“Poor value for money !!”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

I really regret to have only read the very last comments on Tripadvisor before going to Dohw Inn. I have just seen the comment written by "Time2FlyNow" dated January 9, 2013 when I came back from Zanzibar and I 100% agree with his comment. The hotel is situated 200m behind the beach and surrounded by very high walls. Not really what the website is trying to show ... When you look at the hotel website, it is like the hotel is on the beach. Actually you can see the ocean only from the 1st floor restaurant.
"Going to the beach we first thought that the way was a joke. You have a narrow, maybe 1 meter wide way between two disgusting walls that are at least 5 meter high.". The response from the hotel management is also wrong as 10 months later, the walls are still there and nothing was done from the hotel side to make it nicer. The walls are neither nicely covered nor painted.
On Hotel management side, it is clearly the worst hotel we haven't even gone to since we arrived in Tanzania in 2006. In short, we staid at Dhow Inn 4 nights, we asked the staff many times to see the manager but we have been told that there was no manager. Then we asked to see the owner (Marc) as we knew he was staying at the hotel but he never showed up.
It took 24 hours before we could receive shampoo. According to the staff it is not in the hotel procedure to provide shampoo to the guests. WE should have brought it !!! We also thought it was a joke but unfortunately it was not.
Breakfast service was a disaster and completely disorganized !
The restaurant menu was also a joke. They could not offer what was on the menu, like mango or mint, simple things that we could find in all other restaurant in Paje. We have many examples that we could share but be aware that this hotel is not managed as it should be in that category of hotels.
The other comments are probably coming from tourists who have not seen other hotels in Zanzibar.

Staying here now and the place is quite nice with a private beach and beautiful setting inside the hotel. Unfortunately I cannot recall the last time I had food this bad in my life. Half the reason I travel is for the food and this place was a complete let down in that category. Last night's meal was a tough, dry and tasteless piece of lamb over some couscous and a disgusting undercooked crab risotto. The crab soup had the same consistency as water and the actual crab was nowhere to be found. All that cost $60. We figured they couldn't really mess up eggs and sausage so we decided to give it another go at breakfast this morning. We were wrong. The bread they brought out was quite good and the Spanish omelette wasn't bad either. However, when I cut into the sausage I for sure thought someone had opened up and trash dumpster near my face. I've never heard of or smelled a sausage that smelled this bad which why it took me a few minutes to realize that the smell was coming from my food. I ate some of it before realizing this and it tasted worse. My wife tried some and she had to spit it out. Luckily there seem to be some restaurants on the beach where we will try our luck from now on. Don't come here for the food. In fact avoid it if you can. The hotel is pretty, even though the walk to the beach entails going down an ugly little alley. The service is great in usual Tanzanian style and everyone is extremely polite and helpful.

We last stayed at the Dhow Inn a couple of years ago and were amazed at the scale and quality of their remodelling when we returned recently. This place stands head and shoulders above the neighbouring resorts. Great rooms - comfortable and spacious with a great bed - excellent breakfast with a stunning sea view, happy & helpful staff and amazing food, especially on their Grill night - try the coconut rice. If you want a real African break with the luxury from home, Dhow Inn is a sure bet!

Our taxi driver from Stone Town drove us to Dhow Inn ($40) and we had found paradise. The staff were welcoming and friendly and the atmosphere was very relaxed. We felt safe here!

Our room was nice, comfortable and clean – close to the pool as well which was fab! The rooms also have a little terrace which was handy for hiding in the shade and hanging out our sandy towels. The whole area and plants were always being cleaned, watered and well kept throughout our stay.

Breakfast was delicious with lovely sea views – a good start to the morning. Our days mainly consisted of a walk along the amazing white sandy beach, relaxing, having lunch at one of the restaurants on the beach (our favourites were Ocean Restaurant and Ndame Lodge Restaurant), a swim in the pool in the afternoon and then more relaxing! We stayed at the hotel bar/restaurant in the evening as we weren’t sure if it was wise to wander round town at night.

We did take a trip to Jozani National Park, the sea turtle conservation centre and the butterfly centre which were all really interesting. We also visited the Rock Restaurant which had some stunning views.

Our only suggestions for improvements would be to display an exchange rate, when we first changed our dollars the rate was 1.6, but then the next day we changed money from someone else and the rate was 1.5 – said I got a better rate the day before and was just told it wasn’t true. Having a display would clear up any confusion.

The excursions rate book needs updating, between booking a trip and paying for it the next day we were told it had gone up by $5. It’s not much but still a bit of a surprise! If you pay for any trips before check-out keep a receipt (with the activities listed) as our excursions showed as still outstanding on our bill.

The evening menu seemed quite fancy but could have a more traditional menu – more curries & spicy dishes please :-)

We would definitely recommend the lovely Dhow Inn!

Room Tip: Request a bungalow near the pool!

food fantastic. place really nicely done up with lovely gardens, funky pools and well equipped nicely prepared spacious rooms. staff friendly and helpful and overall stay v good. only downsides are rooms a litt close together fir my liking (but this quite common in beach resort hotels) and the problem cased by the clearly very unpleasant neighbouring landowner whose attempt to damage dhow inns business with construction of wall should not be allowed to succeed. also worth noting they were good with our little 5 month old and provided a well equipped comfy travel cot - tho they had no high chair.
i liked this place and wih them all the best. if the are lucky the winds will wash away the stupid mankind fronts crappy property anyway and then whos laughing hahaha

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 3 days last week and we were blown away with the level of service and the beautiful surroundings that the Dhow Inn offers. Everyone was extremely welcoming and would often remember us and ask us about how our day was, little touches which really made a difference to our stay. We stayed in a standard double room, and there was really nothing 'standard' about it! Before travelling, we read a few reviews on here about how the beach was quite far from the hotel. Once we got there, we thought it was outrageous that anyone could suggest that it was far at all! If anything, it was nice to have a bit of a distance as you felt secure and relaxed at night, and can still hear the sea in the distance. The staff went above and beyond the call of duty on multiple occasions. Overall this exceeded any expectations that I had about Zanzibar!

Room Tip: There were a few rooms by the reception which we thought might not be ideal.. it's better to be...

Dhow Inn is a beautiful hotel at the peaceful East Zanzibarian coast. Decorated with minimalist white furniture and with awesome tropical flowers all over, this is the place to be in Paje. However beautiful it is, what really makes the difference as compared with similar lodges, is the outstanding food. Joan, a renown chef from Barcelona, has managed to find a perfect combination of high cuisine, based on local products, with a chill-out atmosphere amidst stunning views to the Indian ocean. With no doubt, among the best restaurants in Zanzibar. Highly recommended.
