“Great airy rooms and awesome curries”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

We got their last room, on the upper floor with a private balcony. No frills but the place was large and very well maintained and clean.

We stayed a few days and did try other restaurants for curries for dinner but theirs was just top-notch. Small quantities but so many different flavors in there. But make sure you order in the afternoon otherwise you'll be stuck with fried rice and such.

The location is good, not too close from the main road, but then in Ella, sound travels and echoes all over, so we had a construction site by the main junction that got noisy at times, and soundproofing in Sri Lanka isn't generally that great.

And it was nice they had a laundry service after sweating out all of my tshirts in the Sri Lankan lowlands' heat earlier that week.

We had a couple of nights here having booked by telephone from NZ. There's some construction going on in the garden (sheltered restaurant seating) but it's not too intrusive. We had room 007 at the end of the upstairs corridor - it's a big room with a double bed, a single bed and a fold-up bed too. There's a great balcony at the front - perfect for a beer at the end of the day (Lkr230 from the bottle shop in town). The shower-room looks a bit dated but at Lkr2500 it's not too bad.

The restaurant does breakfast (poached eggs with a face!) and evening meals (garlic curry Lkr 450, chicken curry Lkr 200 +10% service charge) and beer some days but not others. It also has radio playing incessantly 50s or C&W music - cringeworthy!. Laundry service is reasonable - two t-shirts and a pair of trousers for Lkr 100 (there's no plug in the sink to do-it-yourself!).

It's a short walk into town which is there purely to cater to tourists - there's little charming about Ella - and the background music grates too! Buses to the south coast pass on the road just below the "resort" and go past the waterfall 6km away.

We stayed 4 nights in this very nice place in Ella. The rooms are spacious and clean, the people very friendly. The curry is famous, ordered in advance and was the best curry I had in Sri Lanka. The price of the room is ok and the view from the big terrace beautiful!

We came here based in part on LP review and also on recommendation of friends. I would also recommend Rawana to others having now stayed there.

Location is fine (difficult to have a bad location in tiny Ella). Close to walk up to little adam's peak and shops nearby. Within walking distance from station in maybe 10 minutes as long as your bags aren't too heavy, but as it is up a hill the last 100m or so are tough.

We stayed in a room on the 2nd floor. Room was lovely and big, good sized beds, mosquito nets, good sized bathroom. Also a large balcony, which was great for relaxing and reading.
We did however talk to a family who were next door to us who also had some members staying on the ground floor and they said the ground floor rooms weren't nearly as nice.

We also indulged in the famed dinner at Rawana's. it was reasonably priced and pretty good, but not the best we've had in Sri Lanka, also very much toned down on spice.
We also had the traditional Sri Lankan breakfast which was good.

Staff we encountered were all friendly and willing to answer questions and help out. You get provided with a hand drawn map of the hikes in the area on check-in, which is a nice touch.

Also has wifi, which works about as well as anywhere else we experienced throughout Hill Country, i.e. ok.

I would also recommend going to the Ella Grand Motel just down the hill for a cup of tea. The view down Ella gap is simply stunning.

Travelled July 2013, as a couple, fan room.

Nice guesthouse and excellent food. An absolute feast. Best rice and curry i had in all Sri Lanka. We ate here multiple times. Friendly service as well and they were helpful with travel arrangement advice without angling for a commission

I really enjoyed staying here. The rooms are big and tidy. Bathrooms are nice and clean and the view is good aswell. The only think I didnt like was the slow wifi and the price... But overall I was happy to stay there.

We went here based on the good reviews and were not disappointed. I recommend it highly but would definitely pay a little bit more to get a room upstairs with a balcony which was huge and a great view. Its not quite of Ella's gap but you can see little adams peak and is a great view anyway especially for te price. It was hard to leave the balcony to explore the area. Agree with everything else said here about the food it is fantastic and about the best we have had in Sri Lanka. Thoroughly recommend joining the chef in the kitchen for a demonstration. Very friendly and helpful staff and we had a great stay.
