We stayed 4 nights in Jan 2011. Make sure you negotiate the price We stayed in the beach front bungalows for $80 the couple next door was paying $70 and the couple below $100 for the same type of room.
Pros: Beautiful view from the rooms on the beach, excellent food with different menu options everyday (it takes 1-2 hours to be served, so order in advance...), Peaceful, romantic
Cons: The water is nice for swimming only in the morning (then there is low tide and in the evening the water is warm like in a Japanese bath). Windy in the afternoon. A bit overpriced for what they offer but try to negotiate. Far away from anywhere which is the case for all hotels in the south east side (45 min drive from stone town)

Spent two days there 2 weeks ago. I stayed in a ground level bungalow.
It was clean and spacious, beds were uncomfortable but it is Zanzibar. Overpriced a little considering what you can find up and down the beach. The beach is not the greatest on this side of the island. Tide is out most of day. Better for tanning and relaxing.
The food was surprisingly great but very little variety. Same thing different sauce.
The restaurant staff and manager are great but the maids harass you for massages and what not. Security guys scared us. Couldn't even sit on our patio at night.
First night one guy was hiding behind a tree watching us and the next night a different guard asked for a smoke and took our pack.
Not even positive they were security both nights because they are in plain clothes.
Either they need security or put their security guards in the same shirt so guests are aware of whose staff and who is not. Left the next day.

It is very small resort, only few bungalows. Some of them has two levels (with roof room). Everything is solid and clean. Becouse of distance from StoneTown you must order you dishes day before, but food is very good. Place is very silent (only sea waves) and romantic. Definitly not for beach crazy people.

We stayed a Evergreen as part of our honeymoon and we loved the place. The bungalows are quite basic I suppose, but I guess it depends what youre used to. We stayed in an upstairs room which i thought was really sweet, the room was reallyspacious and the veiw from the balcony was great, with comfy furniature to chill on with a cocktail. The way the light came intot the room in the morning was lovely, the sunrise through the wodden walls etc.
Everyday the bed was made up nicely with flowers scattered around, a romanitc touch for us! We had no probelm with mosquitos or the heat, we had moved here from another place along the beach where we had got bitten to hell and had been too hot, so Evergreen was a relief after that!

The restaurant was lovely, really nicely decorated, the food choice isnt overwhelming, but what you would expect for a little island place. I had about 5 different types of seafood while I was here though, so cant really complain! The staff were always friendly and helpful too.

Most of all we just liked not wearing any shoes for 3 days, padding out of our little bungalow everyday right on to the beach, relaxing on one of the loungers and whiling the day away reading, chatting and with little swims at high tide. Evenings spent sitting on the swing under the stars sipping cocktails. Lush.

We stayed at evergreen for 5 days, biggest problem was sweating at the nite time(synthetic mattresses bad choice for Zanzibar).Second problem- low tide every day and sea weed all over the place. So, if you are after beach holidays, that isn't the place.
The best beaches are found in northern side, top of the Zanzibar, with practically no low tide effect.
The food was nice, but menu was almost the same for that time that we where there.
In the same area of Bweju beach upper north, you could find much cheaper place for same quality.

Evergreen is not a place for those of you looking for a comfortable vacation - rather, it is quite basic in a lot of its amenities.
There are downstairs and upstairs rooms, most with private bathrooms. We stayed in one of the upstairs rooms as it was supposed to be cooler at night. These upstairs rooms are made out of palmtree leaves without proper doors or windows.
Although this does allow for air to move, it also allows for free entry of all sorts of bugs. There is a mosquito net in the room which has multiple holes and is very difficult to position so that it actually covers the whole bed. The nights are quite tough - we were kept awake for hours every night because of the mosquitos and had lots of bites, despite insect repellent and mosquito net. At night, you could hear rats running around on the roof.
The bed was not comfortable.
The restaurant wasn't very enjoyable. Coffee is instant only, breakfast is included and very basic.
The sunbeds on the beach are very basic, and it is often more comfortable to lie on a towel in the sand.
Taxi rides to the airport are about USD 50, to Stone Town back and forth USD 80.
Overall, for the price of the rooms, we certainly expected more - and I felt like it is definitely overpriced for what you get.
