommodation, all rooms were fully booked so we stayed in room #5.
It was very clean, neat and well maintained, but unlike other rooms, the windows did not face the water so there was no breeze coming in. We slept with the fan on (no AC) but it got a bit hot on warm nights. (And make sure to bring your shower gel, shampoos, and other toiletries as they are not provided by the guest house.)
The dining area was so wonderful and homey. There were comfy couch corners on both side of the room where you could hang out with a book or playing games. They have wi-fi for $5 a day/$10 a week as well.
As a bonus to me, the big dog lover, they had two sweetest guard dogs on the property. One of them was abused by the villagers so he was a bit nervous at times, but after some gentle efforts he warmed up. Both dogs were so wonderfully sweet and I was very thankful that these pooches were taken such good care of by the property and the staff.
Overall we highly recommend this place for people looking for an easy going, chilled, cozy experience!!

My husband and I stayed in the Jungle Bungalow at the Bellevue Guesthouse for 3 nights after a long African adventure, and it could not have been more magical. We were exhausted from a long 2 weeks of safari, and climbing kilimanjaro, and it far exceeded our expectations. It is a bumpy hour drive from Stonetown but when the tree part and reveal the hanging lanterns of the main dining/bar area, it was like a dream. We cannot say enough wonderful things about it. The food was great - be sure to stay over a Wednesday when they throw a family style BBQ - it was amazing. We had friends who were staying in Paje down the beach come and join us that night and we all had a blast.
Our Jungle Bungalow was magical. No real walls along the front, only curtains to close, so you can hear the waves lapping and see the sun streaming in, in the morning. They are a sustainable lodge (which I love) but that means they only change the sheets every other day and they heat their water with solar power so it take a bit to warm up (but I would much rather stay in a place like this than in one that leaves a huge carbon footprint).
Arian and Ellen are taking care of the place while the usual owners are back in Holland with a new baby, and they are just fantastic as well. So welcoming and kind and even invited us along to a party a few beaches down with them one night. We also were able to set up stand-up-paddleboarding in the Mangroves at sunset and scuba driving through the hotel.
We spent each morning on the beach watching the tide roll out, and reading our books, then packed our afternoons with activities.
I really pray we can return to this beautiful place and hope that everyone has as incredible a time as we did.

Room Tip: Stay in the jungle bungalow - it was amazing!

Bellevue is a true gem! For couples and single travellers alike. They even have a special room for newlyweds!

The staff is great and helpful, the food is good, the rooms are clean and free of mosquitoes. I have travelled plenty and it's hard to find a better guesthouse than Bellevue anywhere in the world.

Bellevue is a great base to explore Zanzibar. The location, a short carride away from any bars or more busy places like Paje Beach gives you the sense of a second home away from home.

A must is the weekly Swahili dinner. As you arrive at the guesthouse, you´ll find a few fish on a stick, slowly smoked untill perfection above a campfire. All the food of this shared dinner with all the guests is fantastic. To top it off: an afterdinner-campfire on the beach.

I just fell in love with the place and the people that work that. After my first visit, I just had to go back. Not only for kitesurfing on Zanzibar but also for the Bellevue and its staff.

Room Tip: There are different rooms to choose from. The jungleroom looks great but I never stayed there. The s...
