Rooms are basic but convenient. I got a good price for a single room in low season (20$). The hotel is very close to the beach (1 minute walking) and it is a good place to relax and meet other travellers if you are alone. Breakfast is ok, and the restaurant also offer meals for lunch and dinner, however the restaurant it is expensive for what they give. Staff is very friendly and they create a warm atmosphere. Good reggae music is played during all day.

The hotel is located in Bwejuu and we used to go to Paje because the beach is nicer there, so we rented a bike and rode during 5 minutes to reach Paje. If this is unconvinient for you, you should consider to stay in Paje. Regarding the tides, it's true you can't swim anytime you want but it happens in the whole east of Zanzibar.

Anywhere you stay I totally reccomend to do snorkling in the "blue lagoon", it is as nice as Mnemba and less than half price.

If you're looking for somewhere to relax, Mustapha's Place is THE best!
The staff are lovely, the room and bathroom was clean, with a good mosquito net over the bed. There was a fire every night, and board games there, and the beach was just across the road, where you could see amazing stars!
The 3 nights that we were there, we just stayed at the hotel in the evenings, there was no need to go anywhere else for us, the food was amazing there, and there was a bar. Other guests that were there did go out to other places, which weren't far away.
The closest hotels were over a 5 minute walk down the beach, so the place isn't packed with other tourists, even in the daytime.
If you go to Zanzibar, make time to stay at Mustapha's Place!

I stayed at Mustapha's place in late June with four friends and we absolutely loved it. Mustapha's isn't located on the beach (which is only 1 minute away), but this doesn't matter as the owner has gone to great lengths to make the guest house a perfect place to hang out and relax. The attention to detail is amazing. Everywhere you look you see beautiful pieces of art, shells, weaved baskets etc. There are comfy hammocks to relax on as well as a large futon. The rooms are clean, and spacious. Every morning they serve a delicious breakfast of eggs, roti, fresh fruit, and fresh juice. Mustapha and his staff are lovely and very helpful. I will definitely be back to Mustapha's one day.

After spending 14 days volunteering in Moshi and few days in Stone Town it was a pleasure to arrive to the serenity of Mustapha's. We stayed here for four days at the beginning of April so the place was really quiet; only three other guests apart from our group.
The staff at Mustapha's are what make the place that little bit special, they went out of the way to ensure we had a comfortable and pleasant time in Bwejuu and made sure we had lots of fun along the way. Our days were spent relaxing on the beach nearby or swinging on the hammocks reading. Then our nights were spent dining at the restaurant and drinking cocktails around the campfire. Plenty of konyagi was consumed and much dancing took place.
We hired bikes one of the days and one of the staff took us along the beach to go for a brilliant snorkelling experience; note that the bike ride is hard work along on the sand!
Throughout our time there, one of the group was very ill and all of the staff went out of their way to help her, even driving us along to a local doctor for her to be checked out.
The only thing we had an issue with was our bathroom, the toilet didn't flush too well which wasn't ideal. Our beds were huge and the mosquito nets were all hole free; such an improvement on other hotels.
Mustapha's is a must place to stay if you're in Bwejuu, even if it's just for one night!

I stayed twice this year 2013 in Mustapha's place.
This is simply my favourite place in Zanzibar, in Tanzania, in Africa and yes maybe in the world I visited.

You can live there at our own rythm. Share if you want to share. Relaxing if you need it.
There is a true natural mystic in this place.
Obviously the beach looks like paradise.
But it is definitely the paradise when you take time to meet the people managing the place.
I will definitely come back and spend all my time of vacations in this place!

Come there, wake up and live...

Absolutely no sign in the village the place is located, the hotel isn't located on the road either so hard to find. You literally have to just wander around asking locals (who don't necessary speak your language) where it is.

The hotel is in a nice little compound but a bit too natural in ways, lots of ants everywhere - including hundreds in one of our beds, maybe just bad luck though.

Restaurant is very expensive, ten times local prices if you just wander outside and go to cafe.

Just a one minute walk to the beach. The beach is nice but not ideal for swimming as the water's only 50 cm deep for hundreds of metres out to sea, so you can crawl in the water but not swim.

No wifi but you can use owners laptop to check mail.

Great breakfast, yum yum yum.

Room Tip: Check for ants and make sure net is relatively hole free. Just a couple of bathrooms (shared), take...

We stayed @Mustaphas place for a total of 5 nights. Previous reviews describe it pretty accurately: it is a really laid back place and some of the sea food curries are divine, its set 50 metres back from a lovely beach, the staff are all really friendly and it's undoubtedly good value for bwejuu.

Having said that we did think there were a couple of things worth noting;

The rooms are small and pretty basic (loud ceiling fan and not a lot of storage space)
The bar drinks are slightly overpriced, when you consider the price of the rooms.
Our room was not cleaned over the 5 nights we were there
No wifi (no big deal but nice to have)

Anyway overall definitely a 4 out of 5.
