“Dumaguete attraction”

Center for Tropical Studies (CENTROP)
Reviewed 19 September 2012

Having visited Dumaguete many times, I was aware of CENTROP, but had always avoided due to my usual dislike of zoos and captive animals. However having a free afternoon, with not much going on, my wife [a Dumaguete local] and I decided to take a visit here. For the most part , it was quite sad seeing captive animals, however they do have a good breeding programme here, and some of the only visayan warty pigs to be found anywhere in the world. including crocodiles, spotted deer, fruit bats, macaques and several bird species, it did make for an interesting visit.

One can't help but admire the many full-grown trees as this place was started in the 60's by a botanist, Prof. Alfredo Y. Reyes (aptly named after him )- as a tree planting project. It later became a captive breeding center for the Phil. Spotted Deer and has expanded to host other endangered Philippine wildlife such as the dog-faced fruit bat, warty pig, bleeding-heart pigeon, tarictic hornbill, a python, a . crocodile and a long-tailed Macaque.. The tour was like walking in a mini forest and was a learning experience to better appreciate , respect and prevent annihilation of endangered species.
The place is at Ipil St., Daro, Dgte.. Open 8am-5pm M-S. entrance or donation fee is P10
