“Great location good atmosphere and delicious food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 December 2008

My husband and I needed a peaceful sunny place to spend the last week of 2008, away from everything yet in a great place on a reasonable budget. Echo beach Hotel answered it all! The family managed beach resort gave us the best escape! The hotel is located in a lovely long sandy beach, quiet and tranquil. The rooms are lovely the place has a simple and very welcoming design where Sue and Andrew where there with whatever request we had from a romantic Breakfast in the room terrace to a lift to Stone town;)
We booked a full week on half board and the food was delicious… most of the days we stayed in for lunch as well to try more of the local chef recipes.

  • Liked — location and atmosphere
  • Disliked — we coud only see the sunrise and was no way to see the sunset from this area...

Recently spent 5 nights at Echo Beach with my mum and sister to celebrate a birthday. Its difficult to not simply repeat all the very justified high praise which comes before this review.

Sue is a fantastic host, and went out of her way on numerous occasions to ensure that a great holiday became fantastic. Andrew has a good warped sense of humour, but importantly sticks to what he clearly does best - putting plate after plate of amazing food in front of you. That said, I'm sure a large part of the quality is down to the most amazing flavoursome selection of seafood and exotic fruit he has as its disposal. The drinks are good value, and there are some great cocktails - try a Dawa!

My favourite host, however, was Clyde (the dog) - my mum has a general 5ft rule when it comes to canines, but by the end of the holiday had Clyde in her arms...or actually vice versa - he's huge!

The rooms are really nice - basic and clean with great views. Comfy beds and big balconies. The beach is beautiful and deserted. The tide does go out a long way, but only for half the day and thats what the lovely pool is for. When the tide is in, the water is crystal clear and as warm as a bath.

Definately ask Sue about having lunch at Rocky Point...I guarentee this will be the most unique restaurant location you have ever dined in!! Also, get a massage as they are very good.

Only things that could be improved are...
1. A little more consistency with hot water in the showers
2. I think some work still needs to be done regarding structure and pricing of Echo Beach snorkling/diving trips. But this venture is still in its infancy, and so sure will come good.

Overall an amazing trip - thank you Sue and Andrew - know that this place will soon be unbookable as its glowing reputation spreads.

Would recommend you add a couple of days on the end of your trip in Stone Town - as there is a little more action here and shows you the other side (both culturally and physically) of Zanzibar.

My fiance and I had been apart for a month as he toured other parts of Africa, and Echo beach was the perfect place for our reunion.
Our villa was to die for. Beautifully decorated, clean, an incredible view and a veranda that you can sit and watch the day drift away on. The airconditioner was heaven sent, and once we learned to push the button on the wall to heat up the shower there was more than enough room for two in there. Even in the rainy season we had mostly sun, and it felt as if we had the entire beach to ourselves with the placed booked up. Privacy! Endless white sand, and crystal clear, calm water to lounge in.
The staff was so helpful and friendly, even the dry sense of humor from the owner was fun to laugh about. Their dogs were such a welcoming site from missing our own at home. Dinner was great, and honestly it was the best food we had while in Africa.

We stayed at Echo Beach for 5 days and our overall impression was that it was good, but not great.
The accommodation was wonderful- the cabins are lovely and very comfortable (we loved room 9). The staff was helpful and the owners are hands on- which is really great!

However, the location is far from Stone Town- which means that if you wish to visit the town, it is easily an hour's drive and through guard posts and at times some hassle. It is not inexpensive either- we payed $50 USD to get there and back. We had booked a pick up from the airport through the hotel when we arrived, but no one came, so we took a taxi instead which was $60 USD.

Reserving here was difficult as we had to chase after them to respond to our emails- the phone never seemed to work.

Once there, the setting is lovely, however, unless you are looking for a place to rest and rest only, there is not much to do. Swimming in the ocean is not great - low tide makes it impossible and you need plastic shoes(crocs, ex) to protect your feet.

The food is passable, but not the gastronomic experience the website had us believe.

Overall the price is very reasonable- the staff are nice and if you are going for a rest- its lovely.

We were looking for relaxation after our safari and found a little bit of paradise.

We expected good food, a comfortable room, sandy beaches and a beautiful sea and we were not disappointed.

Echo beach has rooms for about 20 guests in detached rooms (most single storey) that look out over the Indian ocean and set in small but beautiful surroundings. The atmostphere is very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. It was clear that some of the staff are fairly new to working in hotels and there were some communication difficulties but this was more than made up for by their charm and the desire to please.

The meals were wonderful and surpassed our expectations. The room was beautifully decorated, very comfortable with a great walk in shower. I would not hesitate to recommend a stay at Echo Beach - we had a wonderful time.

Beautiful bungalows, attention to detail is amazing - it's like the East meets Laura Ashley.
Food is fantastic (the main reason we chose this place).
Very friendly staff.
Exactly what you want from a Zanzibar beach break - PERFECT.

Echobeach Hotel is a lovely quiet place on the East coast of Zanzibar. Sue and Andrew are very nice and very helpful should you need anything. There is room for just over 20 people and that makes it a lovable place. Almost all individual houses. The sea is great at high tide, and the pool at low tide. Not much going on at night. Just remember US$ is what you should bring but no bills older than the year 2000. And Visa will cost you 50$ (100$ for Americans)
I recommend this place for a good relax.
