“Best stay during our 3 week tour in Sri Lanka”
Reviewed 22 August 2014

We really, really loved this place !
Karen is a wonderful host. The rooms are very nicely decorated, comfortable, spacious and very clean. The house itself is beautiful and the setting /location is just stunning. The terrace looking out over the hills is fantastic. Breakfast was without doubt the best we had during our trip and the dinners we enjoyed at the terrace were great.
It's my hobby to find good and fun, affordable accomodation during our trips. This place without a doubt is in my top 3 (looking back at the last 8 years)!

Room Tip: Al rooms are good

We (2 adults + 7 year old daughter) stay 3 nights in August at this lovely place. There are only three rooms and it is very quite. To go to this place you have to go the road (if you want to call it that way) up to the end. But then you feel like if you stay at friends.
During our stay Karen (the owner) wasn't there but this was not an issue. Her staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms are decorated as if somebody is living there. With a book shelf and books, pictures ...not like a hotel room.
The dinner was prepared from Lanka and all the three evenings it was great. A lot of different small dishes (different vegetables, chicken, rice) so that everybody found something for himself. Because there is no menu which you can choose, but if you have some special wishes than tell it to him and he will do it. Like he has done it for our daughter. But the most we liked in the evening was, that all guest were sitting at a big table and the room looks like a living room. After a few seconds you got in touch with the others. We never have found something similar before.
The breakfast was prepared on the terrace were you have a great view on the waterfall, on the train and some monkeys are around there as well. The day could not start better.
All in all we really enjoy to stay at this lovely place. It is quite and you can really relax there.

Room Tip: We have had the studio room and it fits perfect for 3 persons (1 double bed and 1 single bed)

Had two perfect nights with Karen & Martin. So peaceful & relaxed & made to feel part if the family. We love the country but this was a very special stay. Had the lovely Jungle room overlooking the waterfalls - fantastic food both nights & breakfast. Highly recommend a tuk tuk ride away from Ella centre to this fantastic spot which we shared with some great guests. It will be one of our favourites for sure!

We only stayed here one night but wanted to stay longer, this is the most perfect place to stay. There is an exciting trip in a tuk tuk to reach the homestay, a great delight for my daughter. She also fell in love with Skippy and Matilda the 2 dogs there. The rooms we had were spacious and felt like home from home. The food was delicious a traditional Sri Lankan curry with Jackfruit and drumstick beans as well as other yummy dishes. The breakfast had the most amazing homemade jams as well as the usual fruit salads and eggs. Karen is so relaxed and friendly; she really did everything to make you feel at home. You must stay here if you visit Ella.

We loved our time at Waterfalls. Karen has created a fantastic homestay in Ella. The walks in this area are one of my highlights from our trip to Sri Lanka...and waterfalls is a perfect base. If there is availability for your dates, book now! You won't regret it!

Stayed one night - family of four in 2 rooms. Setting is stunning (albeit a bit hair raising to get to along narrow, steep road). We arrived during a power cut so no power or water (obviously not the staff's fault). It was the only place on our tour we were not offered a 'welcome drink' and when the power returned (an hour or so later) we requested a cup of tea (no facilities in the room) and were surprised to find (when settling the bill) that we had been charged for this (along with a pot of tea in our room prior to breakfast).
The lower level rooms are slightly cheaper, smaller and less impressive than the other 2. The jungle room has a beautiful bay window which looks straight into the surrounding jungle and the outhouse (not shown on website) lives up to its name. Plumbing/bathrooms not great and we didn't get any hot water (although others did).
The communal areas are lovely - especially the outdoor table area which has stunning views and the whole terrace area was a great place to relax before dinner. Dinner was Sri Lankan curry with various side dishes and absolutely delicious. Eaten communally with other guests. Service was excellent. Breakfast also good and delightfully served.

Room Tip: Go for Rooms on ground level or above if available - slightly more expensive but worth it.

Room with an amazing view , great food , what flavours ! Service by julie so nice we wanted to stay a lot longer then one night . Only 20 min.from the town by foot. Reservations needed . Try the sri lankan breakfast !! It was very dry when we stayed there so there was no waterfall but i can imagine that during rainy season the view must be mind blowing ...
