We stayed at Makuti during high season, a time I dread but it had to be. Happily, the four nights and five days spent with owners Mabel and Peter could not have been better. While there were a number of guests, we never felt anything but calm, relaxed and able to have privacy. Mabel, Peter and the staff are great and by the end of our stay they felt like family. The bungalow was comfortable, clean, and welcoming. My favorite place was the upstairs "lounge", a perfect place for reading and watching life along the shore. The beach is perfect for swimming when the tide is in and for watching coastal life when the tide is out. It could not be better, tide out or in, for jogging or taking long walks. The food was tasty, with sizable portions. We were so relaxed that we had no desire to leave the premises to eat elsewhere, however there are numerous places along the beach to eat should one chose to do so. Also the village of Bwejuu offers a friendly glimpse into Swahili coastal life, A return visit to Makuti is a must.

We stayed here last December. After booking at Mustapha's and having a bad experience there we stumbled across Makuti and after speaking to Peter quickly relocated!
Lovely clean reasonably priced bungalows, right on the beach. Though variety started to become an issue after the 4th day, the food was delicious and the restaurant was the perfect spot to get out of the heat, relax and enjoy the ocean breezes. The staff were all extremely accommodating and made our stay very comfortable, would definitely stay again!.
Gracias Peter, hasta la proxima!

I think there was a change of management. I have been in the restaurant after the good reviews. But the food was awfull. The menu was very simple 6 dishes and the prizes were very high compared with the other restaurants in the same area.
We ordered: A plate of calamari ( only 7 small pieces with a bit of rice) 10$; it was like gum
. Grilled fish and chips (the fish portion was like a quater of a small fish slice) 10$.
I am sending this review because I am really disapointed. And I wish no one else makes the same mistake.
I spent a month in Zanzibar and this is the worst restaurant I've ever.

Absolutely everything you could want. Chose Makuti because the reviews on trip advisor made it sound like a perfect plase to sit and read and relax and it totally delivered. Prisitine beach, great food, really quiet - only two other guests there over the Easter long weekend. The staff was super-helpful in arranging tours, etc.

Being able to watch the sunrise from bed was a nice added bonus.

This was just a wonderful place to relax. It is so quiet and peaceful and the owner Peter is great. This may just have been our room but the design of the bed was flawed so that mosquitoes could fly underneath the netting because the bed has 4 high wooden posts on its corners. These mosquitoes had a feast on us and it was hared to sleep. What I recommend is that you pull the net off the square wooden design if you can and then tuck it under the mattress. I'm not sure this can be done. Ideally, they should have a hook in the ceiling above the center of the bed (like Jambo Inn in Dar es Salaam) and have the mosquito net hang from that hook. That way, the net can be tucked under the corners of the mattress.

They did not have mosquito spray so another option is to bring your own spray and spary the room around 7pm.

Great seafood and nice beach. I highly recommend this place.

Our second stay at Makuti was a relaxing as the first. Welcoming staff, lovely beach, delicious meals, and quality sleep. Perfect for a quiet weekend of reading in hammocks or a romantic getaway.

Room Tip: It's hard to go wrong!

We stayed here for five nights in the last week of February, and could not have been happier. The location is ideal -- literally you walk out the door from your bungalow in the morning and out onto the sand, with the beach immediately in front of you. The owners and their staff are extremely helpful and welcoming, and helped us arrange a spice tour, an afternoon in Stonetown, rental bikes, the Blu Safari excursion, and transportation for all of it -- all at very reasonable prices. The food in the restaurant was wonderful, the Kilimanjaro beer is great and cheap, and the entire experience was total relaxation -- exactly what we were looking for. While beautiful, Makuti and the surrounding area are definitely on the rustic end of the scale -- the restaurant has a sand "floor", cows from the local villages frequently passed through the beach, and the power was out more than half of the time we were there. None of this was a problem for us, and frankly, being forced to completely disconnect made it all the more relaxing. There is no internet access available, but a few days into our trip, we were able to get wifi by walking two minutes up the beach to a nearby hotel that had a larger restaurant/lounge, and great cocktails. We ended up eating dinner there a few nights as well, which was a nice change from eating every meal in the same place -- however tasty they were!

Cost-wise, the most expensive part of the trip was the plane ticket from Rome to Dar. Accommodation in a private bungalow (pitiful water pressure, but cleaned daily and certainly comfortable, especially with the little porch out front and a beer!) for two people over 5 nights with breakfast included cost us 300 USD. A beer was 3000 shillings -- just under 2 USD, and most of the dishes in the restaurant were 10-15,000 shillings -- so not more than 10 dollars. We paid 45 USD one-way for the transfers back and forth to the Zanzibar airport, which was easy to set up by email in advance. (A word to the wise... we were shocked when we bought the Malari pills the weekend before we left and had to spend 170 euro on enough for both of us to take everyday while we were there and then continuing for a week after we returned. Considering the mosquitos though, we were glad to have spent the money.)

Can't wait to go back! Next time, we will probably try renting a car to explore the rest of the island, and will definitely try to spend more than just one day out on a boat.
